Myth Bustin the new Noob Toob

I've been playing with the new noobtoob and checking out how it works post 1.2. I discovered a couple things that run counter to what a lot of folks are saying 'round here, so I thought I'd post 'em.

The physics on it's bounce are definatly a little... odd. It seems to act like a soft object. It bounces of walls more like a sock than a hard metal object.

This is what has caused people to believe that GL rounds don't bounce off the ground. They actually do... they just don't bounce very high. Thus, point blank shooting is still possible. There's a very short delay before it goes off, but if you shoot it into the ground at someone's feet, it's not going to bounce very far. Result: Noobtoobing shall continue.

The blast radius has been reduced somewhat, but suprisingly the damage for a direct hit seems to have increased. Before, a direct hit on a buggy would cause it to burn for a moment before blowing. Now a direct hit pops the buggy instantly.

I haven't looked for hard numbers on this, tho, so if anyone has 'em do share!

Oh one last note... GLs are much more effective against lowflying choppers now. Just don't shoot 'em when they're too close. Getting the shell back in the face kinda sucks. :p

As I said before the patch, the noob tubing isn't having anything significantly done to it. If anything, the ability to bounce it off things makes it more dangerous with a little practice. The shooter can still bunny hop around, still make fairly close shots at people, and now with a shorter blast radius, have a better chance of surviving. Then they can bunny hop around while reloading, and even go prone as soon as their loaded for an instant boost in accuracy! Once they fire, hit crouch and start slamming the jump key again until reloaded. Just a chance in procedure is all that's occured here, and now we have many less features, with just a handfull of obstacles for the questionable tactics.

I do think that not being able to fire while in the air is a significant change and a reduction in it's killin capabilities. Not huge, but significant.

Bouncing it off stuff was something I was looking forward too, but so far it's of very limited vaule do the the "softness" of the bounce. Ya can't really bounce it around corners like ya can with a hand grenade.

The bouncing acts very funny indeed, rather upset with the way it operates in that respect. I wish they would have made a function to turn the ability to fire while jumping off. Since it's hardcoded, not only does everything have this annoying animation when you jump, but mods are left out in the cold again if they want it to operate otherwise.

I have noticed that if you walk off the edge of something, like a small roof, you can still fire while in the air, it only disables it when you jump for some odd reason. This is an almost scary effect, since someone might find a way to exploit it and bunny hop their way to victory, shooting the whole way.

Thanks for the report, Wargimp. DICE said they originally intended the grenade launcher as anti-light vehicle option, not the "n00b t00b" wonder. Looks like they pushed it back towards their intended direction and I'm glad for it.

Dang if someone has to do all that to get a kill he can have it. But with me the new bunnies dont bother me any more, because i pretty much fair well against those scrubs. On the other hand i'm very happy the bunny hopping c4ers are gone, those f'ers tick me off big time.

Yes, I was going to mention this too. The GL projectile acts more like a hacky sack than a solid grenade. Firing it onto the ground and there's just an odd delay before it blows, or firing it against a wall and it just plops down belwo the impact point. Most bizarre and illogical.

I wonder what their intentions behind designing it this way were? It's very different from the alpha patch movies that we were exposed to....

Eliminating the hopping while firing a GL is what is the real change....

I don't have a problem with the ability to use teh GL to take out opposing troops. In fact, i would be a little upset if the GL was only good for light vehicle attacks...

So overall, i am happy with the patch and the effects to the GL and jumping combo... That was the true noob toober.. The Assault Kit wasn't raped down to a useless kit like some feared...

yeah i kinda of forgot they were changing the GL when i fired bf2 up with the new patch last night.

It seemed kinda wierd the bouncing thing made it feel like my pc was lagging everytime i fired.

At first glance id say they have ruined the GL expecially reducing the blast radius as it was stupidly and unrealistically small in the first place.

So i dunno if i'll bother palying as assault anymore its not really worth it.

The most irritating thing is that the changelog claims a minimum arming distance of 10m, when it fact it just seems to need to bounce before exploding...meaning you can kill under 10m, and it also means the grenade bounces off light vehicles instead of exploding! Grr!

Actually, its not any different from the alpha video's. *jots down feedback reguardless*

Ah ok Demize99, maybe it's just that we didn't see the projectile being fired against the ground in the alpha videos?

I've heard reports of it bouncing against vehicles as it was presumably intended to do and as it did in the videos. However, having messed around with it in a server last night I found some very strange results -

When I fired it into a wall from a couple of feet away it just plopped down to the ground like a boiled potato.

Not only that, but as a test I fired into the ground right in front of me and instead of bouncing away and exploding as I would have expected it to do, there was a little delay and an explosion wounding myself... in otherwords it got stuck in the ground...

Is this what's supposed to happen?

                          Cheers

Personally I think a slightly longer delay would have been sweet as it appears to me that the noob tube is alive and well and has in fact been made somewhat idiot proof as it is now harder to kill yourself with it (unless you really do fire it at your own feet)...

Another option would be to have it not explode if it hit somthing during the arming period. The bonus of this is that it wold fit closer to the reality of how the weapon works...

But short of that, lengthening the arming time a little more may well encourage people to use at a distance more often...

Its like throwing a wet sock at someone. I can still kill with the thing, just don't look as impressive.
