Re: The Anti-Tank Shortage: When do you play AT?

AT was my most played kit for quite a while. I loved my AT rockets and DAO. Then, I started playing medic more because I could get more points that way. And I didn't like always having to take a shotgun or a crappy smg. I might start playing it more again if the P-90 is any good.

I despise AT, it's not because of the guns (I have used the DAO-12 with great effect)... The reason is simple; no sprint what-so-ever. I understand AT is a heavy class that should not be able to move, but after playing mostly medic (to expert level)- I am so used to being able to sprint for cover that I end up shaking my fist at the screen as the BTR-90 I have just put two SRAWs in lays waste to my once pristine vessel.

Re: The Anti-Tank Shortage: When do you play AT?

Yeah, AT has a lot of weaknesses. I do, though, enjoy the class somewhat.

        1. No teamwork points from any special actions.
        2. The SMGs suck. Can't hit anything except at close range, and do too little damage even on close range. DAO-12 sucks for long range as well, and is an unlock.
        3. No damage assists... this one often ticks me off when playing AT. I put three rockets into a tank and get killed by it, someone else finishes it off, no assist points.
        4. Generally AT rockets aren't the best thing vs. vehicles, and this shouldn't be so. You need at least two rockets to take out a tank, usually three or four. You need two or three to take out an APC. Ridicilously, one rocket doesn't always do it vs. a Humvee/Vodnik, either. C4 and AT mines do the job much better, not to mention airpower being able to deal with vehicles easier.
        5. Forget about sprinting.

Those are the weaknesses, and then it takes some real skill. How do you shoot three rockets at a tank if it's going to be looking for you after your first rocket? If it's open ground, you will be seen lying in the grass and killed. Even with some cover around, you'll often get spotted before you can finish the job. Oh, and in the time it takes you to reload & fire twice more, the tank might be done killing half your team or capping a flag.

Next thing is, taking out infantry with rockets takes skill, too. You have to hit them with the rocket directly, which is very hard if they're moving at all - if your rocket hits at their feet or whizzes right past them, no damage done.

It's a satisfying class if you can use it, though. Taking out a vehicle when you're on foot is always a satisfying kill, every time you manage to kill someone with your inferior SMG is satisfying, and DAO-12 when you have it is pretty awesome to use, too. I do though actually prefer the pistol to the SMG, consider:

All SMGs take 6 shots to kill an unarmored enemy, the pistol takes 5. The US and PLA SMGs can run out of ammo in no time (30 bullet clip), and you're not guaranteed to have killed everyone with the bad spread. The pistol is more accurate, with far less spread, and it's nearly recoilless when zoomed in, and doesn't recoil too badly when not zoomed, either.

So, given the choice between the SMG and the pistol, I'd rather often take the pistol!

Re: The Anti-Tank Shortage: When do you play AT?

Whenever a chopper is base raping or a tank is base raping, I spawn AT afterwards. Always. Especially Karkand is a example of a lack of AT's kits. The MEC easily raped the right arty spawn with ease while everyone spawns back with their noob tubes. And as commander I've seen to many times where nothing has been done about a tank that is sucking out tickets out. I spot the tank, drop arty and order squads to take it out but they just don't.

Re: The Anti-Tank Shortage: When do you play AT?

I hardly ever play it because the run distance is bad, and because except for CQB where you can blast stuff with the DAO, you really NEED something to shoot the missile at to be useful. Granted, a group of ATs will shut any vehicle down, it's not exactly a very versatile kit, especially when it's often better to just grab a tank/APC for anti-armor purposes. At least then you can't get instakilled by the machineguns or auto-cannons.

Well, the problem with the AT class is the SMGs suck, and when in range with the DAO, a lot of times you get noobtubed. I'm guessing after 1.2, the AT class is going to be a lot more common, as long as they really do fix noobtubing.

Re: The Anti-Tank Shortage: When do you play AT?

When I first started playing, I played the spec ops because I was a noob and I thought that going behind lines to destroy enemy arty was L337, and it is. I got a couple of unlocks and had my friend come over when I ranked up. I had an unlock in mind, the PKM. But I asked my friend to give me advice to which unlock I should get. Since he and I are RE4 fans(which has the DAO), he told me to get it. So I got it...played with it for awhile...and praised it to be a gift from god to make me release anger on people who defy me. I praised the AT kit forever. I easily got the Basic AT in the first couple seconds of playing with the brute. A week later, I went on a Wake server and was capturing the Airfield by myself. Encountered enemies...and had no choice to fight. I killed 20 people with my DAO protecting myself. Probably less because I had killed about 5 people before I got to the airfield. Anyways, I captured the airfield, killed about 15 people with my DAO and had my Vet AT badge. From then on, I have come to the decision that being a medic or any other class is fun, but nothing can replace my AT. I am devoted. I have killed Helis, APCs, Tanks, Boats, Vodniks/Hummers, and ripped up so much infantry the I would even fear myself. I stand on a hill proud that my DAO is at my side, Tanks will fear me. I laugh at the infantry that try to out shoot my DAO at close quarters. I am good with a pistol, killing that man standing there with that gun. I just aim at his chest and start clicking as fast as possible while keeping the pistol aiming at him. I have gotten extra kills like that and thats why I have my vet pistol. Don't under estimate the AT, he is capable of taking away everything or preserving it by taking out the thing that is taking it away.

I play AT because it is challenging due to all of the above.
I completely agree! I play standard AT all the time just for the challenge. There's nothing more satisfying than owning someone with a PP19 or worse still, an MP5!

Re: The Anti-Tank Shortage: When do you play AT?

I predict (based on what info is out here and what Ive seen) The AT rocket launcher will be the new noob tube, also support troops will be spamming granades everywhere after the patch.
I only use AT class about 10% of the time these days, since I found out how effective Engineers AT mines are. True the Jackhammer is useless at more than about 30 meters (only good after 15 if enemy is shooting back). I like to use AT however when there are 3 or 4 others in the same area using it against the enemy. Really good way to defend choke points. Blow the bridge to the back bases on Karkand and fire a missle at anything crossing the river. With 3 or 4 AT the enemy armor never knows where its coming from. On that map getting killed only means getting your weapon reloaded, Weird. . . . .Red

lol, I rarely play AT, never unlocked the DAO, will do once 1.2 comes out to try the P90, depending on how good the gun is, i might play a bit more AT. Otherwise its the sniper and spec ops kits for me

Try it out with the Dao and get used to the feel of the SRAW, thats is when you own.

If I'm dead and someone tells me or spots a vehicle taking a flag, I'll spawn as AT.

i reckon the AT class has definately gotta be boosted up. Practically all the weapons suck and then there the missile that does half damage to a tank! MAKE THE MISSILE ONE SHOT KILL I SAY!!

Missle one shot kill= 2 easy. I say 3 shot kill anywhere and 2 shot kill on treads.
