in reality a single stinger will shoot down most things and the pilot would never even know it was there. i was a stinger gunner for 4 years and i loved hiding in the grass and hitting friendly helo's with the IFF and watch them freak. since the stinger and sa-7 are passive IR/UV missiles then they do not set off any warning to the pilot unless it is a head on shot and he sees the small smoke trail. and the fact that the stinger doesnt go straight at the jet will make it even harder for pilot to detect.
Actually, nowadays most planes have the AAR-47 system that will detect the plumes from a launch and automatically dispense countermeasures. Helos don't have much of a chance but jets have a good chance of defeating these missles. :)
ok people. i did a bad thing and am kinda ashamed but still bitter about it.....
i was on a wake map last night and was waiting for the jet to spawn for like 5 minutes ( i know i know-jet whore) and right as it spawns some ass come right up and jumps in it just as i was so i stood in front of it( it gets worse) and so he didnt move. well since i was under it basically i placed c-4 in the bottom of it and moved out of the way so he could take off and waited untill he just got airborne and blew him to pieces. i shouldnt have done it and i hate it when people TK for a vehicle but what i hated was that i was standing there waiting for it and he saw me standing there. i am not saying it was "mine" but if someone is standing there waiting for a vehicle when you get there then find something else. i usually just leave and get a different vehicle or hoof it if someone else is waiting. i feel that people that just come up and push in and take a vehicle that people have been waiting for should be TK'd. so since i did a s**tty thing feel free to bash me for a bit. i just let my annoyance get the best of me.
You did the right thing. I would've knifed the guy if he didn't go away after few warnings.
Personally I feel that a greater disservice was done by wasting 5 minutes waiting for the jet rather than killing the rude person. On most servers you cannot get near a jet because of all the nasty plane whores but once in a while there will be on sitting unused. I say that when you spawn you should look for what you want to do, if it's not there, then move on. Check back each time you spawn if you really want it but try to remember that while the plane will get you points, they cannot capture flags and that's what gives the win.

I totally disagree!
With a properly implemented queueing system for instance:-
You enter a door in the hangar for the SU-34 to find out you are 3rd in the queue for that vehicle! You don't see anyone infront of you, you are just in a virtual waiting room. The airport is coded (eg. surrounded by a high fence) to stop anyone standing on the runway!
This is bad, not the tk part but, waiting for a vehicle? come on!! if its not there and someone is using it go and do something else. You could be helping the team instead of wasting time there trying to get the vehicle from another player that got it first. The only way to get it should be if the player that its using it don't want it after he dies. Waiting for a vehicle its the most noobish thing only if it's for stealing the other team vehicle that will be ok but your own team? :hmm: that's not helping win.

I agree with you Mr Pmosh about teamwork (which in my opinion is the MOST IMPORTANT part of BF2), but there are also two points to consider:-
A) If an individual decides to try and get a badge/medal that requires a particular vehicle, then surely they have the right to do that and ignore teamwork while waiting?
B) Some people think they OWN a particular vehicle, or simply prefer using it because they are experienced (and consequently will be more of an asset to the team)
the one i had was on wake. i only got into the jet because an enemy was coming to get it. As i was going down the run way the last pilot drove a jeep straight at me, they new i couldnt stop as id crash. So i got crashed into by them and i get the tk for it, thats BS. far to say they then got tk by me another time because they had it coming and i got kicked

those plume detection will only work for large SAM's like patriots and sa-9 sized sams. a hand-held stinger fired from 5K's away will not have a plume any bigger than a large ground weapon, and if a plane detects that and starts countermeasures then it would be a constant countermeasure on a battlfield and would never get his/her mission done due to always in countermeasure. a m2 bradley has a bigger flame than a stinger which is one quick ejection charge to get it out of tube before it ignites unlike larger vehicle/ground mounted AA missiles. the stinger is more acurate than people think. we trainined by shooting down other missiles (only 17feet long X 3 foot diam) and if it can get a direct hit on those then a larger plane should be cake. but then again we shouldnt be shooting at our own aircraft anyways to test this theory eh?

You may be right but I do know our newer systems were picking up stuff all the time including small camp fires. I know the Stinger has an initial motor that gets it out of the tube and a safe distance from the operator but it still has a flight motor that can be picked up, I believe. I am not doubting a Stinger by any means and it can be devastaing to slow, low flying aircraft such as helicopters but even they have ALQ infrared jammers that can confuse an IR missle. I think Stingers may have a hard time with fast moving aircraft performing evasive maneuvers and popping off flares especially if it is flying over 10,000 feet...at least our jets with our technology. It may have no problem with older aircraft with less sophisticated sensors and what not. We know what our missles and stuff can do so we know how to counter them. They were even testing ir jamming systems that use ir lasers the last I heard.
should the game have a line system for vehicles = yes.
the line system is like waiting in line so to speak. when you enter the radius of a vehicle spawn, you have priority over others. as soon as you leave the area, get in a vehicle, or die, you lose your place in line. when a vehicle spawns, the first in line has 5 seconds priority over others.
Actually, waiting your turn is common courtesy. Don't say it never happened in DC or BF42/BFV, it was enforced on alot of servers. CB4 and GSN had that enforced, among others that I frequented.
I am not one who gives a sh*t (don't need em to know how well I am doing) about my stats, but when someone snakes me like that, his ass gets tk'ed. I'm kind enough to wait my turn and let someone ahead of me go, I expect the same courtesy to be extended to me. Only time I voided that, is when a clanmember whos respective clan is on their own server is waiting behind me, I let him go first, it's his server in the first place.
It especially is annoying when it is some noob who jumps in a jet and lawndarts it (or gets pwnt) in 30 seconds then comes back and snakes it again, only to do the same thing.
I know alot of you are going to say that it is an *sshole approach, and I agree with you. But, sometimes that is the only language some of these idiots seem to understand.

true high flying A/C wont get touched by a stinger, but the army uses a tactic called Air Defense in-place. for low flying slow moving it uses stingers, for higher flying it uses the patriot. it used to use the Hawk as a medium but the have phased that out and use the patriot when they can or the good 'ol diehard vulcan for total rounds in the air for low also. the avenger system is good but it's based on the stinger also so all it really does is rapid fire stingers and more mobile. combine that with overlapping fields of fire and the jet /helo will have stingers from 2 or more directions to contend with and you have to remember that the stinger is IR/UV so flares and the sun dont bother the new ones like the old stingers and redeyes. if it gets a flash hot source it switches to UV and takes the colder item in the hot flash which is usually the jet flying in front of the sun. the only aircraft we couldnt get a lock on for heat was the F117, but we could get a lock on a match held by a person and the sun reflecting on a water tower . most of our technology is designed to defeat opposing force technology. out own technology cant defeat much of our own equipment(as in defense against attacking) . but i do agree we have some sweet stuff on the A/C. i work on a airforce base so i get to see some good stuff flying around ( F22 is around alot and i wont say where i work)
Yeah, those F22's are pretty sweet but really surprised me how loud they were. I work on a base where F15's and F18's are taking off all the time and they are loud but that F22 just seemed so much louder to me. I know when I spent some time in Atlanta, there were a few times where I'd see some F22's around.
As far as the Stingers and what not, I'll take your word since I am far from an expert on them. All I know about is our helicopters and their aircraft survivability equipment. I do know that we were using some new IR flares that were supposed to be very effective. The easiest thing to do is to just do your best to avoid missles by flying nap of the earth. Hard to lock onto what you can't see.
