BF:MMOFPS - Would you play? More importantly, pay?

    http://planetbattlefield.gamespy.com...es.Detail&id=6

Interesting read to say the least.

In theory, yes, it's possible, but, would you be willing to shell out the $15-20 dollars a month to play? If not, why?

Personally, I would play, although I can see the environment getting a bit repetitive.. you would need more variety, such as a jungle area, or a mountainous area, instead of simply a large country similar ot Iraq.

    Thoughts?

I would, but only if they hired a group of players (oh word?) to consult with the design team.

I refuse to pay a monthly fee for boneheaded, uninformed design decisions.

I dont see that a MMOFPS would be possible. In any MMORPG pings are somewhat in a range of 100-250 ms ... thats enough as people usually dont need to aim but simply execute/spell their attack at a locked target. Atm the best BF2 servers barely handle 64 players on one spot (iron gator) I dont see that changing any soon.

Note: dont go "fooo WoW has gazilloins playas the same time" on me. Having 10000 players on a server/world is not the same thing as having 1000 players fighting at one spot. (recent events proved that )

BF2 wasnt designed or coded as such for players over 64/128.

They would have to redo the entire game and get some better coders if they wanted to actualy make it playable.

And as Drevor said BF2 is more of a close combat game, haveing 1000 players in the same place would be improbable, the servers would be able to handle it fine but the users computer wouldnt.

Most people seem to forget about Planetside, I can see why though. Planetside is a MMOFPS made by Sony. It worked pretty well for a while it had all the massive battles, organized outfits taking bases on different continents 24/7 war in a massive world. However, the only reason why it is failing now is because Sony decides to not advertize or bother to spend money on Planetside because their babies are Everquest 2 and Starwars Galaxies.

Planetside was one of my favorite games of all time, the concept did work for sometime until Sony stopped supporting it. You may here different from those who played in beta or for a month or so. Well, these people probably did not join a well-coordinated large outfit with teamspeak or ventrillo.

Planetside did rock to bad Sony made it...

However, on Febuary 18th supposidly Sony is releasing a free 1 year trial to it for people, you cannot focus all of your certifications in more then the people are paying for but still a good amount.

I might pay. I dont' know. I don't play any MMORPGs, and can't imaging a MMOFPS. But I've always been intrigued by them. My fear is that I'll get so addicted, my wife would divorce me! LOL

this is a very stupid article,
first of all, technical , this is impossible, way impossible, this because the commandlines that have to get send true are much more complicated then with an MMORPG , it's not just like do this now and use stick bla bla bla , it's a constant stream for each person of data , wich grows offcourse with every player joining the server , 1000 people on a server (and stil lthis isn't massive online playing) would cause about 400-700 Mb a sec that hes to be send to each client for an FP shooter , upload wouldn't change for clients .

Imgagine when there would be 10.000 or 100.000 players online .

                        This for starting .

Also, remember when EA/Dice in the beginning of BF2 making claimed there would be support for 124 player servers ?? but they couldn't realize it technicly, so this is far from thousands of players .

A real FPS will never be able , or not be able in the next ten years for getting thousands of people on one server with the same possibilitys as now .

So will this happen ? NO and NO .

Also many people think they will have to pay for the next BF (monthly pay) , this is also NO , reason why you have to pay for those MMorpg is because you play on there servers, wich is not the case with bf , here you play on servers of third party who is rented by third party .

I've never cared much for the massive multiplayer games...usually they suffer in graphics compared to other games and frankly I'm not willing to pay 50 bucks for a video game that I have to pay 10 bucks a month or more to actually play.
