The Swiss/US gun crime comparison (as opposed to comparisons of rates of violent crimes, esp. since what classifies as a viloent crime differs from country to country but what classifies as gun crime DOES NOT) is a good way of highlighting my point.

The guns per head of population ration in Switzerland is similar to but less than that of the USA. In Switzerland the vast majority of adult males have and are militarily trained to use a rifle. In the USA there are as many handguns alone as there are members of the population. Then you can start adding on rifles and illegal weapons on top of that. So yes, the swiss are armed but not quite in the same way as the US demographics indicates it's population is.

The difference is culture. The Swiss are brought up and educated how to handle firearms in a responsible manner. The US simply isn't - not a judgement here, just a statement of fact - and the culture is one of gun glorification (as evidenced by this post). The problem is not what happens when you arm a population, it's what happens when you arm a socially immature population. No offence intended, once again.

As for the "decades of studies" remark, I could point you to a whole host of sites dedicated to the subject but instead leave you to use Google to find whatever sites you need to backup your point of view. Instead, I suggest you ignore Google and go to your local bookshop.
