Re: Fixed my game might fix yours

Ok, I believe Ive truly isolated the problem! I was reading an article on chip over heating and underclocking. Thats right underclocking. So when I got home today I set my CPU to 60% guess what, I got a fairly steady frame rate at about 40FPS. After this revelation I started playing for about 30 min's and jacking the speed up 5% at a time. I am currently up to 75% and all my problems seem to have gone away! I am holding a pretty steady rate (depending on the action intensity) at about 55-60 FPS. It doesnt go below 30 and Ive seen it peak at 89 FPS. I will keep jacking it about 5% every half hour to hour untill my problems return. Then I will check to see if I have made every effert to ensure proper heat transfer to the heat sink (thingy on top of CPU with fins and fan).

In conculision, I will post on this thread any other boosts I get (at least 5 FPS) doing tweaks and what ever else I can find/think of.

If your problems are similar to mine I would try under clocking my CPU to eliminate heat as the problem. Heat was my problem (Intel chips really heat up when they run this game) and I would suggest that you give this a try, If your mother board allows, for two simple reasons. First its not hard (again if your Mo Bo allows), second it doesnt cost anything to try this. On my Mo Bo (Asus P5DG2 Premium) its just a simple setting change in the Bios. I hope this helps some one else, I sure learned a lot during this process. . . . . . .Red

Amazing results redrider. I will try tonight. I think you are making some real progress with these tweaks and I look forward every day to your new tweaks. Interestingly I have noted when it is hotter the lag seems to be much more pronounced. Maybe the solution is for us all to go and get some upgraded heatsinks that cool our processors down.

We can only hope that someone is passing this info onto the game developers so they can come up with some ideas for frustrated BF2 fans.

      Keep up the good work.

Overheating could definitely be my problem too. My Intel 650 can get to 70 degrees while playing BF2, but I honestly don't know at what temperature performance starts decreasing...

Re: Fixed my game might fix yours

You can spend all day trying to figure out if its over heating. The easiest thing to do is to change the clock speed to about 75% then try and play BF2. If it doesnt help, change it back. This should only take about an Hour or two. Mostly sitting playing BF2, you were gonna do that anyway right. You can go into deep detail if you want to but all that really matters is, is the game playable. No one cares if your chip over heats at 110 degrees or 111 degrees. So try underclocking maybe it will help. . . . .Red

That would be a nice fix, but I don't think I can change the clock speed since I have an intel motherboard

Ok, You can look on the net, and see if its possible to change your clock speed. I will in a few minutes.

Further info on my computer. I took the side off and looked around inside my computer. I had read an article at the anandtech website (not misspelled, another web site for geeks into over clocking) and they suggested installing a thermal transfer cream between my heat sink and CPU. So I didnt remember If I had done this or not (I built my own computer). When I started removing my heat sink (never work on your computer without making sure its turned off and unplugged also tuch the power supply first to ensure you have no static electricty build up) I found that it was loose, one of the hold downs, there are 4, had come loose. It had cream on it but I could see it wasnt making good contact. To ensure that I had good contact I wiped the old cream off and reapplied it to both the heat sink and the CPU. I was very careful when I reapplied the heat sink to make sure I had a tight fit and all 4 fasteners were fastened properly. I am currently running around 55 Fps on almost any server and Most of the ones on my favorites list run around 65. I have seen spikes as high as 95 FPS. I am still tweaking my computer, trying to milk every last FPS out of it. I will up date any relevent changes. . . .Red

Re: Fixed my game might fix yours

I spent an hour looking for info on Your motherboard Knight and I could only find on the Intel support site that you can under clock it for trouble shooting purposes. It didnt say how. I would go up there and look. Maybe even ask for Tech support. First I would check my heat sink and make sure it has heat transfer cream (may look white or blue or even gray, should be about as hard as chocolate candy) you dont have to replace it once youve looked if its there. If you dont have it you can pick some up at Radio shack for about 3 bucks. Heatsink-guide.com has an excellant article on it in the heat sink section. Hope this helps. . . .Red

In all honesty, your biggest problem is the Intel processor. AMDs do so much better with games, etc. that I will never go back to Intel.

I would disable the page file if I were you, this will help somewhat. Also your PSU is kinda low to be honest.

Try re-installing drivers, and clearing the cache out to have it reoptimize the shaders.
i think his system should be able to hit 100FPS. i hit 104 on mine at times with 90's on avg. my PSU is a 450 so his 480 should be fine. if i can hit 100's with res at 1280X1024 all high 4x AA on then his system should be able to hit that or close to it. granted i have a x2 4400+ cpu but in this game the gfx card makes a huge diff more than the CPU.

Thanks for the Info, I tried your fixes and I am now able to play the game without the horrid lag. If you come up with anything else, please let us know. I will continue to read this post.

While putting on the therma paste make sure that you keep it ON the processor. If you get this stuff all over the MOBO it could cause problems. If you go out and buy a new Heat Sink for your Processor, it normally comes on it already. But that stuff is terrible. My suggestion, scrape off the paste that comes preset on a heatsink, and spend $1.50 for some in a tube. Don't go hog wild with this stuff, just a thin layer around the processor should do you.

Red Rider, not a crack on you at all honestly. But I was surprised that you didnt look at the heat sink as soon as you thought about it being a overheating problem. Thanks for the idea of cleaning out the *.cfg files.

I would not suggest leaving a pc open unless you have a fan directly on the MOBO. All of the reading I have done, says this creates a dead space of air right over your soundcard, video card and what not. I know you did'nt say you left it off, I was just making a observation.

You got any more news on it? You completly fixed it?
