This is long but worth the read! If you want answers but dont want to read (teenagers bah) skip to last paragraph. I believe this will help 6600 (and other) cards too.
Like a lot of people I have a good system! It seems though that around the time that patch 1.12 came out I started loosing FPS. I had a vanilla 6600 and could run the game on all high settings with 2X AA and my FPS was usually around 40-50 sometimes higher almost never less with a ping around 110. So I started jacking the game settings down to get better FPS, The FPS still kept slowly dropping (seems I was loosing 5 or so per every 3 or 4 hours of game play). I finally decided I wasnt looking in the right place, the game wasnt causing the problem. About the same time the patch came out I up graded my Inter net connection I had a 125 mb up link and went to a 250 mb up link (only number that is important) DSL. I up graded my video driver about the same time went from 77.77 to 81.95. When the DX tweaker became available here I decided to try it. It helped for a little while (gained about 20 FPS) but the slide was still goin on. I finally bottomed out at 15 FPS sometimes 15.1 FPS, not playable, I believe 25 -35 Is for me the playable range and around 50 FPS where I aim for. I went to work on my computer and quit playing the game except to test my work. I first set everything to default, no help. I turned off over clocking, no help. I ran a virus scan and a spyware scan, no help. I tried using cool bits 2, no help. I tried video driver 81.98, no help. I tried reverting back to driver 77.77, no help. I went through the Tweak guides again at Tweakguides.com, no help. I uninstalled and reinstalled the game several times once with a Defrag, once with an install on top of windows XP (where you reinstall windows on top of old version to fix problems), no help. Windows install on top of with defrag (the last 2 with game deleted and then reinstalled), no help. I tried turning off all unnecessary programs with smart close, no help. I used driver cleaner pro, no help. Then I decided to test my sons computer on same server that I was on, we are on same hub same connection. This would eliminate ISP as problem, no help (he was getting about 44 FPS I had 15). I decided at this point to spend some money maybe something was going bad or had gone bad. I went to the most obvious (sp) part the Power supply and upgraded from 380 watts to 480 watts, no help. I added a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS to take work load away from the CPU (was using on board sound), no help. I decided to upgrade my video card (went from a 6600 to a 7800 GT OC), no help. At this point I was stumped. Then after reading posts on several different Forums, Nvidia, EA, Guru3d, several BF2 Forums, I decided the problem was wide spread, what did we all have in common? BF2, new Nvidia drivers, patch 1.12, Windows XP. Windows has very little to do with the video except to run the drivers and BF2 used to work great. So I decided to once again jack all the settings in BF2 down to lowest settings, No Help. All that seemed to be left is the Video driver.
Heres what brought my Fps back to 30, and I not finished trying adjustments. I found some settings in the new drivers that you can only see with cool bits 2. Once these are turned on you have to manually turn them off or they seem to stay on, even when an older driver is installed. These can be found under Performance and Quality settings - (changing other settings might help too) Advanced Tab. What you will have to do is turn these off one at a time and see if they will help your FPS, it helped mine. It seems like the new drivers do something to the cards Bios (ie. a permant change) and you have to go in and manualy turn the settings off. The best part is I couldent tell any difference in quality except my FPS went up. Hope this helps you too. . . . . . Red

. I also agree that I should be getting a higher FPS, I used to. Running at 100 FPS would be nice but Id be happy to see a pretty steady 30 FPS.
