Ethics & what constitutes a good game

Mature discussion only pls. Ideally, rather than a one line answer, compose an actual useful post...

I recently played Fusche Pass as USMC Commander, on a full 32 player server with autobalance on. Frighteningly quickly the team had took ALL CPs on the map, leaving only the uncappable PLA spawn left. My team, based from the nearest CP to their spawn was hanging back, not moving in. As commander I was helping my team - scanning, UAVs, supply drops and artillery where needed. I also hung back in an APC so I was well positioned to catch anyone who slipped through the net.

What frustrated me was the admins on the server telling me NOT to artillery their spawn and to get out of the APC, apparently because I wasn't commanding. I found this pretty annoying... After all, through more effective teamwork and skill we had fought our way to their doorstep and now we were threatened with bans because we were better?

This is not a case of "winning at all costs/at the expense of fun". Although less challenging than a more finely balanced battle, the opportunity for fun was still there - the PLA need to break out, and fast, and we need to contain them. The fact is we did, but using an artifical, "ethical" constraint I found unnecessary.

    a) Artillery on spawn. Granted it doesn't give people spawning much chance to fight back, but that's the point. We need to stop them breaking out, so we use the weapons we have to do so. Is it not more fun having a real challenge, breaking out under fire, than to simply be gifted a chance to get out?

    b) Not allowed to enter spawn. The admins also banned our team from entering the spawn under the "no baserape" excuse. Although I agree with the idea of holding back, I don't agree with the reason. Firstly, entering the base leaves armour MUCH more susceptible to attack from all sides so it is safer to adopt a vantage position from afar and let them come to you in dribs and drabs. But again, giving the opposing team an artificial "chance" takes enjoyment away from both sides. It's not a game then, not a competition. It's a farce. However, note the distinction between "attacking an enemy base" and "spawn camping". Attacking a base gives people a fighting chance. Spawn camping inhibits the enemy from spawning altogether.

    c) Commanders in vehicles. *sigh* I know I will be forever frustrated by people who think that commanders MUST be lying prone in a building somewhere with their face in the map. It's simply not true. Commanders who do this see the pointy end of knives too much for comfort and can't help their team out as much. A commander in a vehicle behind the current battle front is more useful, able to command and react to breakthroughs in a timely and efficient matter.

What do people think about these points? Do you think it is acceptable to want the enemy to fight back properly, drive you off and win or do you think that you should reward THEM with artificial chances because your team is simply better at the game? Should commanders cower in bunkers or help their team out in as many ways as is possible?

    Answers & justifications please :)

A + B : If your talking Uncapable spawn its "poor sportsmanship"

C : Are you commanding, or being a armor driver.... you cant be both at the same time.... either way, you will be a less concentrated Commander if you use armor, and you will be leaving the armor idle and unused when you command.

LAME, IF there is one uncapple flag and your team is absolutly kickin there arse {like yesturday in karkand on the crack clan server} I have fun and make some kills own for a bit then SWITCH sides and help the other team break out. One or two good player will bitch the spawners and then the team often breaks out.

Spwancamping seems to happen when you have a team NOT in squads and who art respawning as medics or anti armour or specs ops. Spec ops start throwing C4, the campers retreat.

      Also throwing flash bangs helps.

If you are badly Spawned. Hit jump and sprint as soon as you spawn and run they will normally then not get you and you can run and fightback.

And for the fun if your a good player swap sides and bitch your ex team mates with a shotgun point blank. Great players swap sides and help the other team break out.

Assholes sit with a noob tube and don't switch side after 5 or 10 mins.

But to be honest admins should not moan. Spawncamping is a result of a naff team nothing else.

Dropping flashbangs also helps blinds everyone and by the time anyone can see about another 10 of your team mates have spawned.

        A) Can't fix this really, people will Arty carrier and such and you'll get revived in the middle of Arty Strikes.

        C) Commander should command. Nough said.

          Good post.

          In reply to points A&B:
I personally feel that if a team (mine or the other side) gets pushed back to a single uncappable flag, the 'winning' side should not pile into this flag or arty it - as this is not fun for those on the receiving end and the team with all the flags are simply turkey shooting.

Granted, there is always a flip-side to every point raised about grievances in BF2; you could argue that the winning team now has the right to pummel the losing side, but from a ‘fun’ POV, I would personally allow them the chance to break out and cap some flags – keeps the game going :)

For an admin to start giving out threats of bans, just because they have been pushed back, and where such rules at not listed prior to starting a game, I feel is totally wrong.

          In reply to point C:
If a commander is working both the duty of commanding and still playing well in a vehicle – why not?

What is not really acceptable imo, is for a commander to sit in a vehicle, somewhere on the map, and simply command – this is denying the rest of the team of a useful bit of kit and makes the commander about as popular as a bunny hopper.

          Scort.

I think its important to maintain an even balance between sportsmanship and fun. I don't spawn camp and the only times i ever go near uncappable flags are if all other flags have been captured and even then only on foot.

An extended debate about this is somewhat pointless. Bottom line, it wasn't your server and therefore you have to play by someone elses rules.

If you don't like it or wish to play by a different set of rules, find another server or rent your own.

When I am commander I am constantly scanning and paying attention to the whole map. ANyone tries to sneak up on me I almost exclusively get the drop on THEM because I almost ALWAYS know where they are.

Nothing better than seeing a spec ops guy coming around the corner with his knife out only to see me with my jackhammer pointed at his face. *BOOM* dead.

I ahven't been knifed as commander in such a long time.

But even if that did happen. . .so what? that 15 seconds I am dead is WAY less wasted time than you driving around in an APC. Commanders should command. Period.

It is uncappable spawn. Why is that not sporting? I'm not proposing you stand behind/on known spawn points killing as they reappear. I'm simply saying that it's taking the fight to the enemy, attacking them as you would anywhere else. Also, the whole "spawn camping sucks" brigade tend to think that spec ops attacking assets is bad too. It's been discussed before elsewhere, but I think the problem is people try to apply a code of ethics to the game rather than simply play it how it is and how it was intended. When it's NOT played as it was intended, such as Blackhawks pre 1.03, then the problem is fixed. But until DICE add invisible walls around uncappable spawns then we know that there is a reason you can attack uncap spawns and that reason is to continue the game and give both teams a chance to fight.

C : Are you commanding, or being a armor driver.... you cant be both at the same time.... either way, you will be a less concentrated Commander if you use armor, and you will be leaving the armor idle and unused when you command.
I'm using a vehicle to stay mobile. YOU CAN BE BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. I would point to my stats to reinforce this http://bf2s.com/player/47177657/. I command in vehicles, supporting my team when they need it and when assets are available. When they are recharging or I spot a breakthrough I move over to cover it. Something I cannot do in a bunker. There is NO REASON why I cannot command from a vehicle, indeed I am better protected and better able to do my job in an APC than in a house. Note I don't need to be driving the APC, but if I have my own (of which there are usually a surplus) I can react to things myself.

Commanding means using the UAV, scanning/spotting and artillery to most people. What it means to me is UAV, spotting, artillery and acting as a mobile reserve, immune to being knifed in the back. Which is better, honestly? :)

Switching teams to the losing side
Sorry, but as "noble" as this is, we're playing a fun game to win it and if my team & I have worked hard to get to a dominant position I think we are entitled to fight to stay dominant and win the round. Autobalance is there to keep the teams numerically balanced so teams don't win due to sheer numbers so I don't expect anyone to switch teams to give the other side more of a chance. After the round is over if you want more of a challenge, join their side. But I think expecting people on the winning team to change sides is taking away their right to win rounds they have fought well to do so.

                    You are missing the point.

I agree that if the server rules are clearly stated and say "no spawn camping", "no grenade launchers" or ffs even "no using any vehicles" then if I use that server I do so under those rules. I have no right to complain.

But if someone on the server is having a bad day then it doesn't seem fair to do it on the spot, especially not if they then abuse the "rule" they have created on the fly themselves later on.

But the argument isn't about server rules. It's about why people have some built in hatred of enemy people in uncappable spawns.

Consider this. If the "rule" is we are not allowed to attack uncappable spawns (on Fusche pass for the sake of argument) then where does that end? At what point are people "sporting enough"? The PLA are stuck in their spawn but we are not allowed to attack them there. So, do we have to let them drive up to the first flag, watch them take it THEN obliterate them using every vehicle on the map? That is, obviously, silly. But where do you draw the line? "No attacking uncap spawns and you must stay 300m away from it at all times?" You can't enforce things like that, it turns the game into a farce.

The solution is to realise that sometimes you will be under huge pressure, down to one spawn, and you need to simply accept it and try to fight back. Anything else makes a mockery of the game.

Heh we've had this discussion before mate, and I see we are still agreeing to disagree.

I still don't think it's true to say you can be fully zoomed in supporting and spotting for your team whilst simultaneously knowing exactly where people are around you - that's looking at two seperate parts of the map at the same time. True, the scanner shows everyone but by the time you've spotted for people the blips near you have faded. Better then to be in a vehicle than not

You're exaggerating a bit when you say that you being dead for 15 secs is less time wasted than me being dead (although I also remember your argument from a while back that it was better to be alive than dead at all times ). I'm not simply sitting around stationary in an APC all time - when I'm not commanding I'm blowing people up.

I can see the whole commanding argument will never die. I know it works - I do it and I've seen other great commanders do it - but appreciate others think the opposite.

Back to the ethics about not attacking the last spawn point then. The argument is that attack an uncap is somehow unsporting. Please tell me how it is different in any way to attacking the last enemy cappable CP.

Re: Ethics & what constitutes a good game

Commanders should'nt be in vehicles, especially armour. You say that you do it so that you can get anyone that gets through, if the APC/Tank was being used as it should be there would be a lot less chance of anyone getting through.
Then you say it saves you from being knifed ?
If anyone is comming to you, chances are they're Spec Ops and will just C4 you.

Last night on Sharqi, we had a Commander sitting in a much needed Tank the entire round. We lost by less than 20 points after being pushed back to the TV station, and then being killed as we spawned by a transport truck not 15 yards away from the Commander's Tank, and in plain sight. Just 1 shot from the Tank and we could have won. But then, if the Tank had been in action from the start, we would'nt have even been pushed back at all.

If I'd known about the Commander wasting the Tank from the start I would have happily taken the -2 hit and blow him the **** up !

Commanders should be the biggest team players there are.

You cannot say that your performance in commanding while using an armor is as good as only looking at the map. There's always something to do on the commander screen.

I guess you just use your four toys and drive a tank while waiting them to recharge.

If your team alredy is winning why do you have the need to go into their uncappable base and shoot them as they spawn? Is it fun to be on the recieving end of baserape? Is it fun to baserape?

My anwser to the last two question is no. The point for most people in a public game is to have fun. For some that means to get points by whatever means necessary. It is a deficiency in the game that makes baseraping possible thus the "need" for rules. Most servers don't have baseraping rules so I don't see an issue. If you want to baserape because you enjoy it then join a server that allows it. Don't complain on a general BF2-forum about what some server owners decide on. If you like that particular server and want them to change the rules their forum is a better place to have this discussion.

I for one will not chime in with you and tell you how lame the admin is for prohibiting your team from baseraping. If you don't like the rules or the admin just play on another server don't create a thread about it.

If the other team gets pushed back and still can't get it together to fight as a TEAM they deserved to be crushed. Just ignore the complaints and get it over quickly.
