I'd just like to say I too don't think I'm getting as good fps as I should... maybe I am, don't know.
Specs:
Intel p4 650 @ 3.4 ghz
Intel 945pvs motherboard
2 sticks of Wintec 512 mb
eVGA 7800 gt
2 80 gb 7200 rpm hard drives in RAID 0
Antec Truepower 480w

I get between 30 and 50 fps on Karkand with a ping between 30 and 60. My settings are on max at 1280x1024, except with no anti-aliasing. Am I asking too much for more fps?

Bf2 and the way it works is tottaly random, although this has already been stated, I have some weird proof. I overclocked my Video card and my processer (vid card first), and my performance did not change, it actually sort of decreased. This happened to me on another computer, but I overclocked it fine, its just the way bf2 works, seeing as how I got a performance boost in games like FEAR, just not bf2.

well look at my specs....al on medium dynamics on low 2x AA....Im hoping 1 more GB of RAM will help.

one gig will help some more, somewhat. You should be playing on high with a 6800gt, even with your 3ghz pentium 4. especially sicne the card is OCed. Maybe its running too hot, the GT is known for high temps at stock settings.

I should be getting much better performance for my GPU, in action it drops below 40FPS.

Is that true?

I run Quake 4, full settings, at around 40-50FPS and at just below 40FPS in action. The graphics on Quake 4 are many times better than BF2 and yet it has good performance. But on BF2, the performance isn't that good... Seems something to do with BF2 doesn't it?

The game wasn't configured for all cards and even so, it was basic, thats why theres only a portion of cards that can play this game.

As with everyone else, here's my 2c.

I've hosted 4 LANs for BF2 up till now (another coming up soon) and I have managed to get the game working satisfactorily on every machine I've tried. The most recent meet was using 1.12. I don't have any probs with claims that the BF2 engine is inefficient or that the patching process is crappy (I've seen it take over 40 minutes to install on one machine) but the problems the OP is reporting are completely overboard - it's not the game, not to that extent.

One machine I worked on was installed with a 6600GT 256 AGP and it's performance was absolute crap. The guy wouldn't even try to play the game. Blew the OS away, fresh build with latest forceware drivers and away it went.

Now I'm sure an argument can be made that the game shouldn't be so sensitive to such things, but the fact remains that the OS/Driver install clearly had a major impact on game performance. My 7800GT arrives this week (upgrade from 6600GT) and I will have no qualms whatsoever in blowing the machine away and starting again from scratch if the performance isn't up to expectations.

I'm guessing OS debris + iffy driver install = OP problems

i did make a thread regrading high end cards i.e 7800gt/gtx
but i was having the urine takien out of me.
i built alot of custom rig's for ppl and quit a few bring in there p4.3.0/3.4
and amd/64 alot of complaints about poor performance ect.
i am on a mission(look at sig) to make sure ppl are aware that a card like that needs power prom ur psu.

i noticed a few ppl mention it but it seem to pass them by.

on youre 7800gt box look for mimimum psu requirments ,and remember that minimum is for a pc with 1xhd and 1xdvd/cd

so if u got fans and more drives ect and a psu under 400watts you may want to consider a higher watt psu (recomends one with 30Amprage)
to get the best out of your'e card.

NOTE: SOME LOWER WATTAGE PSU MAY BE OK DUE TO THERE HIGH APMERAGE BUT THERE IS A LOT OUT THERE THAT DONT SO GOOGLE UR PSU IF POSSIBLE TO FIND THE SPEC'S

I got the same problem. 7800GT with AMD64 3000+ @ 2.4ghz and I get 20-50FPS on high with no AA.
