    Upgrade got worse...

okay before i was running bf2 on a amd athlon xp 1.8 ghz and an ATI Radeon 9200. It ran fine, but i was disappointed when i put the graphics to the max that the card would allow (mostly medium because the card doesnt support high graphics).

today i bought an brand new AMD Athlon 64 3500+ and a brand new ecs motherboard. I put in the same graphics card and went to run the game. when i reached the login point "after welcome to duty" the game freezes but the music still plays until it completely shuts down. Now i have uninstalled and reinstalled the game about 5 times now and it still wont work. i am up to date with all drivers. why would the game run before and not now after i spend lots of money? any help or suggestions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED because i am willing to do anything.

You need a new graphics card. A 9200 just won't cut it these days. In fact, your graphics card is even more important than your processor. Upgrade to an Nvidia 6600 or ATI x800 and you'll see a huge increase in performance. Upgrade higher to an Nvidia 7800gt or gtx, or ATI X850 or X1800 and you'll be blown out of your computer room. Your AMD 3500 will last you 3-4 more years as long as you have a good graphics card.

Might be the on board sound on the ECS mobo if your using it , if you are get an Audigy 2zs or something.

First, keep in mind that new system of yours is cutting edge. Lots of things will need some tweaking to make them just right. "EA sucks" is not the answer. I would try disabling BF2 sound and see if it at least loads. Next I would load the latest ATI driver. If you already have the latest then drop back a version or two just to see if it makes a difference.

Now whether you fix it or not the next thing you've GOT to do is throw that crap video card away and get a *new* one! If you are really willing to do anything then go get one of the brand new ATI cards that just came out. I don't mean the X800 or X850, I mean the newer ones. The model #'s escape me right now. I have an X850 only because I cannot use a PCI Express model yet (need a system bd upgrade) and the difference between my old Radeon 9800 and the X850 = jaw dropping. It is possible that the Athlon 64 config has compatibility issues with a video card that old. Is the card PCI? Does the Athlon 64 even have AGP slots? Go get a PCI Express card! The difference will blow your mind. If you don't do it I can see your next post now...
"I got everything working on Med to Low graphics settings but it is so choppy I cannot play! What was EA thinking!..."

what would the sound have to do with the video. if anything the sound is better than the video that the card is giving out. as of now here's the sequence. the game loads up fine and everything it goes through the ea and dice ads and then the intro. the intro runs fine and the sound runs fine and then it says welcome to duty. right on cue with the menu music the static television screen in the background freezes and the cursor appears. then after 2 minutes it minimizes and tells me my vpu or whatever has a problem.

yeah and this mobo i just got had pci express so i have room for your upgrade that you suggest, and i am afraid (well not really ) that that is what ill have to do. in the mean time ill just play call of duty 2 which runs ironically PERFECTLY until i make the money. im aiming at a geforce 6800 256 mb card. and my card right now is agp and it is in an agp-express slot

BF2 should be fine. Just turn shadows and dynamic shadows OFF. lighting and dynamic lighting to LOWand most everything else on MEDIUM. Oh...anti-aliasing turned OFF too. Then you can play with the old card.

They have nothing to do with each othe but your crash could be from either source. My $ is on the sound. The first few game screens don't count. Those are generic (like 'safe' mode) displays. After all that the game goes to My Docs\BF2\Profiles\0001\*.con files for the config. and loads your preferred video and audio settings.

Just try what I said. (I think ATI will buy back old cards and give you $50 towards new one - won't they???)

I think 5.12 or 13 is the latest actually. And in that latest driver they specifially fixed a few BF2 issues.
