With respect to the original post, I get the same performance hit when piloting any heli in SF. It has nothing to do with lag, or video settings, there is a bug, there must be, otherwise, we would be encountering the same thing in vanilla, and on ground vehicles as well.
I've already changed my PCI Latency..but I find it annoying that I have to sacrifice graphics settings or audio quality just to workaround an annoying bug.
It IS a workaround..not a fix..but I appreciate the post nonetheless. At least I know that if I get desperate, I can play with my graphics settings. If it didn't take 10 minutes to optimize shaders each time I made a change, I wouldn't mind playing around with it more
And there is NO way I'm decreasing my sound acceleration after just shelling out for a new X-Fi card... man oh man, I hope they pull their thumbs out soon.
You know what, go shove your X-Fi up ...! ...Khmm.. Erm... I wanted to say, do your research. This is what I found:
"If the latency timer is set too low, PCI devices will interrupt their transfers unnecessarily often, hurting performance. If it's set too high, devices that require frequent bus access may overflow their buffers, losing data."
So ADJUSTING the PCI latency does not neccessarily hinder your perfomance, but is likely improving it. I'm actually gonna try to go back to full acceleration on my crappy Turtle Beach sound card and see if that fixed the sound stuttering under full accell.
I have a clean install of XP, all updates, no non-essential services running, and latest drivers for everything. I experience no problems with BF2 nor any other game for that matter. However, I do experience the problem you describe, and also rather random CTD's (only on special forces).
The reason it is a bug and not a performance issue, is that the frame rate will be smooth, but suddenly jerk for a split second, then be smooth again. SO your avg FPS will still be ok. As was stated, also only happens when piloting, meaning I can be looking at the exact same thing, while gunning, and experience perfect frame rate.
The problem is actually similar to one you get with textures set to high, like your video card can compute the on screen image fine, but there is a bandwidth issue where it needs something from memory that it can't access fast enough.
So basically, yes Talus, your not alone, it's a real issue.
BF2 has a number of bugs, some small, some not so small that negatively impact the game for me.
Other 'bugs' that annoy me:
1. Commander screen placing of Uav's, arty, etc becomes bugged to where the asset does not fall where you click the mouse.
2. I've actually seen the text at the top of the screen that says "Other player [killed] ME"
While I'm walking around, alive, and not getting shot at. Whaa?
I'm already adjusting my PCI Latencies. I have been enjoying the performance enhancement that doing so brings.
I do, however, refuse to lower my in-game graphics and audio settings due to a bug.
Oh I see your point now. But try it for the sake of experiment and the rest of us and see what fixes the issue. Did you update PB? Again, I'm not 100% sure that there even is a new version, but I remember that I got rid of stutters on some servers by updating PB. I'm assuming that PB is involved in checking the packets that are being sent to the server.
I havnt seen any posts on this issue for a while but I will throw my 2 cents in. I have recently been noticing that there is a "Stuttering" thing going on when i pilot a Hind chopper on the surge map. I read on a post that it also happens on the mass destruction map so I logged into that one and also had the same stuttering. I notice that is goes from 70fps to 30fps every few seconds. I have tried just about everything to fix it. I put ALL my setting to the lowest levels and played in 800x600, Tried different video drivers, tested on 2 different modem/router combo's and even tried a different computer. It seems the only way to fix it is to get out of the choppers pilot seat, even if its just moving to the gunners seat. The Ping, amount of players on the server and server load have NO effect on the problem. I get the stutter on servers where I am by myself with 40ping. The thing that gets me is that when i started a LAN game on my computer and joined in, it ran smooth as silk,so it must have something to do with the internet and not the computers specs. I have also noticed that there is a SMALL chance that you will not get the stutter on the first server you log into after you reboot your computer. If you log out and then log back in, you will then get the stutter back. I hope this is something that enough people are having a problem with so that DICE will address it in a patch because I dont think there is a thing we can do about it.
FYI: I am running a AMD Athlon 3800+ 64 x2 / 2 gigs of pc3200ram / X800XL 256mb PCIE card / DSL connection
I get lag in the pilot seat as well, but only on certain maps in SF. Int the Maps I do get lag in the pilot seat, it goes away in gunner seat and other vehicles.
Its useally fine for me, but occasionally I get a spike and it causes me to crash.

I update PB before every BF2 session.
I even changed 'pb_sleep' to 500 because I don't want any PB-related lag. I've been optimizing BF games since 1942 (not literally, of course)
PunkBuster has nothing to do with it, even though it kind of makes sense. I started a dedicated "Surge" server and deactivated PB. I logged in, jumped in the Hind and got the same stutter as when I played on PB activated servers
