Re: Gamespy gives BF2 SF a...

As I've said in elongated posts in the vanilla BF2 forum here, there are many aspects of this game that are inexcusably bad. There are no warranties for us software-purchasers. Yes, we're allowed to whinge because we didn't get this stuff for free, we bought it.

The gameplay IS good. Ok, there are conflicting views on certain aspects such as arty/AA (vBF2), the effectiveness of night maps, etc, etc, the list goes on. My beef is not with the game content.

My beef has always been, and always will be, with crappy coding. As others have quite rightly pointed out, there must have been pressure by EA on DICE to get BF2 out in time, and SF in time for christmas. Well they did, sort of. Or did they?

In short, (and yes I still play BF2:SF), damn good game marred by ****-poor implementation.

Good points Vasquez! EA's ultimatum to DICE was probably: "Get SF released before Christmas or there will be no Christmas for you guys!"

Is that Will Farrell on your sig?

Why yes it is. The DICE developers just need MORE COWBELL in their team.

Maybe that's what it is...EA stole their cowbells and that's what's wrong with them! More cowbell...geez how much do I hear that, being in the percussion section of the college band. :p

Jofaba, if your post was in response to mine, then don't take offense, I am not saying people that don't know how to optimize their systems, or troubleshoot are stupid, Einstein or Newton would be lost in the sauce if you put a computer in front of them. But you have to consider that there are how many copies in circulation? And how many servers online that are constantly full? So obviously, there is an issue with operator maintainance if So many people seem to be able to play just fine (at least run the game, with bugs aside), and only a relative handful are having such issues that they can not even play. OR, the game does have problems with certain combinations of hardware that haven't been fully explored. I know from using Linux that certain distros just don't play nice with certain hardware and this carries to pretty much anytime you use supported/unsupported/proprietary/opensource/hardware/software (or we'll just say...computers). Hell, one of my clan mates was having CTD, and a couple other issues, switched his mouse, and it hasn't CTD'ed again, weird huh? No doubt it's a finiky game, but it isn't THAT bad.

Having a super gaming system isn't going to make anyone automatically exempt from issues either. Mine isn't a super system, but it ain't no E-Machine either, I just know my way around it.

I'm sorry, but when an organization such as this says they can't get a game to work on a computer, it's safe to assume they know danged well what they're doing since...it's their job to work with computers? To play games? They've had plenty of experience with computers collectively, and they even went through the trouble to try multiple systems. The game had a 33% failure rate on the computers they tried...I don't see what's so hard to comprehend.
Well, I seriously doubt 33% of the computers that installed BF2 outside of theirs failed to do so.

Fords job is to make cars, but have you seen the amount of recalls they have? They've been making making cars a LOT longer than whoever has been playing video games, and still make mistakes. Like I said in my other post, just look at the number of servers, and full ones at that, I don't understand what's so hard to comprehend about that the game runs fine (at least installs and runs) on way more than not.

It's a lot better than them trying 1 copy, it not working, and simply saying the thing didn't work. And yeah, Ford makes mistakes, but I doubt they rush a car and leave out parts to the transmission and a couple pistons to the thing.

Servers are full, yes. But what about the sporadic kicks that occur (that seem to be a lot more frequent, as with the nametag bug, since the 1.12 patch that gave the game SF functionality)? Looking at all the servers is that INSTANT in time, not a collective view of what's going on. Despite the mass kicks when sometimes half a 64 player server or more gets a CTD at the same time, people return to them, giving the illusion they are full of happy, problem free people. Going through the server browser itself should be the first indicator that something is wrong with the game. If I can type in the word "strike" and "shraqi peninsula" is brought up in the map name list, SOMETHING is wrong is simple string comparison isn't fluid (a function that's part of the C++ standard library).

I'll agree that 33% may not be correct however, but as far as people having trouble being a direct relationship to their knowledge of computers is a silly assumption.

LOL I love when people say "It worked fine on my computer...must be user error for yours" Lets do the steps...Put Cd/DVD in...hit install...done...not much room to F*ck up...

And the second point if it works for you doesn't mean it will or should work for all. Maybe you are computer savy and know more then the average computer user does...But if EA wants to make money they can't just Deal to the Computer Savy only people...they need to make a game simple enought to work on MOST of the computer and for MOST people that don't know very much about computers...and 1/3 fail rates on the patch i can belive...

Cars have warranties when something goes wrong, software does not.

Also, you could potentially exonerate "Ford" on defects, but couple that with a tire-manufacturer defect and I think you'll find the number of defects rising somewhat.

6.5million recalls is pretty bad :)

Re: Gamespy gives BF2 SF a...

This is rhetorical because it can't be done, but I'm pretty sure if you took a poll of everyone in those servers on what they're running for specs, a vast majority will be playing on Dell's and such, running low or medium. If they ran the console FPS program, they'd probably be hitting 40-50fps. As far as they're concerned, it still looks great compared to other cheaper and older PC games, and they couldn't care less.

Out of those people, the percentage of Special Forces owners is going to be a helluva lot smaller. Since turning their investment in the game up to around $80, I'm guessing that those are the people with the better retail computers that can run low/medium upwards of 90+fps. Special forces on those same settings probably runs on their computers near 30-40fps. Very playable.

As far as they'd know, THERE WOULD BE NO PROBLEMS. The general gaming public will go to set everything on high and when the game turns to mud, they'd turn it back to what was working and not think twice about the graphics loss.

We're not those people. Look around this community. These people spend hours in a forum community about ONE GAME. More than likely, they, and myself, are trying to get the most out of it. That means all high, 1600x1200 (or at LEAST 1280x1024 4:3 of course), all settings in ATI or nVidia software on high, running 100% stutter free above 35fps.

And considering that a vast majority of us upgrade for specific titles, and are typically willing to spend whatever it takes to be able to reach the previously mentioned level, is it too much to ask that such a level is obtainable?

People with sli setups, 3500+ AMD 64 processors, and people who know exactly what they're doing are still having issues. And, some aren't.

I'm not picking on you, it's just getting tiresome to keep explaining this as if we're defending ourselves and our computers. At a certain point, after all the hardwares been replaced, everythings been uninstalled and reinstalled, Windows has been reformated, and the only thing left is the game... it's finally time to say "maybe something's wrong HERE".
                        --------------------------------
edit: Sorry to repeat some of what I said earlier. I forgot that this was the same thread. And I'm not typing this angry or anything. I play BF2 fine and I've hit a sweet spot with Special Forces before, and am pretty sure that once I've got my Raptor drive replacement, I'll get there again. But I am trying to help other people out with their lag issues (if possible).

Electronic Arts continues to shy away from the asymmetry that gave Battlefield: Vietnam so much of its flavor, albeit balance problems

YES, GOD, YES!!!!! I loved the diversity in BFV kits, two for each class, and then totally different weapons and vehicles for each side. Why didn't BF2 borrow this aspect?

The server browser is as ungainly as ever, and trying to apply filters is liable to knock every server out of your list until you restart the game.

Dead on truth, I can't get over how iffy the server browser is.

I think a lot of these people complaining need to look to their own abilities to operate a computer before blaming the game. Not even half the users here cry about the game not installing and crashing, and this is only a very small percentage of the BF2 community.
You're absolutely dead wrong on this. There are a lot of people having trouble with this game and it's not their fault. True PC gamers really have to know their way around a PC, and we should have to monkey around with our machines this much to get a game to work. You can run the game great and that's great for you. But you got lucky. This game is broken. I've been building PC's for a long long time and I know what makes them tick. This game does not run well, and I would have rather waited until 06 to get the expansion than pay $30 for a buggy beta.

Think we should just drop the "machine" issue. In the end you'll realize that you guys actually agreed with each other in the first place, but went on to argue about different things. =)

Fact is, this expansion is a liability to the Battlefield series.

BF2: Vanilla ? 9.5/10 (simply because I dun give perfect scores)
BF2: SF ? 5/10 (simply because I feel bad for DICE)

Now if only those dang servers would revert back to old Vanilla... I got some bombing to do.
