Since there are all these threads about squads bouncing around I thought I'd add my two cents.
Squads are unrealistic in BF2 (by implementation), and unfun.
I don't play games to be told what to do. I could care less if my team wins, nobody else does, and there's no reward for it unless you're the commander. I join a squad simply to add the time to my stats because it's required for certain awards. Most squads do not play together, especially on servers that don't have VoIP. Most squads do not play better than lone wolves, and as a lone wolf I have taken out entire squads with just a couple of hand grenades (and I'm a mediocre player at best). Whatever advantages a squad might have, the biggest is eliminated by taking out the squad leader - some squads will recycle leaders but that's rare and I'm not sure how helpful.
It has recently come to my attention that I play terribly as a member of a squad. I sometimes end up with a decent score because of support points, but my death to kill ratio usually tanks. I also have a lot less fun playing as a functioning squad. It's true the kits complement each other, especially in SF, but for me it doesn't offset the fun playing as a squad takes out of BF2.
Sometimes BF2 seems to be a game that was programed with an unrealistic idea of the gamer community. It seems to be geared to some kind of nonexistent elite professional gaming community, where 32 people who know each other form a tight group of players as a clan and then form squads and work together to take and defend CP's against another group of 32 players. I doubt that 99% of players fit into such a community and so it seems that Dice and EA created a game for maybe 1% of the people who actually ended up buying it (pure speculation on my part).
The ticket style/capture cp game play doesn't really promote team play as well as objective style FPS's team work like Enemy Territory - maps like Fuel Dump, Oasis, etc - and despite the fact you can't form BF2 like squads* and have no built in VoIP and stats are not recorded in a permanent record you'll find almost everyone working together to accomplish the game missions, a complete opposite picture of what is going on in BF2.
Anyhow, just my two cents - Squads are unrealistic, and unfun.
This was originally a reply in a thread (for about a minute) but I thought it deserved its own thread. It was also a bit off topic.
*You can form a squad but all that happens is that you see a list of members and their health and location (by an unhelpful grid coordinate)
