I actually feel sorry for the thread starter because you obviously haven't experienced BF2 "the way its meant to be played!" Squads is what makes BF2 different from any other shooter. Squads make teamwork possible and extremely enjoyable when it just works.

My Mrs often plays the squad leader and she is very good at it. Why? I think women can be more patient then men and thats what makes a good squad leader. Some of the best, most enjoyable games I have had working as a team is when she is SL and hangs back as a mobile spawn point.

1 game comes to mind in particular. We had a full squad, the Mrs was SL and our commander wanted us to take the TV tower on Sharqi. We were MEC the Mrs found a good hiding spot near the TV tower. There was heavy resistance, the USMC were camped all over the place and weren't going to give up the TV tower. She would inform us on enemy movements. It took us 6 attempts of dieing respawning but we took it and held it for the rest of the round. Our squad were all in the top 5 places all except for the Mrs who came last with a score of 2. It takes a sacrifice like this by a good SL for this type of teamwork to happen. If you were only worried about points then you will never experience this type of teamwork and enjoyment you get from it.

Its all down to the squad leader. sometimes you get a bad one in which case you don't stay in it. others you get a really good one.

in my eyes - example of a good working squad.

-All on VoIP
-Leader stays back a little and stays alife for spawning.
-Leader explains stratagy's and tells you where to go and what to do.
-Members listen to their leader.
=Team Wins

Add this to your list:
- Leader is using VOIP Communication with Commander
- Commander is giving Artillery / Supply / UAV priority to Squad Leader because his squad is working together and completing objectives / defending & capping flags.

Dude its obvious by your posts that you don't really give a crap about your squad. You don't have the confidence to follow someone elses orders without your ego getting in the way. This coupled with the fact that you admit you aren't a good squad leader and hearing your lack of care for team success and goals just reinforces this.

So you're playing a team based military FPS, and you won't take orders and you suck at giving them.... why the hell are you playing this game????

Q4 is made for you!

The sad thing is, IMHO that the best thing about gaming, is how through teamplay, 6 soldiers in a squad can be a much stonger force than 6 individuals. That is BF2 in a nutshell and I just don't think you get it, or maybe you don't care...

It's not that hard. Just keep changing squads until you find one that is working well (non-retarded SL). Then all you have to do is ALWAYS SPAWN ON THE SL! Stick with him and do your best to make sure he stays alive. Support his actions to the very best of your abilities.
It takes practic to be a good member of a functional squad, but the pay off is huge.

Seriously, it's the teamwork that makes BF2 a totally different game.

And if you don't find that appealing... well, yeah, there are better games for your personal tastes out there.

Every time I join a squad it's usually a couple of guys who run around completely oblivious to each other and the fact that there in a squad together.
I join a squad because I believe in teamwork, and want to play in a team as a team.
But it's usually pointless.......

My squad tonight was so fantastic, I managed to get my first purple heart. Funny thing is I still got 1st place in the server...

YOU can make a big difference in terms of teamwork.
If you always spawn on the SL, follow him, and support his actions, you're half way there. If you can convince the rest of the squad to do the same, you've got it.

I tend to find that I have more success in getting good teamwork going when I'm playing as a squadie rather than an SL because I can demonstrate how to propperly support your SL.

Go out 'n give it a shot. More than likely you'll end up following more than a few clueless SLs, but let's just call that a "challange".

A person without confidence, one who is insecure with themselves, needs to prove themselves constantly, and have great difficulty allowing someone else to lead. Natural leaders know when to act and when to listen, you apparently don't like to listen, or read.

Oh yes I'm sorry, I understand what you're saying now. I don't know what I was thinking. Now I see how my desire to be creative and work impulsively to acquire objects of opportunity are all the result of my low self esteem. It's only people with confidence who enjoy being ordered around and being told what to do. Have you considered writing your ideas down to market as inexpensive self help books? You have a gift. You could be a help to so many. :)

Anyhow, I don't find working in squads fun at all, especially if it is a squad that's working together. I think maybe some of you have misunderstood me.

Squads are pretty useful. I tend to be in them most of the time I play for reasons like these:

- My name lights up in green when I get a kill :) Sounds egoistical, but I LIKE being able to confirm when my shot/grenade over wall/claymore was effective using only the corner of my eye.
- I get a better understanding of how the round is playing out by seeing the motion of my squadmates among the blue sea of dots.
- I get one extra spawnpoint with one guaranteed backup. Sometimes safer than normal points as well.
- It is usually easier to get rides/supply/medic aid from people in your squad.

Those would be my lone wolf reasons. Most of the time I join a squad in hopes of actual teamplay. Sometimes I get lucky and find a guy or 2 whose playstyles mesh with mine.
Grouping up is rather vital in BF2. The maps are huge on 32/64 player settings and there aren't enough vehicles to go around. Good use of the transport vehicles and APCs can go a long way and being able to spawn at a person is so underrated.

You don't really have to follow orders. Spawning at the squad leader and heading towards the nearest CP would probably be expected. Trying to cooperate intimately with someone you don't know will probably get you killed since you won't be able to appropriately trust each other, making you spend too much time thinking about your teammates rather than the enemy. Use your squad to stay alive. You might be able to medic them or avenge their deaths appropriately.
I might even say that staying together is a recipe for disaster. Artillery/aircraft will soon crush a squad that stays together. A 2-4 person squad can do tactical strikes, but 4-6 is often best off spreading out and doing what they'd do alone to some extent.

There are no DRAWBACKS to being in a squad. Join one now and just spawn on the leader if he is somewhere you want to be.
