    Squads suck

Since there are all these threads about squads bouncing around I thought I'd add my two cents.

Squads are unrealistic in BF2 (by implementation), and unfun.

I don't play games to be told what to do. I could care less if my team wins, nobody else does, and there's no reward for it unless you're the commander. I join a squad simply to add the time to my stats because it's required for certain awards. Most squads do not play together, especially on servers that don't have VoIP. Most squads do not play better than lone wolves, and as a lone wolf I have taken out entire squads with just a couple of hand grenades (and I'm a mediocre player at best). Whatever advantages a squad might have, the biggest is eliminated by taking out the squad leader - some squads will recycle leaders but that's rare and I'm not sure how helpful.

It has recently come to my attention that I play terribly as a member of a squad. I sometimes end up with a decent score because of support points, but my death to kill ratio usually tanks. I also have a lot less fun playing as a functioning squad. It's true the kits complement each other, especially in SF, but for me it doesn't offset the fun playing as a squad takes out of BF2.

Sometimes BF2 seems to be a game that was programed with an unrealistic idea of the gamer community. It seems to be geared to some kind of nonexistent elite professional gaming community, where 32 people who know each other form a tight group of players as a clan and then form squads and work together to take and defend CP's against another group of 32 players. I doubt that 99% of players fit into such a community and so it seems that Dice and EA created a game for maybe 1% of the people who actually ended up buying it (pure speculation on my part).

The ticket style/capture cp game play doesn't really promote team play as well as objective style FPS's team work like Enemy Territory - maps like Fuel Dump, Oasis, etc - and despite the fact you can't form BF2 like squads* and have no built in VoIP and stats are not recorded in a permanent record you'll find almost everyone working together to accomplish the game missions, a complete opposite picture of what is going on in BF2.

Anyhow, just my two cents - Squads are unrealistic, and unfun.

This was originally a reply in a thread (for about a minute) but I thought it deserved its own thread. It was also a bit off topic.

*You can form a squad but all that happens is that you see a list of members and their health and location (by an unhelpful grid coordinate)

I have to disagree with you. I find that most squads do work together to some degree - some better than others - and that it enhances both my sucess and my enjoyment of the game. And on those occasions where a squad works together exceptionally, it makes the game a completely different experience.

As they say, there's no I in team.

I partly agree with you. Squads are unrealistic, BUT FUN :)

The most fun I had while playing BF2, was when I was part of a teamplaying squad. Sadly enough, on public servers you dont see much of that anymore.

Therefore I mostly play with my clanmates, much more fun than being a lone wolf in a squad

I'm sure you already knw what stance I'm gonna take on the issue.
        :p

I find squads hell fun to play on and not only that, but we get stuff done.

I've also seen high level action. I used to run a 50+ active member "Tribe" in a diffrent game (BTW, I plan to NEVER do that again! Too much damned work!).

s|k, I'm curious tho... what exactly is it about squads that you find so un-fun? Is it purely because you do have a tendancy to score lower (unless you're playing a support role)?

Myself I find it's more mentally challanging trying to keep tabs on your squad mates, come up with good tactics that involve your squad's advantages, and balance your own agressioin against what's good for the team.

I also find it hugely gratifying when we can take out a position that is poutting up good resistance, or own any place on the map. Good squads even see a much better kill to death scores because you die a lot less thanks to medics 'n supplies.

        *shrug*
        That's my take.

I agree with you in the respect that most players in the gaming world will join a squad, then wander off in some totally different direction. Or if you're commander, you'll give a squad an objective and they're refuse you everytime. When this happens it is a totally big waste of time.

But when you find a squad that wants to work together it makes it a really good game, you complement each other by having one medic, support etc and capturing cp's is far more effective, stopping defenders from spawning back (which they get enough time for if you're taking the flag by yourself).

From what I can tell by your post, you're not even giving squads a try. Try sticking with the SL even if the other members of the squad are. It *should* be more fun and easier (to kill enemies and win flags) unless ths SL is a retard, in which case join a different squad or become a SL yourself.

            Re: Squads suck

Well I've played with s|k alot lately and it does get frustrating sometimes, we were on Warlord and I had the tank and he had the APC and these idiots just kept C4ing s|k with their ATVs...why they didn't ever go after me I have no idea but sometimes it does seem like the only way to keep a squad alive is to join a clan and constantly practice all the time like it's your job but that isn't everyone's idea of fun.

BF2 is the first game in the series I've played and before I ever bought it I thought that the spawning on the squad leader thing was sorta stupid but now that I'm used to it it makes perfect sense because I remembered trying to get some teamwork done with my friend on Day of Defeat and it would always go like this...

            HABO3 & Friend spawn
            HABO3: ok lets go
::HABO3 & Friend find some people to kill::
            ::friend dies::
HABO3: ok meet me where you died
            ::HABO3 dies::
Friend: ok I'll wait for you
            ::Friend dies::
            HABO3: ...ok...I'll wait for you
            repeat x100

and in Battlefield 2 how sucky would that be not having squad leader spawning especially with the distance you have to cover on some of the maps??!! It wouldn't be tolerable whatsoever! Although some weird stuff happens when you're a squad leader working with people you've never played with before, watching squad members spawn on you to go fight...it's like a part of their brain goes dead and they forget they have goodies like grenades, flashbangs, grenade launches, medikits and all that junk...they just spawn and stand around for 30 seconds before they finally realize they're playing a video game then they run straight at the enemy and without using any of said goodies engage targets with their primary weapon and expend all of 1 magazine before they're dead, what a waste! >_<

It's also hard for squad members to understand how to support their squad with a tank/APC...I'll say "hey someone get the APC (that no one on the rest of our idiot team has even thought to use) link back up with me and give us some support." They'll get the vehicle and run straight in on the flag because they think they're Tank God er something and get C4'd because neither I or anyone else could cover him while he was sitting on the flag.

somehow though 9 out of 10 times I manage to do REALLY ****ing good as squad leader, even when I'm just trying to hide somewhere so everyone can spawn on me I still end up with high k:d ratio and lots of points? I can't even remember the last time I had a squad leader that would hide somewhere for us so we could attack the enemy over and over but if I did...**** I'd have so many kills it would just be embarrassing for the opposing team for me to just keep respawning next to their flag and wasting them.

anyways s|k you just gotta work on acquiring targets faster, being aware of surroundings and using your secondary weapons more then you'll really kick ass.

                Aaaaaaaaaaaa hahaha. No.

That had better not be you friend.. the shame of exposure would be too great for me in this situation, should a person like myself be proven correct.

                And btw S|K...

by direct comparison, I'd recommend you give up the rambo attitude, it's negatively affecting you. True, stats mean nothing, but it's certainly indicating your k/d ratio is inferior to mine matey. You have over 6x my time in lonewolf, and you say squads suck, when I do so well in them?

Maybe its just the folks you play with, I recommend moving to New Zealand and playing on Iconz 7 or 9 or 10. Teamwork exists, and I have shown you it works.

                  Re: Squads suck

Sounds like you just need to experience a good squad.

I do not look at squads as being bossed around...and if I am - I leave. I hate all the spammed orders that come up from some leaders and commanders. I will agree with you on that pt.

However, being able to vocally communicate with others in the game makes it so much better. Just even for the simple act of laughing your ass off when you see a squad mates body launch through the air, or telling a buddy to turn around he is about to be stabbed in the back - simple crap like that.

You don't have to be in a clan - but I would recommend finding a regular group to game with. Finding a voice server (teamspeak or ventrilo) makes a HUGE difference IMHO.

You can still play lone wolf - but you are acting as a squad with the voice communication.

The group I regularly play with is not always in the same squad - we only join squads when we need to spawn on the leader - but we still work as a cohesive squad through voice communication.

I've been a member of some excellent squads in the past. but you're right, on the public servers no one seems interested in playing as a team. Lone wolf works for some but not for others.

But you'd seem much happier playing a single player game.

                            Squad work owns,
Even as a sniper I hate working without a squad. You sound like the kind of guy who never talks on VOIP and joins a squad just to spawn then leaves. People like that aren't welcome in a squad anyway.

Enjoy playing BF2 alone... if your gonna play games at least socialise while your doing it.
