Some things to try...
If you think it might be RAM, use relaxed timings. I.e 3-4-4-8. Set the CAS latency to 3 especially, this is the most likely setting to make your computer unstable. Also it gives very little (probably 1 fps) difference in performance on ATHLON64 machines (older PCs saw much more of a performance increase from tight timings).
The one setting that will affect your performance is the 1T 2T command rate thingy. This can affect performance 5-10%, so what im saying is that 3 4 4 8 with 1T is much better than 2 2 2 5 at 2T.
Test your ram using Memtest x86 + (search google.).
Bear in mind that BF2 is sensitive to ANY overclocking, so just run at stock speeds, ESPECIALLY your video card (including NVIDIA's auto-overclocking, as its really unreliable anyways).
If none of this helps, start trying to eliminate causes to the problem, disable devices you do not use in your BIOS (i.e onboard sound, firewire, serial ports), this wont harm your system. Alternatively if you do have onboard sound and use an add-in card, try using the other.
Try using PCI Latency tool (google.), can help performance and stability for some people.
Try and use the latest video and sound drivers. (audigy/x-fi users try the modded youp-pax fi, google it, for Nvidia cards i recommend drivers from www.tweaksrus.com)
Disable any services that you dont need. (services.msc)
Run msconfig and disable and startup items you dont need.
Especially disable any memory / cache tools or anything that interferes with your sound / video whilst playing a game.
Especially dont run MSN Messenger, it can sometimes alt-tab the game.
Try changing the cache amount for your sound card in BF2 - theres a line at the bottom of sound.con in battlefield2/mods/<bf2 or xpack>/settings/sound.con - change this from 90 to something higher. i.e 180.
Try and ensure you have upwards of 700mb AVAILABLE physical memory when you run BF2.
Ensure you have ample page file space available.
With AGP - modify your driving value in your BIOS, also try increasing your aperture size.
