Well if you have read the post "!!~Computer Reboot~!!"...ill bring you up to speed. I bought BF2 in sept, played for a good month with no problems, then it would reboot and restart my computer....no blue screen, just shut down and began loading windows. i scanned for viruses, but still didnt work. Check my RAM..still didnt work. Anyways...if you read the old posts you'd get up to date.

So one guy told me to make a new user in my Windows XP because it might be a process in my old user that is blocking my game....


Well....i uninstalled BF2 in my old user...went to my new user and re-installed it....on my old user i saved the patch, so i searched it on my new user, found it and unzipped the patch.....( by the way, when you download the 1.12 does your computer restart automatically, cause my rebooted itself right when it finished, much like my game does)...anyways...i go to try and play bf2 and it doesnt even start at all. All i get is black screen for about 5 seconds then back to windows. So my problem has gone from bad to worse....

Your computer should not reboot like that. At the risk of opening myself up to more arguments, I think your issue must be hardware related. The new user and re-install did not fix the problem and if it was a corrupt file in the old profile, that should have eliminated it. If you want to try one last software test, you can do a re-install of the OS. I think you said you tried that already so I don't think that's a viable step for you at this point.

Your goal now is to eliminate the hardware and isolate the problem. If you know anyone who has a video card as good or better than yours, I would ask them if you could try it in your system. Aside from the memory and the video card, it's harder to troubleshoot the other hardware and almost no answer is a freebie $$-wise. Usually if we can define the problem as being hardware related, we go bit by bit and find what part is messing up by swapping them out and trying again until we find the one thing doing it.
If you have any good friends that have a PC and don't mind, you can go one by one with things like the PSU, Video Card and Memory.

Problems that just pop up like this are usually attributed to failing hardware and most fo the time, I have seen it be a memory issue but I think we got that one out of the way. I have also replaced power supplies for the same reason in clients machines.

If none of this helps, I would begin to consider shelling out the dough at a local shop and letting a paid geek get in there and root out the issue for you.

OK...well i dont know anyone off hand with a better video card. But i somehow doubt its the card...i can play Half-life 2 with no problems...but ill try it. Its starting to look like i need to bring to a shop, or maybe consider a new one all togehter...would be nice. But definatly dont have the cash for it.

Anyways...ill keep posting. Parish, if u want to add me to MSn or something..that would be cool....so i can let you know whats goin on.

But anymore suggestions are welcome.

Is it a continual reboot, or just periodically? You could be looking at a heat issue, a driver corruption, memory (RAM) failure, or some other hardware or software breakdown.

Here are some steps to help diagnose this:

First, go to Control Panels and double-click on the System control panel. (If you don't see it, click the "Classic view" text in the left-hand column). Click the "Advanced" tab, then the "Settings" button under Startup and Recovery. Near the center of the window, uncheck the box by "Automatically restart", then click OK, and OK to close the System Properties box.

Next time the machine "reboots", you may actually be looking at a Blue Screen crash. Record the text on this screen. The important parts are the all capital words with underscores, and the word STOP and the hex codes that follow, such as:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
STOP 0x000050 (0x00000000,0x000000FE,0x560000,0x0000ce00)

And there may be a reference to a file name, often a .sys or .dll file.

You may also want to run a memory test. You can use the free Memtest86+ from http://www.memtest.org/. They have bootable floppy and CD images available for download. This test can take an extended period of time if you have a large amount of RAM in your system.

A. It could be caused by a lot of things, but it is usually a hardware problem, especially if it occurs randomly. A noisy power supply, loose screw under the motherboard, bad CPU fan, and memory, expansion boards, socketed chips, and cables that are not fully seated are among the common causes. Before you tell him to buy hardware, take it to your local shop to get checked out. Could be totally unrelated to your hardware, even though its doubtable (I had the same problem a while back).

hope this thread is still alive... i use to play bf2 fine... with the 1.12 patch.. worked fine for weeks... then yesterday i tried to load a map pc crashed... tried again 3 times kept crashing.. tried single player.. crashed... reinstaleld game and patch.. same thing... i unticked some box and it made a blue screen come up instead of crashing that said IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and all this other junk.. pleeeease someone help me fix this gay gay gay error

As far as the booting issues, your BIOS may be trying to boot from the BF2 cd and just getting hung and not moving forward. If that is the issue, unless you make a change in the BIOS, you won't get around that. The BIOS setting in point is the boot order.

i didnt read all those hundreds of posts, so i dont know if anyone else said this. but if u ARE an IT system engineer, you are supposed to know that BF2 install CD is not a system boot CD. even if u set ur CD-ROM as the first boot device in BIOS, system will never ever try to boot from a game installation CD by any means.

I study computer science in college and the next semester is going to be my last 4 months of college life. So where do u work as an IT system engineer? Lemme know the company name, so i will avoid being hired by them, cuz apparently their IT engineer doesnt even know such a simple thing.

ok i read the rest of the posts, parish u are full of bs, seriously.

mutrino was right. unchecking "auto restart" does NOT do any harm or damage to your computer. ur statement was ridiculous and just cracked me up in a sad way. by unchecking that option, system just does not reboot automatically. the crash has still happened. the only possibility of which a computer being not responding may cause damage is the crash due to overheating. but an instant reboot doesnt resolve overheating issues.

so unchecking auto restart is just like unchecking VPU recovery in ATi driver options, they do NOT (again) harm or damage ur computer any further, they only hide some symptons at certain point. (which is the only correct info that you have provided so far)

yes...we both have the same problem. I wish it was just a glitch or something and EA games would do something about it...because there are many people that have the same problem. Or have atleast a solution to the problem.

we both were able to play lots, but now it wont work...please help.

TRY THIS:
Go into bios and rais the CAS latency in your ram.
Then try playing BF2.
If this dosent work..Try lowering the volteg in your ram.
See if that solves it.
I hade the same simptoms with mine.
Turns out i hade to fined a new redline to run my memory, And retweak it.
remember...BF2 it a memory pig.

It sounds like you can run your pc just fine but when you load up the game into your memory your pc calvs....(memory dropping out).

alot of motherboards (espeically old ones) dont allow u to change the RAM latency and voltages, unless u got an overclock motherboard.

I'm having a very similar issue. When I first got BF2 I didn't have any problems, but after a while (possibly after first patch) it would randomly SHUT OFF my computer during some maps without any error or blue screen. The pc would just power off and I would have to restart it. Then I would experience the problem someone else was having where the system would not load into windows with the BF2 cd in the drive. It would get all the way past the XP booting screen and then hang until it restarted on its own. It would keep restarting and I would have to reinstall XP to recover it. I thought it was just me but now I see others are experiencing the same thing. As for the crashes, I thought it was my ram so I upgraded from 1 stick of Geil Ultra DDR433 512mb to 2 sticks of Corsair XMS DDR400 512mb (2-2-2-5). I even lowered my OC'ing to stock settings so I could achieve the CL2.

The ram increase improved performance overall for my system including when I first load into a map in BF2. It no longer lags for the first 5 min. I can start moving around and checking stats with no delay.

However, the crashes have gotten worse. Now they're more consistent, but the good news is that the past 2 times it has only crashed to the desktop.

Someone mentioned the Ram Timings and voltage as a possible problem and I will try different settings since the problem got worse after I changed these settings. Do you guys recommend any settings?

I'm going to be upgrading my case to the Koolance PC-426+ dual radiator integrated water cooling case in a couple of weeks but I want to make sure it's not anything else beforehand.

In-game settings:
Graphics: Medium; AA: 2x/Off


I've tried the following so far:

-Uninstall and reinstall BF2 completely (incl. reg entries)
-Patched with latest 1.12 patch since I also have Special Forces.
-Defragged about 6 times before I reinstalled.
-Removed all spyware and malware and scanned for all viruses.
-I closed all other processes while playing.
-Cleaned the registry completely and deleted any temp files on the system.
-I increased AGP aperture size (had no effect so I reduced it to 128 again)
-Disabled Fast-Writes and Write-Combining (still crashed)
-Made sure all heatsinks are on properly and temperatures are not spiking.

*** BE forewarned, doing what he suggested could cause your system to completely fail and be trashed requiring you to recover/re-install WinXP. Feel free to do it, but just wanted you to know that. Im a IT systems engineer and I swear that his advice WON'T fix your problem, it will only hide it and let your system get messed up even more****

I was just playing and it froze on me. Gave me this wierd error:

BF2:

memory.dll: chunk pools; free fails, should not come here!


What the hell does that mean? Good news is system hasn't rebooted.

Ok I think I was able to figure out what was causing the problem...

I uninstalled my video driver and cleaned out the system32 folder using Nasty File Remover then re-installed the newest version of the Dzer0point Catalyst Drivers based on the 5.11 drivers from ATI. I raised the ram latency to 2.5 and lowered the voltage to 2.60...now the game runs and it doesn't crash. I only played it for about 1 hour but that's longer than it's ever gone before. It even endured the problem maps that usually caused it to shut off. I definitely think it has to do with the ram and the timings. Since BF2 is a resource hog it probably puts too much stress on the chips causing an error.
