Re: Why is your computer not running BF2 correctly? --Look here--

Some are still missing the point of system optimization. The reason the game can peform differently on two identical machines is because while the specs are the same, isn't because the game sucks. It's because one of the computers isn't optimized as well. Anyone that puts the time into getting to know their system, the individual limits and strengths, and experiments with different settings, will notice a significant increase in peformance.

Having problems? Before you blame the game, which is a waste of time regradless of whether you're right or wrong, check the following:

Motherboard chipset drivers, videocard drivers, latest patches from Windows, latest game patches (yes, sometimes this will be a bad thing).

Windows settings? Turn off some of the candy (but you can keep the theme). There are some registry hacks that can really boost peformance.

Your BIOS! Do you have the latest version? Are the automatic settings correct? Sometimes things get enabled that will slow your computer down. Sometimes some things are disabled that you need.

Adware, spyware, malware, worms, viruses, bad installations, FRAGMENTED HARD DRIVES. Do you have Kazaa? Get rid of it reformat and start from scratch. Do you look at a lot of porn? Switch to Firefox so you stop having malicious software hijacking your system.

Everything you do affects your computers. If your version of windows allows it, create a restore point before every major change: before and after installing games, before and after patchs, etc.

Page file: regardless of how much ram you have, your computer will use your hard drive for virtual memory for certain functions. I have 2gb of 2-3-2-5 pc3200 OCZ ram that cost $250 and BF2 still accesses the pagefile. Make sure your pagefile is defragged often and if possible, move it closer to the beginning of your drive.

Your game is being pulled from your hard drive. The game disc is only there for verification that your game was paid for. If your drive is fragmented gameplay will suffer.

None of my suggestions cost money. None of it requires an upgrade. good luck

Thank you for reiterating and strengthening my argument Jofaba.

I think some people just beleive they can buy a computer from Dell and it will magically run everything perfectly forever, with no upkeep.

A computer needs as much care as, say, a car. Perhaps MORE

BF2 uses about 200MB of page file memory for me as well, just wondering how would use go about moving it to the beginning of the drive or finding out if it is at the beginningof the drive.

That was the stupidest comment ever, a cd is a circle, do songs come out in random bits, NO.

The beginning of a CD is the inside track

and i believe the same goes for a harddisk platter.

at topicstater, please, the game is bugged like hell, on PC's who aren't out of date at all it still causes many problems.

my car is warming up and I'm about to run out for an hour or so but when I come back I'll post some links about how to move/strengthen your page file, along with a hack (that I haven't tried yet) that suposably forces your computer to use ram for some virtual memory, thus giving a huge boost. Granted, BF engine has its problems and they need to be worked out. But i still think MOST of the people bitching about problems, simply lack the foresight to care for their computer.

Its comparable to someone saying they blame Ford because their mustang wont run good times at the track, when the owner hasnt changed the oil in 20,000 miles.
Yes! About half the people I know think the puter runs itself. Most of them have no clue about anything! I've had my puter since '02 and it still pWns. Every month or so = clean install. Frag. every week. Clean reg. everyday. I swear this puter will nvr fail me! w00t!

I understand it takes time and energy to learn. But, it's well worth it!

I've never had crashes, or anything wrong with BF2. Except the red tag.

So you spent $600 upgrading for a video game to work properly, when it should have worked fine on your original system?

                      Freshly formatted
                      3.0ghz P4
                      6800 128meg
                      1.5gigs of RAM
5mbps Cable Connection(in US), never have any problem on any other game or program, I monitor it(with a 3rd party program) and it never hiccups. I typically have a ping of 25-60ms
Sure it's not high end to your guy's budget, but not everyone can afford a new 7800GT, or think there's better things to pay money for. Let alone it's enough for high or atleast med-high on every game out today. I ran BF2 at 1024x768 mostly medium, 2 on low, 2 high, with 2x AA. SF has extreme trouble with the game. New drivers.

I get frequent disconnections and crashes. Go figure.

Thing is with Valve they are self funded, they can afford to take their time with their Engine with no publisher giving them stupid dates they have to be finshed by so their profit margins don't fall.

Okay I'm back but I changed my mind. Just go to tweakguides.com and read the Tweakers Companion, the Battlefield 2 guide, and the videocard teakers guide for whichever kind of card you have. We can all give hints on how to get small boosts in peformance but a general understanding of your computer is key. If you're not willing to do the research, then you're the bottleneck; not the game, not your computer. Good luck.

Most of what alot of you guys stated, about keeping your comp up to par and not having bad browsing habits, is pretty much common knowledge not worth trying to throw out as a revelation on a silver platter.

If someone were to have the time and patience, you could probably make the BFV engine share at least 80-90% of the visual quality BF2 has. 'Why' you say? Because you could toss a **** load more polys onto a vehicle or static model in BFV and just make the clients computer do more work at rendering it, that is not what I would consider an optimization. You could apply that **** to in game effects also, but that was just one example. In order to get more eye candy in their game, they just forced the client into doing more work instead of optimizing ****.

You could do that, but it would kill about 80% of the users computers who are playing it, and with the BF2 engine it is already needs a ridiculous amount of RAM due to lack of optimisation of the game.

And 'Thank You' for not making me feel left out in that opinion lol

Most of what is in BF2 could be done in BF42, even more so with BFV. Just wouldn't be able to do one part of the texture group, pixel shaders on the water and more than one height for water (ie fushe pass as an example if I remember right).
