    Re: Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45

I was holding off on getting this game for either the release or until I had a confirmation that my tax return was deposited, but turns out paypal screwed up a recent purchase and now I got the purchase completed but owe paypal. Well... they can wait a week or two. So, unless it's in stores tomorrow, I'll probably download this weekend =)

I think you'll like it. It's really nice, the vehicle maps aren't far of the size of BF2 maps, nice gameplay too.

What I found really strange was once firing a rifle, you must click LMB again to reload, pulling the bolt back. First few times I fired and waited, then remembered this little feature, by which time I was normally in a dire situation :) I think I'll get used to it though.

a bit of warning though: Once you know how things works in RO:Ost, i.e. stop getting owned and sorted graphics out, then BF2 feels sooooo stupid, I cant stress it enough, it's really unbelievable:).

Gameplay is awesome, it even makes me thinking I shouldn't get BF3, or QW for that matter simply because it's now entertaining compared to BF2 and the likes of that game.

All teenies that dont want realism and teamwork are gone, just a proper game with proper and serious gamers, guess they're in CS, CoD2 and whatever. What more do you want?

I tried the game, and it seemed to be quite good and had some nice features. I espected it to be a bit more "hardcore" and sim style, but it has still an interesting mix of arcade and realism. Not as good and entertaining for me as World War II online, or Operation flashpoint with WWII mod, and i'm eagerly waiting for a good competitor for those games.

RO doesn't seem to attract the n00bs like BF2. Even if they do play there is little they can do to p*ss you off, there's no choppers to crash

omg , that must be my game !

                        i am a teen , lol , but not that BF2 tube noobs !

i sold BF2 because of all lame actions , not realistic, no teamplay and lame EA marketing trick with SF weapons in regular BF2

i am playing now GRAW , very realistic and much teamplay with headset

but this game is also intressting i guess

                                Re: Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45

my thoughts? after having a good go of RO i think i can give my unbiased thoughts. the game, for what its worth, is quite good and it is obvious that ALOT of work went into this project...

the pros: it has a unique setting. the audio is quite immersive. ITS WW2 lol. its realism adds for a challenging gameplay. firing weapons and moving around take alot more thought and insight. the game isnt a hog....

the cons: its only real flaw is that it is done with the unreal engine and this lets it down in many respects... the graphics are quite cheesy in the open maps. i am yet to see a definitive bump/normal map in the game and the HRD bloom is just far too blurry to be a real benefit (i leave it on as the game is devoid of anti aliasing). the 3rd person player animations are clunky and robotic. the actual player movements are jerky and a little constrained at times. all in all it is the graphics quality and the way one moves through it that is going to be the major con for most people... before BF2 one would have said this has amply good graphics, but unfortunately we really are spoilt for choice when it comes to being given a good engine in the form of BF2... i actually think at the end of the day the BF2 engine (modded for ww2) will be able to represent infantry combat and movement much better than the Unreal engine can ever hope to do.

final thought? i realistically have to give this game 7/10.
whilst being a great concept and having alot of work put into it, it is the foundation tht this game is built on that brings its overall quality down. but dont let this alone sway you - even after each time i exit RO thinkin "cant handle those graphics anymore" i find myself thinkin about the game and going back an hour or so later... so really that is a good sign...

7/10 = great gameplay and environment/immersion. patchwork of improvemnents of an outdated graphics system dont equal the goodness of the game.

my advice? if you work full time such as myself and money isnt really of concern i suggest giving this a whirl (its friggin cheap) otherwise wait for FH2 - it may not be russian front but it will depict ww2 alot of more naturally and smoothely IMO....

                                jimbob out.
