Essex related story....

I was blowing up the US arty on the shoreline and me and a clanmate were KILLED by the US Essex....somehow the gunner managed to spam some of those chain gun rounds right to the beach

If you shoot about half way up the palm tree on the beach you can take out the guy on the aa, which is always fun.

Not many pilots actually use that tactic, But I love luring the J-10 back to the carrier, for some good wholesome chaingun fun for my friends

The AA emplacements on the US Essex are far weaker than they should be. Aside from the munition-based AA being less than stellar and missile-based AA being unpredictable/unreliable in general, the emplacements can be killed by any attack aircraft easily. A helicopter can destroy it with one TV missile and then proceed to spawn rape the flight deck. Planes are just as bad, as their cannons do as much damage to the AA emplacements as the vulcan cannons do to them, and then have the advantage of being a moving target instead of a sitting duck on top of that. Air units pwn the Essex's AA guns, making them a last resort instead of the monsters they should have been.

But whenever you fly out over the essex (being hunted) they never shoot at the enemy airplane! Why is that? Does anyone ever use it???

Be happy that the essex even has guns, the mec and chinese main base has only a IGLA with only two missles.

No, I spawn as engineer, form a squad called air defense, and "defend" the carrier. When the island arty get's taken I jump in a boat, go kill the bad guys, fix the arty and return to the carrier. Also take care of UAV and SAT and those pesky campers who bail out of the chopper (pig) and try to camp the spawn (the Phalnx is particulary effective against enemy troops).
Once the airfield is secure I go on the offensive and try to help by fixing/gunning for the blackhawk.

I'm also quite the observer of various forms of plane whoring / tkee'ing (forcing pilots to TK)/chopper whoring/etc. I think I've seen it all, standing in front of plane during takeoff, planting C4 on plane/chopper, shooting at plane/chopper, M203 at plane/chopper, landmines, sniper rifle, etc. It's just amazing what people will do to either get the plane or stop others from doing so.

Lots of people seem to forget that there are 2 guns on the Essex -- those guns are weaker than they should be but they can take out a plane in one pass [I did this twice the other night and those planes didn't come back to bomb the deck].

I'd hate to be a pilot to have 2 skilled gunners firing at me while sending out missiles.

I'd hate to be a pilot to have 2 skilled gunners firing at me while sending out missiles.

A second person mans this gun [It would be overkill if one person could control both of these simultaneously]. Most people don't use this gun however because most attacks on the carrier don't occur on that side of the ship, so that gun would only be good for when the jet flies over the ship.
