Re: USS Essex
Any good pilot will crush the aa on the Essex. I know, I'm in the top 50 worldwide on aa and you got to be ready to die a lot. If the pilot isn't that good, you have a better chance but if you fire your missles you are more likely to get "Team Vehicle Damage" or "Don't hurt your teammates". The best strategy is to hit them hard on the way in and let missles loose while they go away (if you are still alive). One secret is to wrench on the mount after the first pass, at least they don't get the kill (you get "no mored") when you die as they shoot up the mount.
This is a game - if this was reality, the planes would not stand a chance. I was on the USS Virginia during the '80s, a guided missle cruiser with the mission of protecting the carrier from air threats. Carried up to 100 SM2 anti-air missles and was equipped with 2 Phalnx CIWS (close in weapons system) that were deployed after the Sheffield went down off Argentina. Basically the same missle/gun combo on the Essex. The missles would take out a plane at 60 miles (was impressive - saw it take down many a drone). As for the phalnx, it was a weapon of last resort but was aimed/fired by a computer. They actually had problems practice firing them because they would eat the target then start to travel up the tow line towards the tow plane. Three thousand rounds a minute of 50 cal depleted uranium (that's 50 per second) was mighty impressive though. Sounds like a chainsaw on steroids. And the rain of sabot's coming off the guns is impressive also.
You might actually have been better off with the armament from the USS Essex carrier (circa WWII).
4 twin & 4 single 5"/38 gun mounts; 8 quad 40-mm/56-cal gun mounts; 46 single 20-mm/70-cal guns mounts
