It only involves another old PC, you already threw out, or had it stored in the basement
You need only XP to use ICS. You don't need a Windows Server product. You can just set it up on an XP client and this XP can be used for other things than gaming. If someone is gaming on this gateway XP it could probably cause problems, but the upside is that can use the PC for more than just being a router.
Normally when gaming you would just use the XP ICS PC as you would use the Linux router, for routing only and not game on it.

If you install Windows Server you get ICS of course, but also the more powerfull DHCP, but that often isn't needed in a Small Business or Home environment. Plus you get a great deal more of course.

I just suggested the Windows ICS as an alternative because most ppl would stay clear of attempting to utilize Linux, and 'just' buy a router, when in some cases they don't need it.

But think of it this way, if most ppl can't figure out to right-click on a LAN connection in XP and enable ICS, or run the Wizard that sets it up for you, then they most likely will never fathom Linux.

I can understand why you suggest Linux as cost are lowered, and works if you have and understanding for basic networking, and runs okay on lower-lower-end PCs.

I just passed my last exam needed to become MCSA (Microsoft Certified System Administrator) today   :yay: and hopefully getting my MCSE (System Engineer) next week, so I'm a little biased towards MS products. But no more biased than I use Firefox all the time and only IE if site is coded to IE standards only, and there is not choice.

Thx, and good luck to you too, when you reach the time to take the exam.

Do you have any certifications already? Are the Wireless exams hard?

The MS certifictions covered in MCSA (and MCSE) are my first, so I'm real happy to be finished soon. I started on the course in April.

CWNA is not bad at all If you have a general knowledge of WI-FI.
