Veteran's Day - Thank you

Just a quick post for all of you out there that currently served, or have served in the past - THANK YOU.

From someone who never has been apart of the military, and never planned to - I thank those that chose to. We would not be where we are today without you.

PS - Please do not turn this thread of thanks into a thread of rant.

Specifically my Grandfather(Thunder bird, Anzio) and my uncle(10th mt. division, Italy) both awarded the bronze star, you will never be forgotten...

many thanks to those who served our country...especially those on the uss new jersey. i walked her decks yesterday...after asking permission to board the boat, i leaned down and touched that original teak deck, closed my eyes, and said a prayer of thanks to all the brave men (and women) who went into the fire...


this plaque sits just outside the admiral's bridge (yes, bull halsey's bridge) mounted on the bulkhead of the port side 5 inch mounted gun...when the marines stationed on board were at GC - battlestations, they would be relieved of guard duties in the sensitive sections of the boat (radio room, cypher room, etc.) and they would man these guns. before the installation of the tomahawks, there were 6 of these batteries, 3 aside, just of center of amidship. these turrents were completely closed and unventalated - navy regs say they must be to save the crew from bio or chem weapons. i thought of how hot and loud it was in there when she fired in anger. i thought about how crazy it would be that this ship could land a 100 pound shell on my house, 10 miles away, and not even break a sweat.


the 5 inch turrents..


then, the forward main turrnets...this photo was shot from the river guide's bridge, just foward of the main bridge. 17 inches thick the armor protecting those main 16 inchers. she could launch shells the weight of voltzwagons 40 miles....with the accuracy of 50 yards. that's half a football field.

after ww2, they tested the strength of her armor against the less nimble but heavier battleship yamato. while she could outrun the yamato by at minimum 6 knots, the yamato could outgun her. the japanese vessel had 18 inch main guns and, it was feared, had they met in battle, the new jersey would be easily bested by this beast. the post war tests indicated the main guns would have held up to direct hits from the yamato. yes, the deck might be in bad shape, but the 5 layer hull and and the foot and a half thick armor would protect her.

only two sailors died on her decks through her four comissions. she was decorated 19 times, last serving in the gulf war of 1991.

when i saw the seamen's berths, how cramped it was, i remembered the sacrifice.

as i left the ship, i looked forward, stood and faced the Culpepper, (a version of the our flag the navy allows all vessels to fly forward after 9/11) and saluted. i turned after and, even though i could not see her, and snapped a sharp salute to old glory, faithfully fluttering aft, flying as a testiment to freedom, and to those who gave the last full measure of dedication everywhere - in defense of our nation.

sappy, i know, but no less important. men died to allow us to continue to do this... post here on a website freely, read it, and flame me (if you so chose).

Though I have served four 21 years, I don't feel I need thanked for something I have thoroughly enjoyed doing. And if I had to do it over I would. The military has taken me places I would have never seen, meet people I would have never met. And allowed me to drink beer, in their country of origin, that I would never been able to drink. American imports suck.
Now this is my last veterans day on active duty, my next, I will be retired.

I want to thank my uncle Joe, US Army, WWII. My uncle Ron, USMC, Vietnam.
My Dad US Navy, Vietnam and Cuban Missile crisis. and my brother US Army National Guard, recently returned from a year in Iraq and he was in the AOR with me during Desert Storm.

Although I spent 6 years on active duty, I never actually got deployed to a combat zone. I guess I should be happy about that. However, those 6 years of my life are what made me who I am today and while there were some rough times, I wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING in the world.

I specifically thank my grandfather. He served in A Co. 37th Tank BN. 4th Armored Division. He was on the beaches of Normandy, served in the Battle of the Bulge and fought in Bastogne. It was because of him that I chose to serve my country and although he just passed away last month, his actions will NEVER be forgotten.

The military is not for everyone, but if you ever have the urge to serve, I highly recommend it. It will be the most rewarding thing you will most likely ever do in your life. I know it was for me.

My great grandfather served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII.

Thanks to all who have kept this country free and safe. There is truly no one braver than those who have served.
