i think someone needs to post a thread titled "Chopper Pilot's Guide to being a GREAT pilot" cause in the one out of 25 times i get in a chopper i have a good pilot and that one time he and i both usually get top 3. the other times i get pilots crashing into trees...etc....

The fundamental problem with being an excellent pilot is a lack of point opportunities outside of assists: essentially, it's a lot of work for very little pay-off. Think about it for a moment and you will understand why there are so few pilots out there.

I'm not referring to the jack-of-all-trades here either: they're easy to find, but often enough, their flying skills are merely adequate. It takes a very special kind of person to want that seat at all times... otherwise, you're left with people who can do the job but would rather be TVing or letting the pilot circle a flag while they rack up the points.

despite that people do find flying fun! somthing as simple as that can easily get many good pilots out their. i usually find that their are plenty good pilots, BUT they freak when being shot or they use their flares as soon as the missle lock thing appears>DUMB>whenever im in a plane or more occasionaly anti air i lock on until i see them let rip of flares then rain missles on them. having said that their are plenty of good pilots. that just make silly mistakes, they can hover, they can barrage, they can out maneuver but may hit a tree or get hit every one in a while. give people a god damn break.

You mistake my intentions: all I'm saying is that people would much rather be gunning and getting points, hence the ratio of pilots to gunners. Naturally, since there are less dedicated pilots, you're unlikely to find a really good one.

                Simple.

ahh, aggreed their, in my case, i only gun in helos because my pilot skills are not up to scratch were my gunner skills far supass my piloting at any time, also if we get blown up then it ent my fault ^^ (unless its annother helo lol)
but EA have tried to alter this a little by making only the pilot get capture assist points for example, if thats what their into. but then again its very dangerous for helos to hover over bases, as nearly everything poses a threat, snipers, AT, TOW, all vehicles even buggys to an extent. this is where they rely on the gunner. who frankly most arnt up to scratch with, and the teamwork is poor with most too.

... and that's the reason why I get so pissed off when people want to nerf the helicopter: it's already everyone's b*tch, what the f*ck else do you guys want? Maybe we should make it shoot flowers or something, then they'd all be happy.

Re: Chopper Pilot's Guide to being a GREAT gunner

Ok ...I would like to make two points. Many people I have played online with, and the regular pilots I fly with, all know me as a very, very good gunner. I am reluctant to say 'great' because I can have bad nights, when it seems I cannot hit anything. But I know that will be temporary, or short-lived, and I will get kills. When I am having a bad night, I know there is 2 causes for it.
(point one) A good gunner knows and understands what a "hit box" is. He/She also knows how lag effects TV missle shots. With this in mind, when I find myself missing more than normal, I know it is caused by one or both of these factors. I know I must adjust which part of an enemy chopper to guide the missle toward in order to register a hit. A good gunner knows the 'hitbox' of a chopper is larger near the tail than the nose. This is why it is easier to hit an enemy chopper from the side than straight on. Depending on the shot or circumstances, I will try to guide a missle in from the side, bottom, or top to increase the size of the 'hitbox', and therefore increase my chances of hitting the target. In the case where the lag is great enough, sometimes it will appear I am missing the chopper, and still getting a hit. Then again, sometimes it will appear the missle is flying right through the choppers cockpit, and not hitting. When this is happening, I will aim more for the tail, or even to actually miss the tail. Nonetheless, understand where the 'hitbox' is, and how to adjust for lag.
(point two) It is soooo easy to tell a good pilot. To me a good pilot has 2 concerns, 1: to setup targets, and 2: to keep us alive. I try to spend 90% of my time looking forward to better see what the pilot sees. More times than not, the pilot will see targets first, or recognize danger first, IF he/she is doing what I consider thier 2 most important priorities of setting up targets, and trying to keep us alive. :-) A good pilot knows that altitude is our friend. Flying at a good altitude for the situation, Tanks, APCs, or AT personel have little to no chance of taking us out before we can destroy them. When I hop in a chopper, say in Dalian Plant, and the pilot lifts off the carrier, then flys towards land six feet off the water, I know I am not with a good pilot, and we will be dying soon. I would rather 'solo' and die, then get killed every 10 seconds with a poor pilot. On the other hand, if the pilot immediately gains altitude, and starts looking for targets, if he/she has reasonable manuvering skills, I should be in a for a good ride. With a reasonably good pilot, I should get 40 to 50 kills per round, and with my regular pilots, I routinely get 60 to 70. A good chopper team can totally dominate, and make the difference to the winning side.
One last thing ...if you cannot use a TV missle, and in a public server, do not get into the gunners seat of a chopper. That will make even a poor pilot mad at you, and you will die often anyway. This is a very good thread, and I am glad to see it. I agree with all the tips, and if followed, a good chopper experience can be had by everyone. Practice ...practice ...practice.
                        Good luck, and have fun.

it isnt very convincing to blame every one of your mistakes on lagg or poor piloting. that just makes you look way too overconfident with yourself and have people like me flaming you saying how stuck up u sound. most players arnt so good at or prefer not to attack choppers without the right weapons. those are AA missle turrets, PKMs and anti tanks. M95s almost never work unless you areon the same level as them but their are a few who are proficent at helo ghosting. i was in a reformed clan where we practiced such as guiding anti tanks into the cockpit, wich is an instant kill but it still doesnt work too often and gives your position away. vehicles obviously are a threat but also a danger to the driver as its a helos main target. so infantry are not such a bigger problem as u think. therefore your gunner can afford to miss, i meen telling sum1 not to gun on a public server... u have no right to deprive sum1 of that joy. yes they may not be the best gunner you have ever co piloted with but that doesnt meen they shouldnt give the gunners seat a go. although the aim is to win try and respect the fact alot of people are playing the game for fun so as well as trying to be the best u can keep in mind that its still a game and going solo in a chopper isnt going to make it any more enjoyable for other people, if u feel u cant be in a chopper with sum1 then dont go in the chopper. but do not hoard it to deprive them of the right to use it.

routinely getting 60-70 kills per round is a little hard to believe when your chopper kdr says 2.0124. it should be alot higher, even with 40-50 kills per round. not to say I'm doubting you, but it just seems a little exaggerated.

Re: Chopper Pilot's Guide to being a GREAT gunner

                              Ok...

first, what i am saying about not getting in a chopper in a public server is to at least be able to know how to use the tv missle. You dont have to be good, just know what to do. I am happy to fly anyone around, (although I am not the best pilot), but its very frustrating when the pilot linesup shots, and the gunner is trying to shoot a tank with the machine gun, or other choppers repeatedly take you out because the tv missle is not being used. I would rather gun for a bad pilot, than pilot for a poor gunner. Maybe I could have stated what I meant there better, but the point I was trying to make is to get the basics, then go public.

second, you are correct, my KDR in a chopper is 2. I dont get alot of time with my favorite pilot, but when I do, 60 - 70 kills is not unusual (no way would I say thats average, just not unusual). Recently, I was able to get in 2 rounds with him, and got 120 kills over the two rounds. If the only time I was in a chopper was when I was with my favorite pilot, it would be way higher for sure. But that is not the case. What brings my KDR down the most, is when I am forced to solo. I am lucky to go 50-50 when I do, because like I said, I am not the best pilot (but it is good practice). I never prefer to go solo. I believe the chopper is meant to be for a team of two, and soloing is only for when thats not possible. Look up Fur10us, that is the pilot I enjoy being with the most. I dont know what his KDR is, but I know him to be an awesome pilot, that really knows how to keep us alive and line up shots. Also, look up (TM)Wilson, he is a clanmate that is a very good gunner.

Lastly, my intention here is not this to be a boast. There are lots and lots of gunners (and pilots) better than me. This thread was about what makes a good gunner (and possibly a good pilot). There are lots of levels of game play to shoot for, from basic to great. There is no doubt that a better understanding of the 'hitbox', will be a part of making anyone a better gunner. I hope this explains my intentions better, and I'm sorry if it doesn't. Practice, ...and enjoy the game. It IS fun.

I've organised with my pilot to use a code-command for when he's lining me up for a TV missile shot- (Usually the 'Go Go Go' radio command) mostly because we both don't have microphones; but it's also very convenient, and it's worked out like a dream (thats if dreams work out). On the Cobra, because the TV missile is pretty much directly in line with the pilot's targeting reticle, I can spot the target I want them to shoot or destroy.
