yea that happens because stingers are heat-seeking missiles and will go after anything that's hot.

my question is why aren't there any radar-based AAs? why aren't there any radars that shows the jets? what is this the 19th century?? they've been using radars since ww2!!

Because dice spent too much time coding and modelling the jets to make them anything less then overpowered.

Of course the missile loses lock if it flys past the plane doesnt they do that irl too?

Sorry to boast your expectations (or mine).
Lockon has nothing to do with the AA vs. Jets problem.

Aircraft should be an option for every server.. imo.

It would be easy for this to be added into the BF2CC and game..

Jets within BF2 are a total joke.. Theres nothing you can do about them,
except participate in the jet spamming yourself.. most every player in
BF2 is infantry... 99% of the time you have no defense against jets..
All you can do is watch them continually spam the bombs on you, or even
          their own teammates..

At least with choppers their slow and hovering movement makes them
good targets for AT kit people, like myself.. but jets are just there for
the little kiddies of the bf2 community to goof around in.. they serve
no real purpose within the game, and are no help to any team I have
          ever been on..

Give me the best jet pilot in BF2... and I still wouldnt want him on my
team....totally useless to the goals of BF2...which are to control points..

Jets are a joke in BF2.. ruins more games than anything else..

Theres alot of skilled pilots that would still dominate but it would be more realistic and fair.
Dumb American...The speed indicated on the HUD is registered in km/h, meaning it uses the SI, not the Imperial System. Did you really believe the jets could fly 1800km/h without afterburners? There are only a few jets which can do that, one of them is the Eurofighter. Currently there are no American fighterjets capable of that?

Re: The core causes behind BF 2's jet situation.

I'm gonna throw in my 2 cents and see what happnes.

I understand that SAMS need to be fixed badly. And that aircraft in the game are very overpowered. But some of theses ideas proposed baffle me. Missiles that follow your airplane everywhere it goes?? What is the point in even having one then. I'm saying this of course cause I fly planes. And yes it should be very hard to bomb uncappable bases and that everytime I get in a plane I should worry about AA but not to a point where they don't miss what so ever. All the AA guy really has to do is point and click to down a plane each time? That seems a bit unfair. giving troops AA kit wouldn't be that bad of an idea. Also to who said aircraft are a joke in BF2, aircraft and vehicles in this game make it what it is. One more thing, many of you talk about fixing AA, I've heard little to no talk about fixing the missiles on the plane. Even an F35 can dodge missiles fired from other planes. Plus making these missiles better might make people think twice about bombing when they have some one on their tail or even incline mroe pilots to dogfight than bomb all day.

BTW very nice read lots of good informantion and arguments.

*EDIT* Ohh I forgot to add that fighters should not have bombs or if that is so hard for EA/DICE to change at least limit them to only one.

Here's an interesting article form "The Scotsman" newspaper,

Eurofighter a shooting star in clash with US jets

IT might be over budget and years late but the Eurofighter Typhoon has shown that it can shake off America's best fighter plane and shoot it down.

A chance encounter over the Lake District between a Eurofighter trainer and two F-15 aircraft turned into a mock dogfight, with the British plane coming off best - much to the surprise of some in the RAF. The episode was hushed up for fear of causing US blushes.

For a project 10 years late and $8bn over budget, it is a welcome piece of good news.

The 'clash' took place last year over Windermere when the two-seater RAF Eurofighter was 'bounced' from behind by the two F-15E fighters.

The US pilots intended to pursue the supposedly hapless 'Limey' for several miles and lock their radars on to it for long enough so that if it had been a real dogfight the British jet would have been shot down.

But much to the Americans' surprise, the Eurofighter shook them off, outmanoeuvred them and moved into shooting positions on their tails.

The British pilots themselves were almost as surprised at winning an encounter with an aircraft widely regarded as the best fighter in the world

Re: The core causes behind BF 2's jet situation.

i've thought more about it: i think each airbase, including the carrier, should get an air radar that can detect planes within a certain range (like a little less than 1/3 of the map?) and show them on the map. it can launch AA missiles that will track and lock on enemy planes as long as they are in this zone. this should prevent enemies from bombing airfields and carriers... the planes can use countermeasures against the missiles of course, but given how long ittakes a plane to reload the countermeasures, it has a good chance to hit. this should give ground troops some kind of "safety umbrella" without making the game too unrealistic (some grunt on the ground taking down a jet? yea who's ever heard of that... :\

The F15 is the best fighter in the world? That is news to me. No offence but untill a fighter can take on the best up to date russian and american, british and even swedish (Gripen Ftw) you got nothing to brag about.

The Raptor doesn't use an ab to reach speeds above mach 1.5 It is capable of more, but they have a target speed in mind.

And for the guy with the woody about the Eurofighter taking on two F15s in a mock, you can read reports of the Raptor routinely taking on six or more F15s at a time. We also have one of the largest air forces out of three countries in the world (China and Russia) that just the sheer numbers alone would overwhelm another countries airforce (aside from the obvious two I mentioned). But again, why are we discussing real world **** in video land?

Maybe now we can get back on topic and leave the petty ass **** for the OT part of this board.

Re: The core causes behind BF 2's jet situation.

Baseraping is far too easy with jets. Gulf of Oman is a good example of that. MEC has no other defence against jets except good pilots but that's no use when the pilots can't even get in the air because of the baseraping. It's a bit easier for US team in the carrier thanks to a proper AA gun but that's pretty impotent weapon against jets too. Far too easy to evade and bomb.

I think the airports should have far better and simply more than one AA guns. The "heatseeking" missiles are definetly the weakest link in AA thanks their poor "seeking" abilities. With warning sounds for pilot, it's way too easy to simply run away from the range of the missile or even evade the missiles without flares.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, '42 had pretty good AA-vs-Aircraft balance. Good pilot could always bomb the living **** out the opposing team but if even 1 player bothered to learn how to predict the enemy planes tactics, he could then keep "his flag" clear of enemy planes with the AA-gun which was also good against ground troops in some cases.

In 2, even with a helicopter, it's way too easy to avoid/destroy the AA-tank which has these poor missiles, crappy crosshair and extremely slow movement.

Maybe AT-units should have somekind of EFFECTIVE AA-missile too. This could bring more unpredictability in anti-air war since now the planes and copters know exactly where the stingers/iglas are. I doubt that anyone would like to play as an AAonly-grunt, like the one in BF:V.

POE looks promising with the hand held stingers and the SAM Sites (SA-7 DROOOOL), i think it's basic prinicipal to make different AA for chopper and jets, since an AA that's decent against planes would be overpowered against choppers.

While i think aircrafts should be powerful, it seems Dice wanted them to be overpowered - and there's a fine line between powerful and overpowered.

Re: The core causes behind BF 2's jet situation.

I forget if I've already made a comment on this.

The core cause of the Jet problem is the players, e.g. start playing Oman yesterday there is a USMC pilot and he's 10-1 k/d, ohhh a dogfight I think.

The guy isn't bad although he's flying slow to take our chopper but he's quite alert. So we start fighting, long dogfights, all over the map I stay with him and manage to get him down a few times.

He then leaves the server, then you have a 'Jet situation', AA a solution? What AA? after a few mins we controlled the mainland I try not to base rape so the carrier AA doesn't matter. They don't have a good pilot, so anyway they try to leave I've got them, they actually hit me a few times from chopper / boat guns but that doesn't do hardly any damage.
