ok i can understand the personal preference thing but how are they done badly? what do you find wrong with them?... not flaming just asking?

      Re: videocard 6600GT WTF

I have a MSI 6600GT here, overclocked, and can run at the "High" overall setting which is pretty much everything on High except textures and lighting. With 4xAA. Since it lagged like a mofo with textures and lighting on high, I'll try following one of your suggestions and setting just one of those on high.

Honestly, I'm not complaining about this card at all, for only $150, it's a huge step up from my Radeon 9550. I can't justify paying $300 more for a 7800 that lets me bump the settings up just a tiny bit more.

        I have a P4 3.0GHz, 1GB RAM and a 6600GT 256MB.

I manage to put textures, ,texture filtering, terrain and geometry on high and everything else on medium with 2xAA. It manages around 40-50fps on average.

6600GT runs BF great on my box.

I can run everything high with 4xaa, and it runs fine. Dynamic light is the only setting that slows it sometimes.

            Re: videocard 6600GT WTF

Well I was NOT complaining about my 6600GT card, fact is I knew when I bought it that it was more of a minimum upgrade just to play BF2. (My last card was a Ti and didnt support DX9). My only thing is that I do notice a diff between Low and Med textures, I thought the 128MB would only allow low textures so until I broke down and got a 256 card I couldnt get the better textures. I am only wondering what the difference is for the people on here who can run Med textures with the same card. There must be some other thing that is allowing the better textures beside the 6600's onboard RAM. This is important because I have two choices to upgrade, both are about $300 bucks.

            Option 1 - New CPU($150)/RAM($110)/Motherboard($70)= ~330

Advantages - Going to much newer/faster CPU include FSB going from 266 to 1000. Extra stick of RAM will give me matching pair, can run Dual Channel on new board. New MB has AGP4/8 but also PCIe x16 so I can use same video card but get PCIe slot to upgrade later. Will also make whole system better not just 3D applications like BF2.

Downside - pain in the *** with motherboard replacement prolly a whole Win install. Computer is plenty fast except for BF2, why not just get the better vid card and call it a day.

            Option 2 - 6600GT 128 >> 6800GT 256 ~$300

Advantages - Easy! Vid card is best upgrade for BF2 if have enough RAM etc already. Just a card swap.

Disadvantages - Current MB has no PCIe slot, there are few AGP cards available now, and will certainly be hard to find AGP motherboard in the future to support an expensive AGP card purchased now.

            Current System
Gigabyte GA-7DX Board (Old but good)
            AMD XP Socket A 2.1
            1.5 GB OCZ RAM (1GB+256+256)
            XFX 6600GT 128
            Audigy Gamer

p.s.- Have already spent $50 for game, $80 for new sound card, $150 for new vid card to play this game... add another $300 upgrade and I will be pushing $600 invested in BF2. Not to mention countless hours playing. There is an option 3 upgrade not mentioned - hack up and sell off current computer, use funds to buy laptop that doesnt play BF2 - then go outside - possibly get sunshine, or converse with people about something besides tactics and enemy dispositions

Your best bet would be to ATLEAST get 1 gig

                          Re: videocard 6600GT WTF

The ram is the key. Im running 2 computers with a 6600 256mb ddr pcie on 1 and a 6600 256mb agp on the other. The pcie machine has 3 gig of ram and the agp has 1 gig. They both run the game ok but the agp one can only run low and medium settings mixed, the pcie can run everything at max, all higest settings.

Yes thats 6600 not the better 6600 gt. So I would say if you try and get as much ram as you can, around 2 gig you should be set. ok. Red

i have a pc with 2 gigs, 3.2ghz, and a 6800gt, all settings on high 4xaa, highest res. and my other pc is 2 gigs, 3.2ghz, 6600 256mb, settings on mediem, no aa.

                              I would recoment atleast a 6800gt mayb a 7800gtx.

Funny stuff. Sad... but true. BTW go with option 1, you'll see a much bigger improvement in performance.
