dude, did you not read my post? your PC is better than mine. get MORE ram BF2 will use up to 2GB of memory. If I can play on high settings you should be able to with enough ram. and a great net connection. My fiber optic net connection is 5Mbps down/2Mbps up.

Ok well i buy this 6600gt 128MBcard thinking it will make all my games run better on higher settings, well it dosent! Like i can play bf2 on high everything but shadows thats where it kills me. Runs great on farcry but nothing newer.

I am running on a AMD athlon 64 3000+ 2.1GH GeiL 512 PC 3200 X2 memory K8n platinum mobo and a 160GB HD.

So I was thinking about getting the 6600Gt 256 but im not sure how much better that will be, so maybe i should save up and get that 6800Gt.

you have a 6600GT! what were you expecting? top settings in a next gen game? i have an albatron and it runs smooth on medium 2xAA just dandy.... just turn it down a bit, there seriously is not that much difference... i hate to say it but the 6600GT seems to be really a bog standard now... and lay off the 6800 - wait for 7800... as soon as the next gen consoles come out all us 6 series and lower are going to be made obsolete.... damn damn damn time for an upgrade...

I agree with jimbob, BF2 is quite a graphically advanced game and for that you'd need a graphically advanced card such as the 7800 to run it in all of its glory. Having to turn the graphics down however doesn't affect the gameplay or enjoyment all that much.

I'm running a Galaxy 6600GT (comes factory overclocked) on a P4 2,4GHz machine with 1Gb Ram at the following settings:

1024*768
Terrain - Med
Effects - High
Geometry - Med
Texture - Med
Lighting - Low
Dynamic Shadows - Off
Dynamic Light - Low
AA - Off
Texture Filtering - Medium

Everything runs smooth and without a problem. I could up some of the graphics on some of the maps and still run without a problem but these settings are fine and 100% problem-free for me. Sure, it would be nice to be able to max everything out but it still looks pretty good at these setting.

Unfortunately I spend too much time looking at the 15 seconds to respawn screen to really enjoy the graphics anyway.

I have a 9800Pro and I play lag free with all settings on high draw distance 100, everything on, 2xFSAA 8xAF 1024x768 32bit

But i have 1.75GB of Ram. 1GB+256mb+512MB DDR400@333

when I had 768mb only...it ran for shiiit. the RAM makes a BIG BIG BIG difference.

hmmm, all high AND 2xAA 8xAF with a 9800pro?? I call BS, be honest now. Sure you can play on high, but what do you get 10fps? I have 2gb of ram and and X800XL 2xaa 4xaf and the fps struggles sometimes (low 20's) on 64player servers and I run medium/high settings (mostly medium).

Until recently I had a Gigabyte 6600GT 128 AGP (@525/1150) and ran BF2 at the settings below, with frame rates averaging 40+ fps.

1280x960x85hz
Terrain - Med
Effects - Med
Geometry - High
Texture - Med
Lighting - Med
Dynamic Shadows - Off
Dynamic Light - Low
AA - x2
Texture Filtering - Medium

I thought it looked sweet and it ran very smooth. Now I have an Albatron 6800GT 256 @ 425/1150 and run at

1280x1024x70hz
Terrain - High
Effects - High
Geometry - High
Texture - High
Lighting - High
Dynamic Shadows - low
Dynamic Light - low
AA - x4
Texture Filtering - High

It runs everything high, but the fps drops a little during big battles, which is why I reduced a couple of the settings.

There's no point in upgrading to a GF6600GT 256. This will give you more texture memory, but the architecture is basically the same as the 128 so you will still be stuck with the same settings you have now probably.

why the hell do you all turn shadows off!!!! i would gladly compensate in other areas to be able to have my models in game look like they should be where they should be.... you guys may argue that it dosnt add much but from a 3d point of view a shadow can add ALOT of perspective and depth to an image - not to mention shooting people round corners and being aware of noobs above you with GP 30's

also a lot of the buildings look positively crap with shadows turned off.... so why do it?

not that i'm having a go at you guys but it seems a little odd to play such a nice game with good hardware and turn off one of the lynchpin settings of the game... sure on a geforce 4 or some crap but on 6600 +? what good are half the textures and geometry if you dont have dynamic shadows to back them up....

I only have 512 so i've pretty much given up on playing till i can afford to buy more

I also bought a new graphic-card (Nvidia 6800) but it didn´t help much.
It´s all about the RAM size. 2 gigs allows you to run everthing on high.
Just my 2 cents.

You can play on all high settings, but frames per second would be poor. Don't believe everything you read.

Personal preference. I prefer smooth outlines with 4xAA and high geometries over the dynamic shadows in BF2 which are poorly done anyway. The buildings etc still have shadow casts. The only noticeable difference is the troops and vehicles which lack shadows and that's fine for me as I don't like the way they've been done. Plus the performance increase without shadows is significant and fps never dipping during fights gives you an edge.

I can get better results OC'ing.

Get another identical 6600gt and an sli board.....runs sweet. But then again I also have a 4200 san diego and 4 gigs of RAM on xp-64

On a 6600 I wouldn't expect it to run well, I have a 6800GT in one of my machines and I cant run at full settings on that. 7800GTX np's at all but you get what you pay for as the saying goes.....
