Re: isnt there a way to join someone's single player game, on a lan?

Quit the bickering guys .. I've tried plenty of LAN'ing with BF2, and when some guy on a LAN starts up in single player, he really IS starting a server (it even says so on the screen) with bots. This is essentially a co-op server. You can join it via the LAN IP address of the single player "server".

What you all haven't taken into consideration, is what to do if you don't have internet access. Because the Connect via IP-button only works if you are using online accounts. If you use offline accounts (ie. singe player ones), you can't use this button.

For this purpose, I've so far used a little program called "Medic's BF2 Coop Emulator", which you run on the server along with BF2. It then broadcasts the BF2 server on the LAN, so other clients can see it in their local server browser. Pretty nifty, eh?

    Just FYI.

That will not change anything. "Coop mods" just change maps and maybe some weapons/vehicles. Co-op does not require any mod.

To play with no internet connection (assuming the 'join by ip' button in 'join local' doesn't work):
      1. Start a local server
      2. other player goes to 'join local' and should see the server in the browser BUT DON'T JOIN YET
      3. cancel the server and start the SP game
      4. other player now joins using the browser and will be in the SP game

There should be no port-forwarding needed if you're on the same LAN.

      Some more important co-op tips:
You can adjust the number of bots by editing ai\aidefault.ai in the folder of the mod you're running.
You can adjust the number of players on each team using sv.teamratiopercent in the console.

Good source of SP/co-op info at http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~bf42play...p?showforum=23 (BattlefieldSinglePlayer BF2 forum).

Re: isnt there a way to join someone's single player game, on a lan?

OK guys, I tried what many of you have said and NONE of it works!

First, I tried just setting up a single player game across my local network (I have to WinXP Pro PCs connected to my Linksys BEFSR41 DSL Router. SP2 firewall is turned off. My hardware firewall is on.

This didn't work. So I followed the directions at: http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm to forward my ports for BF2. There were a LOT it wanted me to forward. After that I could no longer connect to the internet, so on my other computer the other person couldn't login. Not a very good solution anyway...

So... I tried following jdrou's directions above, but when I start a LAN game the other computer can't see it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to get this going so my friend and I can practice flying with bots instead of ruining other peoples games (which so often happens to us).

        Thanks.

P.S. Where is the COOP mod people are talking about? I've looked around but don't see it anywhere.

Co-op mods are basically expanded maps for SP mode; not full 32- and 64-player maps like in MP but bigger than normal SP maps. A couple are from codebasher (Coop32) and Viathon (BF2SP64).

Can the client computers see the SP computer in the regular Windows network browser? Can they ping its ip address? Are you sure your address is 192.168.0.1? That is normally the address of the router on the local network. Try opening a command prompt window and typeing ipconfig to see your address.

I can use Windows Explorer to view and change files on each computer.

My address is not 192.168.0.1. I don't know where you got that info. My address is 192.168.1.101 for one machine and 192.168.1.100 for the other.

Sorry, that was the original poster's info. Are you sure when you start the local game that the other computer is using the local game browser and not the internet game browser? My DLink router didn't need any special setup to get that to work. Maybe yours has some port blocking between the local computers in addition to the internet. If you do have internet access, have you tried using an online account and joining the SP game by ip through the internet game browser?

Thanks for the help jdrou. I'm not sure what you mean by local game browser versus the internet game browser. Can you explain?

I may have some port blocking turned on. I'm not sure.

                Thanks again.

I don't have my BF2 computer handy but IIRC when you go to multiplayer there are 4 tabs: BFHQ, join internet, join local, start local server. The 'join local' only looks at your local network and doesn't access the internet. The 'join internet' only works if you are logged into an online account. It gets a list of servers from a master server but you can still join local games by ip.

Talus is exactly right, just for the record. I don't have anything to add, except to make sure you are entering the correct IP and make sure you turn off your Windows Firewall, which has already been mentioned.

Listen to this guy Talus, he knows what he's talking about!

Except that you should not need any port forwarding when the client(s) and server are on the same local network which is what maskzilla and whooster69 are trying to do.

whoster, are you sure you are starting a full-blown LAN server, or are you just starting a single-player game? Cause if the last one is the case, it wouldn't show up in the local server browser on the other machine (as per my post above). Just checking that there's no confusion.

Oh. OK. Now I know what you mean. Yes I was in the local server when I was trying a local game and it wouldn't show up.

Yep. I was starting a full blown LAN server. I just checked it again, and it still doesn't show up on the other computer.

Could this have something to do with my hardware firewall? I have Windows XP SP2's firewall off but definitely have the hardware firewall on...
