This flag is a must keep for the chinese team. Air, plus Arty. Oh yeah, ya just gotta keep resources here.
Does that mean once you own both assets your arty will be ready twice as fast? Hmmm, i'll have to go commander on this one once...

LOL, yes nub, they did. The test was referred to as "BF1942", and then "Desert Combat". Played this map a million times on those games.

If the US doesnt get active and take flags quickly on the island, then it can end up going the PLA's way easily. Used to be the same in 42', freaking zeros would be sinking the carrier while some nub would beach the destroyer in front of a gun enplacement, ensuring its demise as well lol.

USMC - get to the island, secure a flag, then take the airfield. Once the airfield is in the US hands its practically over..

Aircrafts are far too dominating since there's nothing to use against them except other aircrafts. Chinamen get better (more agile) jets so it's a bit unbalanced. The team that gets a good pilot up in the air faster, most likely wins the round. Stingers are still a joke and good machinegun target practice for jet pilots. You can't use them for AA purpose against jets. USS Essex aa guns are easy to avoid to so this opens new baserape option for 2 enemy jets. GG!

Actuslly, this is a VERY good map. The way the map is designed, it is a little diffcult to capture that initial flag. However, once that flag is captured, it should be relatively easy for a team that is working together to start making their way around the crescent shaped island.

The reason that this rarely happens is that most people are too focused on getting aircraft or choppers rather than the ground war that this map facilitates. Most teams just go off and try to play rambo rather than moving together as squads or entire teams around the island.

By moving from flag to flag starting at one end, and working as a team, you are basically forming an inpenetrable line that simply moves around the island. The air support should be pounding the troops and armor near the next flag that the team is approaching to remove much of the threat. As long as your commander is constantly spotting rogue enemy for you using the scan feature, this will ensure that no enemy end up sneaking behind you.

This, of course, would all be in a perfect world, which we don't live in. But I was on the American team last night and we had zero problem crushing the chinese forces into oblivion using a very rough version of this tactic. The match was over in no time.

OK. Very good response and many good thoughts here.

I decided to pay the map some more visit yesterday. I pilot choppers a lot and do that togehter with two or three friends on TS that have good controll over the gunnery position. If the chineese have a good chopper pilot and gunner it makes it allmost impossible for the BH to land troops on the island. If the Cobra pilot and gunner is not very good and can take the Havoc down with the video missile, the chineese pilot and gunner will have a field day and the USMC will have a hard time getting on the island.

i love Wake Island its really good.

As far as i can see its just like Karkand a real high point scoring map with intense infantry battles. Its slightly different too karkand though because its a lot more open and so more difficult to hide.

That can make it annoying trying too C4 tanks because its hard too get close enough. It seems a lot more dominated by the g3 and g36 people rather than the PKMers i like it :)

                  Re: Wake Island 2007 thoughts?

I though wake island is a great map. In other maps, if the squads and team were not working together, you would end up by yourself at a base and then get killed by someone sneaking up behind you. they would then capture that flag and you would have to spawn somewhere miles away from all the action.

then by the time you get back to the action areas, you get killed again!

Karkland is a good map as there are more close quaters fighting and more squad work, but still you can end up at a bass where there is no action.

In wake island i was constantly spawning at bases and finding myself defending the flag with either my squad members, or other team members. and we were all looking out for each other cause we knew that there would be some US troops trying to get our flag.

i played it 3 or 4 times last nite on the chinses side and have to say we lost all 3 or 4 games because the US were basically forming a wall and constantly closing in on us. but when we were down to just defening the airfield from either side, the infantry battles were just amazing. (well when the artillery was not pounding us)

think there needs to be some chinese boat ports though so that the squads can get from the left base to the right base without haveing to go on the land. this would also make things more interesting as the US could find them selves being attacked from two sides.

i don't think you want to ad stuff to it to make it even more in the chineses favour.

I love the new map but it is very weighted against the USMC team and for the PLA team.

I think it would be better if it started with a USMC base on the mainland.

                      Re: Wake Island 2007 thoughts?

nah it is much better for the US spawn point to be offshore. this means that for the US team to win the game they have to be creative and work together. could force individual players to start acting as a team for once!

i havnt been on the US team yet, but i look forward to getting into a helicopter and parachuting out with my squad over a flag!

i would also like to see a more farcry type island map in the game. but then again i would like to see a version of assualt in the game to.

I like Wake Island 2007, it's a fun map.. But who was the idiot that planted palmtrees in front fo the US AA-turret on that small spawn island?? The trees block your view towards the island, and to make it even worse they make you loose lock contstantly.. *BIG* mistake imho those trees, the AA-turret is now pretty useless (unless the Chinese capture & use it)..

First time I managed to play it yesterday and had a great time, I was US 3 rounds played and 2 won, think the balance is quite good.

Played this map first time 6/10/05 as USMC and got our butts kicked. Thought, this is too hard as USMC. Next round I went commander and boy did we kick ass!!

Its a good balanced map, once the USMC gets the first flag. After that, it DOES not matter what class you chose...you have something to do. Versus other default maps, where if you enjoy being a sniper, you wont be useful, enjoy being AT, again, not useful, etc...etc. Here, no matter what you pick, you can enjoy the map.
Another thing, that makes this map better then most default maps, are the spawn points, themselves. This map is a throwback map. My point is, less spawn points, = more fun. MOst BF2 default maps, have by far, way too many spawn points to make for a good, fun, fast paced FPS expierence.
Hopefully DICE can understand this. We dont want 10 spawn points. We WANT to be pushed together, to fight each other. I mean, hello, thats the game.

                                Re: Wake Island 2007 thoughts?

I love this map. Probably mostly nostalgia kicking in here form my '42 days...but the map goes over very well in BF2. EVERY game I have played thus far on it has been very close. I won a round the other night 1-0! I have never seen so much teamwork on BF2 as I do on this map. I'm curious to see what EA does with the survey data on the official BF2 website (the one asking where you'd like to see a map based...last I saw, USA was leading by far).

To the whiners about jets...you just need to learn how to move without them seeing you. Move quickly and shortly...this keeps them from seeing the tell-tale green box on your ass! Learn to move on foot rather than being lazy and needing to drive everywhere. If you don't know what I'm talking about, grab a jet, switch to bombs, and fly low over an active battlefield with vehicles and such. You'll see green boxes everywhere telling you where the bad guys are.

To the Stinger whiners...learn about AOA (angle of attack). A missle can't make a 90 degree turn (high AOA). It also can't bob-and-weave like a jet does. The reason being is the velocity of missles (Mach 2 or 3 typically...in real life). Get a chopper or jet to blow flares, re-lock-on and fire ONLY if you have a good angle. Do this and you'll kill left and right with the stingers. I did this before the patch and still do it afterwards...no problem at all.
