I really don't understand why ppl run into artillery.
I have fun running away from it. Trying to see if I can cap a flag before the enemy arty comes down.
If you hear "artillery, your position" you should look at your minimap and see where it is.
In fact theres lots of kills if you're near an arty strike cos ppl are too busy running away to shoot back

If I get tk'ed by arty then its my own fault for not running far enough away (that only happened once when I got hit by the last arty explosion).
I definitely DON'T punish if I get tk'ed by arty. You get a warning and you hear the arty being fired - what more do you need???

        Re: Whats the point?

I enjoy the Commander role, just needs to be scaled back a little bit but not exactly sure how. As no one has been playing this role in the last few matches I have been involved with, I have enjoyed learning how to be more effective in this role. Given my poor stats, I have earned 4-5 awards and improved my K/D. Certainly has been a morale booster for this newbie.

Anyway, how exactly do you guys warn your mates of an incoming artillery strike? Text messages or voice comms? I haven't manage to see any easy way to do this. Shouldn't it be in the "right-click menu"? I certainly hope they add this in the patch. Gee, hope I didn't miss it.

As for TKs, I certainly understand your thoughts, but if there were no penalty it would become too powerful in that you could have a ton of folks on both teams in a concentrated location and strike it over and over without any worry. As it is now, a good commander is hopefully going to hesitate and plan his strikes with his mates in mind, especially if he values his own stats.

        Regards

I find the best way to get people away, appart from the standard arty symbol on the map and the "arty in your pos" warning given by default is just to say to SL that there is arty and type it in the team chat.. it gives you long enough as the attack takes a while to start. But yea that would be good.. just right click.. then bang.. out goes msn to your team.. way easier than tytping itall the time.

Basically if you dont want to TK anyone with arty either only drop arty way away from your team, which is kinda pointless or dont use it at all cause you will almost always TK someone with it. At the same time though, you arent helping the guys on the ground any by TKing them. Sigh, i freaking HATE lame FF. All it does it cause problems and i have to listen to people bitch about being TKed or being punished for TKing someone. Easy solution is to just turn the crap off. Just for the record, i punish for every single TK. People get made at me for punishing them, well i HATE being TKed. I very very rarely TK anyone so i dont put up with it. If you are gettin tired of being punished, complain to EA and get them to turn the damn FF off and everyone will be happy, and you can use the arty with no worries.
If you punish for every TK then your a moron.

You can warn squads (squad leader) by right-click on squad and select 'Move Artillery'. You can use VoIP to tell your squad leaders the same, but as much as I know only way to warn everyone in your team is to send Team Message (bottom left button). I am afraid you have to type something like 'ARTILLERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!MOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!'. There is no other easy way to do it. Just type it one or two times and hope for best

In any case I would love to have ability to warn all people in the team by pressing one button. Click and everyone hear 'Artillery Incoming'. I really love to play commander but number of people who are not listening or looking for artillery sign is ridiculously high.

Yes, the number of people that just keep on running towards the arty, and the decide to stop and look around wondering what is making all these explasions around them. Its so annoying, there has to be some way to help restrict this.. maybe if you get killed more the 2 times per round you get -5 points for being annoying and silly. :P

                    Re: Whats the point?

I dont punish for Commander dropping artillery, however sometimes I am allready there, surrounded by the other team and trying to kill them when it lands... I still dont punish if I am killed but i do wish sometimes the commander would take a bit more discretion in his firing of the artillery.

Too often I see the artillery pattern fall on the map and it encompasses as many blue dots as it does red dots.... what is he thinking at that point? That everyone will turn and run? Sometimes the message scrolls to fast on the side, sometimes people are too busy to keep an eye on the map, and sometimes my selective hearing pops in and I miss the Arty in your area call.

I hate the fact that sometimes my staying in an area causes the TK, but I have been able to ride out an arty strike in the past , but very rarely been able to get out of an area that is full of the OPFOR.

                      Re: Whats the point?

I usually also try to give a warning before i drop the arty For example ill say "arty at "place" in 1 minute." then if i have time "arty at "place" in 30 seconds" i find this helps, it just gives people that extra bit of time to get outta there. But as ive said before is that some people just keep running into it, then wonder why there are aryt shells falling around them an punish the commander when they die.

When I drop artillary I always warn them and tell them to check their maps. If I see the dumbass still running towards the barrage I warn them again. I used to like being a commander but not so much nowadays...
any decent commander would know that artillery is a last resort option intended for opportunities where YOU KNOW that there are no friendlies around -- otherwise you make SH!TLOADS of points actually COMMANDING -- meaning always keep your troops resupplies and in the know of their positions relative to the enemy -- thats what being a commander is all about and not trying to get points by trying to arty every red dot (and by the way thats the reason you dont even get points for kills while being commander)

                          Re: Whats the point?

Really, all it takes is practice. I RARELY get TKs as commander now and I get around 1/6 of the tickets in kills. I have gotten up to 1/4 of the tickets in kills as well. Most of the time, I won't get ANY TKs on a map, but if it is late night, I will get a little cocky and make mistakes. :)

I also have found that now LESS people punish than a month ago. . . but maybe it is because I make less mistakes with the arty.

It really isn't that hard not to get TK. But, sometimes, it requires spamming the comm channels. . . but people get the point.

                          DezemoDova,
I disagree. I arty all the time in an attempt to get the opposing teams tickets down, thus helping my team win. I also do a lot of actually commanding and supplying and all that, but arty is not a last resort at all, it can be used to creat a great advantage. I had 45 kills with it on one round, we won by 5 tickets. . .so if I hadn't been artying like mad, we would have lost.

thats true you do have a point -- i just try to avoid using it for the sole reason of not killing noob teammates -- but whenever i get a chance to drop it drops -- but sometimes you get screwed either way -- for example last night playing Dragon Valley and decent squad I was commanding was under heavy fire and requested a barrage so i give it to them they all escaped alive except for two unsquadded lone-wolf spec ops pfc's wandered into it like a bunch of morons -- and guess what two TKs and punishes -- thus the reason why i have my reservations about using it ALL the time

I don't just arty a position irresponsibly. In fact if an soldier is right there I will not drop artillary. If he is cut off and surrounded I still wait for him to either escape or die before I put the arty stamp on the map. Problem is that by the time I've stamped and 2 seconds from raining missles the soldier has respawned and headed back to the same position.

If anyone in this board has been under my command they know that I stick to the uncappable base in the prone position and don't leave unless theres a special ops getting ready to take down satellite or UAV.
