The Abrams shouldn't even be 2nd, the Tiger owns it on the fear factor.
Wow....you sound bitter....is it because the British tank didn't win? I think everyone can tell it wasn't what the best tank is currently in production. There wouldn't have been a Tiger, T-34, WW1 Tank etc. if it was.

I'm really surprised, that M1 is that high in that list as at least Centurion II and Leopard 2A6 are as good as that M1. At least at the paper, but I really think the training of those killing machines' crew are the main thing.

Other thing that bothers me is weak ranking of Merkava. Merkava III is most likely the most modern tank in that list and is purely capable of kicking ass of any single tank on that list.

No, because I went to school DURING the Cold War.

t34 has explosive armor thats why shells bounce off
The shells bounce off because of the angle of the armor.

I was always under the impression that the british challenger 2 was comparable to the abrams:

A little surpised to not see it listed...

Yeah, exactly, they have to be proven, and the m1A2!! remember the A2 part people, decimated the iraqis with an unimaginable kill to loss ratio. Also, it can fire accurately traveling at full speed in a thunderstorm at night while going over rough terrain. Its also very reliable as the loader is human and not some machine that can break down in an infinite number of ways. Also, the A2 has VERY good armor. For all the european tanks excluding the challenger, it doesnt even matter, they will never be on the list as they will never see the light of battle.

I wanna see the top 10 fighers so all you guys can bitch how the f22 is on the top and argue that stealth doesnt do anything

                          Re: Top 10 Tanks

ok, to the guy who said something about the WW1 tank (the Mark I-V tanks) dude, it was sheer terror, it was better than everything at the time, or else why is the T-34 in first, and why not the French Leclerc or UK Challenger 2 etc. Anyways, getting to there, the T-72 was supposed to be a GREAT tank, but actual combat experience showed differently, it was highly overrated, i mighta put on teh T-90 though. Anyways, Challenger 2, it's equal to the Leclerc and Abrams etc., but the problem is not even 400 have been produced, the M1 has over 1000 in numbers hmm 1000:400 ratio, who will win, if the tanks are exactly the same. Plus, the M1 has better electronics technology than the other two, it can distinguish friend from foe easily, and that's not by just sight, the computer analyzes it. Anyways, the only reason that they didn't put the russian tanks on there (like T-90) is because it was all classified, since when did russia let us read their top secret tank blueprints, i mean the T-54/55 is old, everybody knows it's clearly inferior to many tanks. Anyways, i can't see how the leclerc or Challenger 2 would be better than the M1, the Challanger 2 uses the same armor, but has rifled instead of smoothbore barrel, both guns can destroy any modern tank that is known to the allies (russia is developing new ERA that can supposedly take a lot of the power away from even APFSDS as well as Heat rounds, so we don't know) . And for the top ten fighters thing, i can remember quite little, but the F-22 was in last, and the F15 was in second, just like in top ten tanks, except the P-51 was probably the best fighter for it's time in the world, so it got 1st place. top ten on assault rifles and other firearms would be my dream, even though everybody knows the AK47 would win because it was such a jump from other weapons.

Most people on this thread are judging based on a T.V. Program. I'd like to point out the media is not neccessarily correct. If you read closely into the research documents present for the tank comparisons you'd realize the U.S M1 is vastly superior, but not by its sheer firepower, or armour alone. You must realize the U.S is one of the world superior dominate countries in fields of science accompanied by a neighbouring country such as Canada, which was once the leader of the aerospace engineering and long range weapontry divisions.

The U.S simply has better technology for accounting for the shell-drop deviation as well as better targetting systems then most tanks. The only tanks that can top the M1 is tanks in which their name is publicly available, however, all information is kept classified by their respective governments.

I'm a yank too, but this just isn't ture, there are a limited number of tanks out there that might be able to take down an abrams. The Challenger 2 is the only one that comes to mind, too lazy to do any research. :p

                                Re: Top 10 Tanks

The M1 Series tank is a good tank. Wont say it is better or worse than out allies MBTs (As I have not gone against any of them). One reason the Leopard and the Leclerc, and others did not make the list was simply ## Produced. I do not recall the details that were mentioned on the show as I saw it well over 2 months ago, but that played a huge factoe in this competetion.

If I am not mistaken there are less than a few hundred leopards (Please correct me if I am wrong as I am not stating this out of number bashing, but simply out of ignorance on the numbers) And there are less than 100 LeClercs (Again I am trying to remember the number stated)

As a Cav Troop Commander, I, took 9 M1A2's to Iraq (Along with 13 M3A3s, and 2 M1064s) The M1 is awsome... and also suffers from exactly what the show stated.... Our fuel consumption is incredible. I think the quote from the show "It is like fighting with one foot in a bucket". Destroy my fuel.... you've destroyed my tanks.

One quote from the show (Again this is from memory) wasnt about the M1 not facing a valid threat vehicle (T-72s) it was more of a not fighting a valid Army (Iraqi Army) that manned the tanks.

The history channel, a while ago, also had a different show that compared the modern MBTs on different factors... and If I recall correctly there was a 3 way tie for 1st.

The unfortunate things about trying to have a civil discussion about stuff like this are the tools that imediately turn it into a nation bashing thread that distracts from the topic.

In reality one factor that they didnt take into consideration was adaptability to it's intended theater of Operation or how it is to be used. The Merkava was designed Excelently for it's thater of operation. The Korean K1A1, I personally think is a piece of junk, but it's hydraulic lifts make it really effective in it's intended theater. Just because an M1 can go 40+ MPH... That is not allways a good thing. Same with anyother tank. The crew compartment and the Mortar on the Merkava are ideal for it's use/need, but a detrement to what the US Army wanted at the time.

The scale used will obviously never please everyone. And despite working with the M1 every day.... I still think there are others that deserved to be higher... and none of them are modern day MBTs.

And for those that have argued what can/cant kill an M1. Lots of things can kill an M1. To include several Fratricides we had where an M3A2 (Bradley) killed one. (Penetrated the armor and destroyed the engine (All the creww survived) There is no such thing as an Imprenetrable tank... just a series of more difficult.
