Just out of interest when you start up your pc and the black screen comes up hit the Pause button on your keyboard and take note of the version of the Asus you are running and check it against this info..hit pause again to continue running your pc.

Your bios v should be .. 1013 your firmware should be Awdflash BIOS update tool V8.24B to update your bios

Edit like i said you are using MSI bios not Asus if it is an Asus Mobo?

I have athlon 64 3400+, 1 gig RAM and ATI Radeon 9800pro(with arctic cooling)..

..I cannot get good fps with any settings on high really at 1024x768@75hz, I just have all settings on medium (maybe one on high). I think you may be expecting a bit much from your graphics card, and it may be overheating. My graphics card would crash within 5 mins of play until i bought a cooler for it.

Again your just confusing him IT IS AN HP MACHINE!!! and it using an HP BIOS! he has a Propriety MoBo AND a Propriety BIOS

There is NOTHIN wrong with the RAM it is function FINE in Dual channel this Mobo only supports up to PC2700 yes fine but the RAM will adjust itself accordingly(it has)
IF you wanna try tackling a BIOS update HERE is where you need to go and yes there is a an update there and very clear instructions on how to do it

try updating punkbuster manually, bf2 takes so much memory (specially on high) that it sometimes ignores background programs's request nd such (so i've heard) so it constantly punkbuster might be trying to update causing those little lag spikes...
got to punkbuster.com download their pbweb put it on ur bf2 folder and let it rip it should itself from there on

look at my specs, u think i can run at all high, and its better than urs, i tried running on high and it lagged like a beotch, just settle with medium, it basically the same as high, look at tweakguides.com, and look for bf2, they show the diff b/w high and med, there is no diff, cept' for the ground looks a little more detailed.

also to find ram, go to http://www.pny.com/configurator/ and it will tell u what ram is compatiable with ur computer.

looking at up specs, ur comp is not that good at all. a 2800+ is not good, and plus to run this gam at med, with no lag u will need 1 gig of ram, plus i dont know that much about ati cards, but i heard that a x800 is as good as a 6800 gt, then a 9800 must suck.

dude, you have a damn 7800GTX, you SHOULD BE ABLE TO RUN IT MAXED OUT AT THE HIGHEST RES AT OVER 60FPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW, right now I'm running it on medium with almost no load pauses and a good 30-50FPS. ANd thats with just 512NB of RAM. I shouldAlso mention I have AF at 16X. I can't stand the ground getting blurry from 2ft. BTW, check Gamespots "near Final Hands on preview" of BF2, they ran it at all settings on HIGH(No AF or AA) with a 9800pro, 3GHz, gig of RAM.

get another 512 ram or put your texture to medium.
increase agp apperture.
