    Re: 30-50FPs??

I just tried checking task manager while playing for cpu usage and it was at 100%. I det the priority of bf2.exe abovenormal and my cpu ussage dropped to 10% til the game started then it jumped to around 70%-100% without complete 100% ussage!!! I would try it out and see what you get.

Just to clear up some misconceptions...

First, your CPU usage should be at 100% while the game is running.

The second thing, make sure the PCI latency timer is set to 64 and not 32. This will allow your sound card and other items on the PCI bus to hold onto the interrupt request longer thereby smoothing out gameplay some.

Your AGP aperature size is simply a block of RAM dedicated to holding texture memory. Some say 256MB has helped them but 128 MB is standard fare.

          you are not right,
the lower the pci latency the better performance you get, for myself I have better performance with 32 than with 64

for cpu usage, also not right.. my second pc which is nearly the same.. only slightly difference has not 100% cpu usage (we are talking abou the menu!!!)..

That would really depend on the rest of the hardware in your system. ATI Catalyst drivers, when they are installed they set PCI latency to 248/255 and thus overrides any BIOS settings you might have.
This means that takes more PCI resources aways from other hardware, and can make soundcard have too little resouces or time and it produces these little skips/stutter in games.

If you then set it gfx card to 32, and you have other piece of hardware with higher priority than 32 and it is a vital piece of hardware that takes a lot of resources then it will just hog the time. That is why you have to look at it differently on each system, e.g. if soundcard is 64 I would set it gfx card to 64, if soundcard was 32 I would set it to 32, or just so one isn't more important than the other.

One thing I noticed, many ppl have stated that Omegadrivers fixed their graphics stuttering in BF2, and I think I know why. Omegadrivers, don't override the PCI latency settings like regular Catalyst do, and thus no PCI Latency tool is needed if one is using the Omegadrivers.

              Re: 30-50FPs??

for the latency, the audigy is set to 32 as standard, so I enforced all my other cards/chips to use 32 too..

and for the drivers, it depends on the bios the card uses, I recently updated the graphic bios and the default latency changed form 32 to 255.. you might have a point there.. will undo the bios update and report back and use internal latency settings

My cpu usage is always at 100% when i'm playing. But i can still run teamspeak, and windows media player, and still get 80-90fps. What's up with that?

You got to have a PCI or AGP card, not PCI-Express.

You can set it in BIOS, and if drivers don't override them it should be fine. Many drivers do though.

                    Or use this tool: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=951

read and follow instructions at link or in short do this:

Uzip to a folder, where the files won't be moved later, if you move the folder the settings won't be applied at startup again.

To set PCI Latency for gfx, find the primary video card in list. Right-click and Change Setting(s), set it to e.g. 64 or 32. Then go to menu press Apply, then Save, then Apply on StartUp.

It is a good idea to ahve the video and sound card to similar values or close, don't mess with other hardware as it probably isn't needed, only sound and gfx card.

                      Re: 30-50FPs??

Some general comments about the PCI Latency Timer.

The PCI Latency timer in the BIOS simply acts as a traffic cop for the PCI Bus. Every thing except the memory must travel on this Bus. A setting of 32 will allow a PCI device, including the AGP Bus, to hold or have the attention of the CPU for 32 clock cycles before its resources are released by the CPU.

The CPU must in turn grant permission for the next PCI device to commumicate with the CPU for a total of 32 clocks before interruption. Then the next device can have the bus and attention of the CPU for the next 32 clock cycle before being forced out of the instruction pool. This repeats and the competition for the bus and the CPU is fierce.

In most cases, 32 cycles is too short for a sound card or hard drive to complete its request. The result is that the CPU will have to turn its attention to some other device after 32 cycles and come back to finish the instructions originally requested by the sound card. Then repeat for each device. This is very ineffecient. The same is true about the video card because even AGP systems ride on the PCI bus.

Therefore, in practice - aside from the wisdom shared by Gunny Highway - a setting of 64 is optimal for MOST systems. 128 cycles can be a bit excessive because it may hold the bus longer than many of the devices need it to, thereby wasting CPU cycles that could be addressing another device. This would have to effect of making the sound card or harddrive wait at a traffic light when no one is comming the other way.

The bottom line is that each system must be tweaked for its specific components and for the applications it runs most. In my case, this is a gaming rig so I have it configured as such.

ok retested with standard and 64 latency and have to say, 32 on everything gives the best performance here

bf2 just needs more juice, it is a more demanding game. It takes a lot of processor and ram to keep track of 64 people and all those bullets and planes and bombs and tanks and grenades and......

Ok well i'm at work right now but I'll change mine back to 64 when I get home.

In theory though would you expect my system to be able to handle high settings?

I shall go home and begin the tweaking adventure.

just run at default res 1028x768 and suck it up until you can get another gig of ram. the main problem and people don't realize is it memory corruption which is why people get all kinds of crazy erros with this game. this game is super memory intensive so if you have your pc OCed bf2 might now like it.
