    Any jet dogfighting tips/tricks?

OK, so since I couldn't find an appropriate forum to ask this question, I figured general would suite the question best.

First off, I fly with a joystick, making my helicopter flights more than enjoyable. I'm pretty damn good at dogfighting and holding my own without too many deaths in any helicopter.

However, when it comes to dogfighting in a jet, I either freak out and crash into the ground, or smack straight into an enemy or friendly vehicle.

Is there anyone that could possibly give me hints on how they dogfight, get out of missile locks, out-maneuver other pilots, etc. When I'm stuck without a helicopter, and my only resource other than being infantry (which I don't mind, obviously), I'd like to help my team out with a jet and I just can't seem to do it.

If I switch to the bombs, I'm decent, but nothing as deadly as bombing with the MIG in BF: Vietnam. :)

I have seen some excellent pilots out there, and I figure most of it has to do with practicing, but I also know that some of these fookers can pull stuff off like drop down to 2mph and just wait out and then use their afterburners and un-realistically skim off the ground to safety, taking out several enemies before they go for a re-fuel.

As is, if there are no other "birds" in the sky, I'm not too bad, but as soon as I'm locked on, I do stupid things which end with me being at the respawn screen.

    Can anyone help?

    Much appreciated in advance, thanks!!!!

    PEACE

When and if you get on an enemy jets ass switch to bombing mode so they don'y know u are there then try to take them down wit hthe main guns. or if he slows up swicth to rockets quickly and blast him.

most of the really decent pilots aren't going to say much in here about what they do. for the most part, there are a few basic things that i have never seen anyone post in here and it almost suprises me cuz of the amount of replies people like to post. not that i am going to give most of that stuff away either lol.

for the most part, just keep flying as often as possible and take mental notes of what you see people doing to evade you and then learn to use that for yourself. remember what works more often than not, and scrap the **** that hasn't worked that often. dont get into bad habits, like flying in circles when someone is on your ass, it will only lead to you getting boned hard when you fly against a very good pilot.

fly very eradicaly after u have made a bombing run go on afterburners(easier to track) or dont go(othere hotter heat-they die). Once u bomb, fly as iradicaly as posiible loops, half, swivel loops what ever you want, then go as high as possible make sure no ones on your tail and search for a air target or rearm. I find that flying all over the dam place eaither makes the enemy missle go somewhere else or the pilot crashes or he looses me then i swoop all the way up and search for a target.

Ok, since i consider myself as a better pilot than 90% of the people who play BF2, here's my tips (don't worry, i'm not lying, i just played a lot of flight simulators). Anyways, a nice manuver is the Barrel roll, you put your joystick to one of the bottom corners while flying straight, does wonders for missile locks. And also, don't release your flares until you get a solid tone on you, or else you're wasting your flares. And when dogfighting, if you are going in with missiles, after you lock on, wait until he drops his flares, then go in and make the kill. And if they get a solid tone on you that you can't get outta, just start turnin in circles, even if they can keep a lock, the missiles can't hit because they nerfed the missiles too much in BF2. A great fighter is a J-10, try using it on Dalian, it's quite easy to shoot down JSFs and helis. Also, if you see a fighter while you're in a bomber, run for your life, he'll shoot you down in notime, they are more manuverable than you, so don't try doing anything i told you except dropping flares, trying to outturn him won't work, he could turn in a much smaller circle.

            I got a tip:

If I'm in a jet for the other team. Don't fly. I'm your worst nightmare in the skies.

Don't ever use thrust unless you're in a dogfight or the place you need to reach is at utmost emergency (i.e: Flag is being capped by your enemy).

All I got to say when trying to ditch an enemy jet on your tail, use the afterburners on to make a sharp turn and then make another sharp turn which will throw off the jet for a few seconds hopefully if you do it right, letting you get behind him.

can anyone tell me how to up the sensitivity of the joystick? Is this an in-game setting or a harware setting? I have a Logitech something or other...its a few years old...

as aid before barrel rolls. but also loopings, half loopings, corkscrews, flying under bridges or near buildings. Does take a lot of practice but if you get it right youll be the guy who is chasing the other.

                          Re: Any jet dogfighting tips/tricks?

Keep the target toward the bottom of your target graticule. Always think the shortest distance to target. The missile come form under your craft so if the target is above you then it has to travel a longer distance, which is bad could go after other targets.

Also keep them targeted until they release their flares and wait until the flares die.

Place shortcut keys that you will need and use like different views, weapons select, countermeasures, and afterburner in a manner that is easy to use and close together.

Learn the stall altitudes can be useful to get away from a better pilot or jet. Corkscrew until you get to a stall and cut your jet to zero power, fall until you regain control and return power.

The higher the angel of attack is for bombing runs the tighter the bomb grouping is going to be and more predictable, but harder to pull out of.

Finally practice and remember that their are better pilots out there to shot down :)

                            Re: Any jet dogfighting tips/tricks?

                            Thanks all...

As I mentioned, I'm not too shabby on bombing runs, it takes me a couple tries. As for the conceited reply about not being in the skies when you are, well, if I'm in my helicopter, 95% of the time, I never get killed by a jet unless they decide to run into me...which seems to be most pilot tactics.

If I'm getting locked on more than twice every 40secs, I normally ask my buddy dark-zero to fly the birds, and as much as he loves being infantry, I've yet to see one person actually take him down before he gets at least 10-15kills...quite amazing actually.

I guess it'll come with practice, but as most of you already know, as it has always been, it's a race without a winner to the jets/attack helis.

I agree with some of you not divulging your pilot tricks, so that shows me one of two things: you're either a conceited pilot that's really not that good, or that you cannot explain yourself in text on how to fly, as it is with my helicopter skills. I can show my buddies "how" to fly, but I normally make them follow me with another heli and I make them perform crazy maneuvers before showing them how to fight in mid air.

I'm going to re-open my test server and install the bots mod and test it out that way with my buddy, he's an ace and uses the same joystick as me...hopefully by the time I meet any of you in the sky, I'll be able to take you on!! :)

So, I figure most of you that wrote back, don't want to give any tips on what I had mentioned previously: when a jet slows down to a crawl, so slow that it's almost standing still, and get out of it with afterburners...this seems to be the best tactic for hitting helis and other jets, I just can't seem to get it down to a science. Oh well.

One more thing I've noticed, how the hell do pilots hit infantry with those guns? I'll see a SU-30 make a run over the airstrip and gun down like 6 guys without dropping a single bomb. Are the bullets that straight and powerful?

                            Thanks again all

                              Re: Any jet dogfighting tips/tricks?

I don't divulge secrets on the basis of being a concieted unskilled pilot, I do it because it only makes my life harder in the air when everyone knows what I am doing and how to do the things that I know. After sharing air duty with akaNE in my clan for matches for almost three years of DC/BF2 on CAL and NATO, it's better to keep some things to myself. It's the same reason I have not shown my 'tank vs tank 1 shot kill' video to anyone outside my clan, it would suck to have someone in a match on the other team that knew how and why it works and were you can place your shots.

There are some very basic things (at least I consider them to be basic) that I don't see people posting in here, and I am just amazed that nobody has put it up. Honestly.

Alot of people are going to throw text book moves at you for advice, it's fine and dandy, but you need to improvise as much as possible. For instance, take the Split S, it's a half twist - half loop -half twist - half loop. You don't have to do the half twist, you can do a quarter twist or whatever, text book is just a guideline. This is videogame land, you can do whatever the hell you want in a jet, twist and bend that plane as much as possible. Hell, make your own moves, I did lol.

People can explain things to you til their blue in the face, but they can't teach you when is the right time and circumstances for some moves. I learned the same way, nobody taught me, I just kept getting back on the horse. I learned what was a waste of time to do and made sure never to do it again. I always took notes when I ran into a better pilot in CAL matches and would visualize the **** in my head after the match when I was laying in bed and picture myself doing the same **** they did to me to get out of a sticky situation.

Here is my last piece of advice that is more common sense than anything. Don't always go on the side of the map with the best jet. Take the ****ty jet once in a while and make it hard on yourself, your only be as good as your competition, and if your taking the jet that gives you the biggest advantage, you'll tactics will be a shortfall when you have no choice but to use the worst jet and the things you expect it to do are not happening because you are not in the ride you are used to being in. I did this all the time in DC, I'd have flying scrims with my wingman akaNE in CB4 and I would take the F16 (****tiest jet in that game) and fly against him as he used the Mirage (best jet in that game). When we hit the pubs afterwards and I took a MiG29 or Mirage, I had a great time.

Yes, the maingun on the jets kick ass, the splash damage on them is awesome for strafing flags.
