Yeah, i don't really care too much about British Army weapons, but in BF2, it's a damn good sniper replacement for medium-long ranges.

      DAMAGE
Hmm. This is where things go to pieces, so to speak. In BF2, the L85 seems woefully underpowered when compared to the M16. In theory, it should do the same damage as the M16, as they both fire identically the same round (5.56mm NATO). (In fact, for fact buffs, both rifles use the same magazine, so if you see an M16 clip, you can use it in the L85…in real life of course.)
A 5.56 mm NATO round fired from any rifle should do the same damage, as they are identical in everyway, including the amount of explosive in the round to propel the bullet. So the M16 and L85 should have an equal amount of stopping power, but for balance issues, this has been changed.
funny, becuase the bullets out of the L85 have a damage rate in BF2 of 32 , and the M16 has a damage rato of 30 , so the L85 is actualy just a bit more powerfull then the M16.

Big diference is the recoil after each shot, this is bigger then with the M16 , and this is the reason why it seems to be less powerfull, you actualy miss a lot of shots with the L85 in burst.

But in one shot, the L85 will kill more and faster then the M16

The SAS don't use the rifle as they need a Sub Machine Gun, as many of their missions are up close and personal to the enemy, and they need a gun that can be silenced - something the MP5 can do perfectly.
Not really. I think youve got a somewhat romantised (iranian embassy)view of them to be honest. They could just as well be carrying an M16(not an SA80) or GPMG depending upon their task. An MP5 isnt go to be much good in wide open spaces on a recce or OP in a non-urban enviroment. Do some more research and i can assure you their armoury extends to a much bigger range than mere sub machine guns.

Didnt know that we chose the SLR over the M16 due to ethics though, we're such gentlemen.

One thing I love about the SA85 is I always know when I am being shot by one. It's usually a hail of lead coming at me from miles away. Knowing that it rarely kills quickly at that range I can usually take cover and heal up to return fire.

I've had some awsome battles fighting enemy medics, firing back and forth across the length of Kubra Damn. Unless you get a head hit at that range the battles can take a while with each player falling back to heal.

Awesome thread Fu11Force. I will think about this thread when I use the L85.

good points, i have got some stupid ideas when it comes to the SAS. It all depends on the task requirements... silly me. I just can't imagine the SAS using the m16...what traitors!

yeah we chose to have semi auto, but then we failed to notice the 7.62mm round...that is absolutely lethal!

Well i disagree with all the L85A2 bashing, yes the L85A1 sucked, but the new weapon after being overhauled my H&K looks to be a huge improvement and in several sites I have found it is classified as the best assault rifle in the world. And apparentely when put up against the M16, M4, AK47, AN-94, G36, it was the most accurate even without the sites and provided the fastest reload times. The only test it couldnt win was against the ak47 for terrain reliability which is understandable.

                    Great observations Fu11Force

I chose the L85 as my first unlock and I don't regret it.

in game it's awesome however the real thing is not as impressive.I all so spent three years with it. And have still got the burn marks on my check from the melting but pad.(base in hong Kong melted with the insect repellent ) I still prefer the S.L.R. now that is a weapon and a half and when you know one or to tricks you can make that fully auto

Well, yeah, it has a SUSAT scope and even in the BFHQ it says Britain had to remake accuracy tests for it. The A2 model isn't too bad, the A1 just sucked as you said, by just putting on can creme or insect repellent it made it melt. But i see the A2 solved most of the problems. ANd AK beating it in reliablity is just like a fact, the AK47 cn be dipped in mud for like an hour, runit over with a truck, and put it under water and still fire, it fires underwater, so taht's cool.

Re: The L85A1 - Real vs Virtual

L85/SA 80 is by far my favourite weapon, I am ex-armed forces myself and regularly used the trusty bull pup for my duties. I was actually rather surprised that they didn't use the British Army's Light Support Weapon as the first choice for the alternative weapon for the Support soldiers but I suppose that's another story. Maybe the DCX boys will eventually make us a mod with all the British weapons in there to play with like they did for us with 1942(hint hint)...

I have to say to whoever started the thread that your comments are bang on. I have similar issues with the damage rating on this weapon and agree with you about the M16. It seems as though what they have done to confuse us is given the M16 a higher damage rating so it more in line with it's 7.62mm counterpart the AK47, this make sense in terms of game play because it keeps the Assault Soldiers quite balanced. But as regards to the L85 in game I think personally its spot on. It maybe would have been nice to see the Assault variant type with the grenade launcher.

Here are a few little factoids that I have come across about the 5.56mm and 7.62mm I hope you find them helpful.

The NATO 5.56mm round is a very small round in comparison. It was decided years ago that the 7.62mm round would be phased out of service in the British armed force and similarly with the US Forces. I believe it was something to do with the way the round broke up when entering the target and the fact that is sometimes got lodged inside the target causing serious damage and complications if the target had not been dealt a kill shot. NATO considered it to be in humane so their policy was changed and the 5.56mm adopted.

So the 5.56mm was born and adoptable by both forces. The round is a lot smaller and more accurate because of this. And also it more likely to stay in one piece when entering the target and nice times out of ten it will pass straight through without causing serious long lasting damage. However it remains to be said that Non NATO countries such as Russia and China aren't bound by NATO Policy and continue to use the 7.62mm ammunition.

S.L.R !!?? talk about OLD SKOOL.

Didn't you find the S.L.R about bit on the bulky side. I mean it's each to their own at the end of the day. But myself I find the L85A1 more compact unit which for a small guy like me is perfect.. the S.L.R was far to long and heavy unless of course you are built like Jeff Capes.

What I would say about the L85A1 and I would love to hear you views on it. Is about the reliability of the weapon. I personally haven't had a single days problem with the newer varient of the L85A1 sometimes when they are really dirty or the barrel is hot they do require handling with care. But if you take care of them, they take care of you.

I also read a comment which ammused me about the SUSAT giving a soldier a black eye.. are you sure it wasn't his oppo's have fun with some parade gloss.lol If this were to happen you would only allow it to happen once as you can adjust were the SUSAT is seated, moving it forward and backwards.

It doesn't jam enough in the game, which means it is so unrealistic. Perhaps it is based on the A2, but they put the A1 name on it. Although it does have the skin of the A1, with the crappy round cocking handle, rather than the newer ergonomically designed ones on the A2. And yes I have used both.
