In this post, I hope to compare the L85A1 in Battlefield 2 against the L85A1 in real life. This post is a serious discussion on how well the BF2 team put the L85 into the game. This is not a whiney post or moaning. If you ask why did I do this...well, i'm bored and I love the L85 (it's the standard weapon of the British Army...and it rocks)
I apologise for the really low quality screenshots, my pc is so crappy, BF2 is on the lowest settings.

Note: I don't know why the BF2 team chose the L85A1, as this is several years old and has been replaced by the updated L85A2, which is almost identical apart from the name and some changes with the cocking bolt, and other minor changes that fixed some of the problems with the L85A1.
Stats of the L85 in real life:
Caliber: 5.56 NATO (.223rem)
Action: Gas operated, rotating bolt
Overall length: 780 mm
Barrel length: 518 mm
Weight: 4.13 kg (with SUSAT optical sight and no magazine); 5 kg with SUSAT and loaded with magazine with 30 rounds of ammunition
Magazine capacity: 30 rounds
Rate of fire: 650 rounds per minute
Effective range: about 500 meters (with SUSAT sights)
Many of those stats above may mean nothing to you, and don't matter in BF2, such as weight and size.
SUSAT Sight
This sight is one of the most recognisable parts of the rifle, and something you will immediately notice when using it in BF2.

In BF2, the sight is virtually identical to the real life version.
The wide aperture (how much you can see in the sight) is excellent for finding your next target, good zoom capabilities, and the little hole in the sight that lets you see things that would normally be hidden if it wasn’t there, are all in the BF2 version.
The SUSAT sight is an excellent part of the rifle, and this is fully reflected in the game, enabling you to accurately kill targets that you wouldn’t be able to hit with the standard AK47, AK-101 or M16.
ACCURACY
The accuracy of this rifle is very high, and targets can be hit up to 500m away accurately. In BF2 this is also true, although for balance and the size of levels, 500m shots are rare. But up to 200m, this rifle is superb, and if you prone, and take your time, the target won’t know what hit him.
DAMAGE
Hmm. This is where things go to pieces, so to speak. In BF2, the L85 seems woefully underpowered when compared to the M16. In theory, it should do the same damage as the M16, as they both fire identically the same round (5.56mm NATO). (In fact, for fact buffs, both rifles use the same magazine, so if you see an M16 clip, you can use it in the L85…in real life of course.)
A 5.56 mm NATO round fired from any rifle should do the same damage, as they are identical in everyway, including the amount of explosive in the round to propel the bullet. So the M16 and L85 should have an equal amount of stopping power, but for balance issues, this has been changed.
That’s just my thoughts, what are yours? If you lot like this, I might do some more Real vs Virtual analyses, but I mainly did this because of my pure and undying love for the L85…
