Yes it is possible to escape the base occasionally but what a pain it is to have that as the sole focus of your game! IMHO you should then with any team members make the raper your principal quarry for the rest of the game.

It's a shame that some players abuse the game design (of course there are genuine mismatches in teams which make domination inevitable but we all know players as above who base-rape whatever) but the final responsibility lies with the game designers. If they are so lax as to create game environments and rules in which players become frustrated enough to regularly disconnect due to the behaviour of others then there is a fundamental flaw in the game's design. It should not be up to us as the players to create our own separate in-game rules of engagement to compensate for poor design. Room for individual tailoring of server rules is welcome but should be through the games own tools.

There must be many potential solutions invlolving widening areas around bases where you can spawn etc. but I'm not here to do the designers work for them. I'll leave the solution-led proactive work to the rest of you.

The final proof that somthing is wrong is that this is still a topic of conversation years after the release of BF1942 and nothing has changed!

But thats what squads are for - if someone gets to a flag and isnt a squad leader then the other members leave and rejoin so that he becomes squad leader enabling them to spawn on him.
To be honest i think base camping isnt as threatening as it was in bf1942. The squad system, the wider spawn areas and the commander option restrict it a lot.

People are never gonna agree on this one. EVER. I hear one side arguing how Baseraping isn't fun for the side getting raped. Er....losing is never fun. Where do you draw the line. Do you let them take another flag so they aren't being raped anymore. Do you tell half the winning team to quit playing for two and a half minutes so the losing team can build up some steam? Come on guys, lets get real. I just don't get it. This is a wargame. It's all about killing the enemy side correct? If you can push them back to their home base, I think you should then finish them off.

You kill them. I haven't advocated cheating at all. So everything that I've said is completely sportsmanlike. When is the last time that you saw a real sporting event where the team in the lead intentionally GAVE the other team a chance to get back into the game? That's not sportsmanship, that's pity. And to get pity, you must first be pitiful. You are actually insulting your enemy by LETTING him get out of his base. You are telling him that he is not good enough to do it on his own, that he is beneath you. I don't want my enemy to do that to me and I will give him the same respect in return. Just because the round ends and your enemy has lost doesn't mean that he won't have another chance to succeed in a few seconds. Kill him quickly and give him the chance to get even next round! Now tape up your injured uterus and get back on the battlefield, soldier!

PS - The problem isn't baseraping, it's having uncappable bases...If the base can be capped, the round ends eliminating the baseraping.
You've plain missed the point there. Not only have you missed the point I made about the attitude you displayed in your post you then go on to compare a form of entertainment (and thats what Battlefield is) to sport and in particular professional sport where winning is everything.

Your advocating of base camping when there's no else left to attack is akin to the old Football trick of when winning taking the ball to the corner flag and hogging it in the corner to run the clock down. Not against the rules but a clear contradiction of the jist of the game with the sole intention of winning. Being as Battlefield 2 is a game and therefore a form of entertainment by its very nature the playing should mean more than the winning. Therefore a good sense of sportmanship is central to having a good experience and thus enjoyment (unless you're off the norm and enjoy making people's lives a misery). If you are so centralised on beating your opponent that it outweighs you need for a furfilling gaming experience then you need to re-evaluate yourself.

Its not a question of pity (once again the attitude of winning at all costs rears its head) its a question of allow someone to play on a level playing field and not to wiped out without a chance to even react. Once again I point out its not war, its not a matter of life and death but a game made for entertainment. Therefore I can't see why someone would advocate removing a level playing field unless they are afraid that they are inferior to the opponent or that they get a kick out of exploiting others that can't react. "Insulting your enemy" that makes me laugh, what do you think you are Patton or something? So by removing them the opportunity to play on a level surface you would rather blow them away while they can't do anything? Well thats not insulting or degrading at all is it?

Besides which whats wrong with the tactic of setting ambushes outside of the spawn pointsfor enemy forces when they attempt to break out? Not only is it more rewarding as you have used tactics and strategy but negates any complaints that the opposition may have with cheating or exploits.

Battlefield 2 is not a sport and if you are playing it with the attitude you are displaying here I stick by my point of seeking help.

And what would be the proper "Sportmanlike" distance from their base to set up said ambushes before it is no longer Baseraping? That's the whole problem. Everybody has their own idea on what the proper way is to play this game. Where do you draw the line. It drives me absolutely buggy when I think about it.

Just so you know, I don't attack the last uncappable flag. I usually protect one of my own trying to prevent them from getting it back. I just don't see the big deal if someone does go over there and start peelin' caps.

You can try all you want, but your not going to convince a lot of people here that your way of playing the game is the way it should be played.

Reality check. BF2 is a frickin game, not war.

everyone starts at a level playing field at the start of the round. The next round is where the team gets to start even again.

If people though on more of a group basis and less as individuals im willing to bet youde see less moaning about base camping. You see this game isnt just about you. Its about, potentially 64 other players, and their actions, all working together to achieve an objective. In other words to destroy the enemy. The trouble is people are so wrapped up in their own little missions and dont work towards the greater good of the team - and thats when you end up getting base camped. Dice gave u VOIP and the squad system to work with yet hardly any of u use it to its full potential - but you have the audacity to complain about being base camped, which can so easily be countered if you used these things.

To me, the whole argument about basecamping is illogical.

Some say it's not sportsmanlike to attack an upcap flag when that's all an opponent has to spawn at. Is it somehow MORE sportsmanlike to rout an enemy if they're at their last cappable flag?

There are assault maps where one team(assault) has an uncap, and the other team (def) does not. Given that if the assault were to capture all the flags they would win the round, would it not make sense to attack assault at the source, to keep them from capitalizing on a major tactical advantage?

If it is "unskilled" or n00bish to attack an uncap base, is it not just as n00bish to lose all cappable bases, and be stuck with your back to the wall?

If a team has more than one uncappable base (think of Sharqi), is it wrong to attack them, since they have more than one to spawn to, and can't be pinned down? Is it ok?

The answer is pretty obvious to me.

                      J.

No, clearly, you are missing the point. Waiting in ambush for an enemy that you have already overwhelmed is not sportsmanlike. It's akin to a cat playing with a mouse before he eats it. It's only more fun for the cat. You are doing the exact same thing as raping but you're doing it in a way that makes you feel better about yourself. You're toying with your enemy instead of just finishing him off. It isn't entirely difficult to escape an uncappable base that's being raped. If your team then uses enough common sense, they can easily overcome the disadvantage. The key is to have anyone who escapes the main become a squad leader. Have the rest of the team use that person as a spawn and bam, you can cap another flag and draw the attention away from your main. Wow, what a concept, adapt and overcome. The sense of accomplishment gained from overcoming being baseraped and turning the tides on the enemy is much greater than the sense of failure gained from getting 50 yards from your own base only to be ambushed. So again, you're doing nothing for the team that is already losing the fight besides giving them false hope. You call it sportsmanlike but I'd bet they'd rather be killed in their first 5 steps than after a minute or two of working their way out of their base only to get ambushed.

"Your advocating of base camping when there's no else left to attack is akin to the old Football trick of when winning taking the ball to the corner flag and hogging it in the corner to run the clock down." This is not true. In fact, your policy of sitting back once you have the match well in hand and waiting for your enemy to leave their base before ambushing them is far more analagous to the football trick you mention above. Relaxing and waiting for the enemy to walk headlong into your trap.... You say that playing the game should mean more than winning. I'm not in the game to site see. I'm in the game to succeed. The point of the game is to win or they wouldn't keep score. If you want to sit back and take in the scenery, that's fine, but it's not the point of the game. No one likes to lose, but there will always be a loser in a game pitting two teams against each other like Battlefield. I'm not sure where you got this ridiculous sense of participation without victory but it's ludicrous. Battles are about victory. Again, I haven't advocated the use of any cheap tactics. I've only advocated moving forward until the entire enemy is eliminated. What happens when one enemy has an uncappable main and the other's is cappable? Will they stop at your main and wait for you to get a few hundred yards out of it before attacking? I think not. The side with an uncappable main always has the ability to spawn troops and vehicles. To keep this power in check, you must attack it relentlessly until the round is over. That's not unfair...
