I agree you can see more than 60fps. Just set your monitor to 60Hz and then to something higher, like 85Hz. You'll see a difference, which means your eye & brain can see a difference between 60FPS and 85FPS.

Good example, at 72Hz and above the strain to the eye is not that noticeable anymore so above 72 it gets harder though.

We also have to take into account what Hz the monitor runs at and what amount of FPS the game is producing.

E.g. running at 100Hz but game 'only' runs at 60FPS then it would still seems smooth, but if monitor runs at 60Hz and game chugs at 60FPS this would seems like far worse. (again this is on a CRT)

And because refresh rate and frame rate are tied to one another - the best rule is always the higher the better.

wolverine77, you can always try turning off VOIP to see what happens; especially if you don't use it.
not if u use a LCD monitor!! :p

when i run fraps i average 50-55 fps. My range is from a min of 25-30 and high of 70-85. I cannot tell when the fps drops down to 25-30 and my gameplay is very smooth.

ill take my average of 50 fps and own the people saying that you dont want anything lower than 60 fps because it effects the gameplay.

So what are you saying? LCD monitors should lower their refresh rate?

I'm running 75mhz with 1028x768 (I think that's correct)...with crappy fps (30-ish)? Should I lower my refresh rate or raise it? I'm running on MED to low settings...I need a new gfx card big time.

Hz doesn't have the same meaning on a LCD, as it is a different technology, the Hz doens't matter, only if you enable v-sync then the cap of your Hz will still be limited by Hz.

The real thing that is limiting how much FPS a LCD can produce spec wise is the response time, a 16ms LCD can only achive 1000/16=~60 FPS, similar to if a 60Hz monitor has disabled v-sync and games spits out 200FPS it won't matter the game only runs at 60 FPS anyway.

Running at highest Hz is best, and on a LCD it is only relevant if you have v-sync enabled to achieve better image quality/integrity

                      Re: whats good for fps?

Okay so my LCD could, theoretically, only put out 60 FPS...wow...so a lot of guys out there that buy expensive v-cards only to get bottlenecked because of their monitor. I thought with a digital connection (cable directly to card), I'd be able to more than that?

So If I had, and I don't, 60 FPS consistently, I'd be able to increase framerate if I used a CRT monitor....other things being equal.

                      That helped...thanks.

Yu guys, it does't really matter, i get like 30-65 fps with max settings, it's all fine, as long as yu get like above 20FPS you could still play the game with ease, i mean, seriously, i could beat a complete noobie that had the best setup possible for hardware. If i wanted, i could get like 150 fps by setting to all low settings, lowest resolution, and no aa or af. There's no point in doing that though, 20 fps or higher = ok, 40 fps or higher= good enough to run a fps.

If you do plan on getting a LCD monitor for gaming, it should have a really low refresh rate. Mine is only 8ms.

You probably mean response rate, measured in ms.

One thing to note that the listed response rate from manufacturer might not mean that much, it depends on the quailty of the panels if I remember correctly. Lower ms is best but only if you trust the manufacturer's specs and often they are not that reliable from what I read and heard.

So when buying a LCD I suggest that you either read reviews from sites you trust to do thorough testing or have a look at the monitor first hand and in action at a store or similar.

What program or application do you guys use for FPS? Is FRaPs the same thing with the yellow numbers on the top right/left?

                                I just use the in-game command, renderer.drawfps 1

FRAPS has the yellow numbers, if you try ATI Tray Tools it has similar counter as FRAPS.
