You know I been playing sniper quite a bit recently I have never found myself being caught out by the commander giving my position away. The main reason for this is I move a lot meaning the commander's eye's are not being drawn to that dot that never moves.

I think the commander ability is actually great in relation to sniping because it combats the really lame snipers that sit in the same spot until they get killed and basically help out no-one. We have all seen the guys who sit over looking a spawn point and just look for kills on the players that have only just spawned which is so lame so I have no sympathy when the commander tags them. This type of sniper is basically dead weight for their own team anyway.

I agree that I've seen few other 'smart' snipers in game, but I also believe the game creators have responsibility too.

WAY too many times I've gotten heart-shots with either the M24 or 95M and the guy just keeps running. I'm sorry, that's not realistic. They've neutored the sniper, theoretically to keep things balanced. As such, we are merely plinking at the enemy with little result.

Two shot kills when you're a perfect marksman in game is rediculous, and forcing us to aim for the face is the opposite of what they'll teach you in any 'sniper school.' They should up the damage done by the in-game precision rifles. 95M damage "Very High" my ass.

Where are these 'tons' of snipers??

I see tons of anti-tanks, tons of spec-ops...yet never more than a few snipers. Most ive even seen in a 32 player game is 4 or 5 snipers.

Dont know where this sniper hating is coming from.

Here because it's pathetic I actually tried it out the other day.
Sit away from the actual fighting point and click..wow amazing skill involved I was even hitting targets on the move while half drunk

Ludmila Pavlychenko and Nina Alexeyevna Lobkovskaya (over 609 Nazi kills between these lady snipers), Vasily Grigoryevich Zaitsev (overblown through propaganda, but over 240 kills), Carlos Hathcock (a.k.a. Whitefeather), John Plaster (I'd sooner buy an HS Precision stock than yours, Major), Jack Coughlin, the list goes on...

All these marksmen (and women) made dramatic differences in the conflicts in which they were (or are) involved. A good sniper can herd the enemy where a commander wants them and serve as a force multiplier by making the enemy think the resistance ahead is stronger than it actually is.

We just have a lot of wannabes in the game who don't know which end of the scope to look through.

I find the power and accuracy just fine. The thing I have noticed since trying the sniper class out is Dice have changed the Sniper roll since the previous BF games. It no longer has the ability to kill at really far distance when you can only just see the targets. In fact its not even worth shooting at such targets so spot them instead so any team mates near them see them on their mini-map. In fact all snipers should be doing a lot of spotting as they have the scope to pick targets out and you may be surprised how spotting a lot actually influences things.

Now once you realise the change and start using it for kills at medium distance you realise things are actually fine. At these distances the target normal fills the fire cone so any randomness on shots is virtually gone.

At this distances the M24 or 95M are one shot kills if you hit the head.

The Mec and PLA sniper rifles make up for there lack of power with their fire rate and it is amazingly easy to take targets down even though they tend to require 3 shots. The lack of power actually works in your favour in some ways because one of the first things most players seem to do when you land a shot on them from the auto-snipers is go prone as they figure they are fighting an assault class or something. The moment they go prone they are toast

In summary I actually like the sniper class now I have figured out how it is meant to be used in BF2.

"In fact its not even worth shooting at such targets so spot them instead so any team mates near them see them on their mini-map."

This is good, if it actually worked properly (if I point the crosshairs directly at a huge tank, and click 'report', I shouldn't be reporting a sniper carefully hidden somewhere in that vague direction - othertimes the red target simply won't appear, or will appear as a static 'phantom' symbol).

"At this distances the M24 or 95M are one shot kills if you hit the head."
At all ranges this is true (they do ~95 damage on a normal hit).

"Now once you realise the change and start using it for kills at medium distance you realise things are actually fine."
As time goes by, more players will be using unlocked assault/spec ops/medic guns - those are medium range sniper rifles (in description, and practice). Facing one of those weapons at medium range is "very bad for your health". (why the medic class has a medium range sniper rifle is completely beyond me).

Personally, I think the m24/m95 damage is fine - the accuracy could/should be improved, and a whole lot of the assault rifles should have their accuracy reduced significantly.

Our difference in opinion may be down to the definition of medium range. Its kind of difficult for me to get across what my idea of medium range actually is.
I am really talking about a little beyond the range of assault rifles but not by much.

Spotting I find works fine when you specify the specific unit type from the sub menu. I do agree it is not always perfect but seems to work most of the time for me.

Yes the M24 and 95M are one shot kills at all ranges if you hit the head but the point I was trying to make is at shorter ranges you can actually hit the head consistently without the randomness of the cone of fire which makes extreme long range shots pretty much down to luck.

When I play a sniper it's to kill snipers, in that role I'm very good. But in general I don't play them. On sharqi we had only the Tv station as the last USMC base and I went sniper up top I got 23 kills just from the last 9-10 mins of the game, luckily I had a sub-par sniper with me who had an unlocked m95 who kept dying so I'd nick his kit and fend off that MEC chopper ... even killed the pilot once :P

I don't consider myself a talented sniper but I kill more than I get killed with it ... by quite a margin.

Im not hating snipers i just cant stand all of them wasting therer bullets only so the enemy can shoot them and take are base.
i started using sniper not so long ago and im getting better at it

on the USMC side i get about 10 kills with sniper average

I do agree that snipers should probably be immune to the scan the same as the Spc-ops guys...
red dots appear on the map, but commanders should chose"spotted" on the red dot, that "spotted" action will illustrate a "sniper" call and icon on teammates maps.

Another question, I've unlocked the upgrade to the basic sniper rifle, and have found that it isn't one shot...one kill....

Is there a method to using the weapon, such as keeping the zoom on the scope engaged after a shot, for better accuracy? Also, when i play as a sniper, i manage to put the crosshairs on the enemy infantry soldiers head, and squeeze off a round, without repeated success. Anyone have any good tips for sight alignment, sight picture? Right between the eyes and another commie dies? Let me know guys...thanks.

The m95 is identical (damage-wise) to the m24, but is less accurate.

No - the guns have a CoF that you cannot change - some shots will always miss.

"i manage to put the crosshairs on the enemy infantry soldiers head, and squeeze off a round, without repeated success"
                              - some shots will miss due to CoF.
                              - I *think* some shots will hit ground that your PC hasn't rendered due to LoD.
                              - some shots which you 'know are good', don't register. The target is stationary at relatively close range, the gun is lined up - but there's no puff of smoke, no orange flash, no sound of an impact, no clue where the bullet went.

The last category seems to happen mostly when I am looking down at a close target, I have no idea what happens to the bullet .

You can stay scoped in after a shot by holding in the fire button, but it doesnt increase accuracy. The only real advantage to the m95 would be the bullet proof glass penetration for helicopters and armored cars but hitting them would be next to impossible anyway. As far as headshots go i usually aim for the center of the top of their head. Aiming at like the mouth has proven to let me down alot so i always aim high. Plus if there is any deviation aiming high will give you better luck at a distant headshot. And for your last comment "no clue where the bullet went" get use to it its pretty rare for me to aim and not at least hit the person but it happens from time to time in the end sniper rifles are just shitty.
