I too liked playing as sniper in all other games, besides this one..

when EA forced all servers to have commander mode enabled,
they basically took STEALTH out of the game..

Having a magical map that displays where all your enemies are
CONSTANTLY is the most idiotic thing I ever seen in a war game.
Especially one that 'tried' to be somewhat realistic with their game,
    they failed big time there.

I see where they were trying to go with the commander mode, all
they did was add artillery spam, and deleted stealth.

I agree with what most have posted in here. My biggest beef is knucklehead teammates climbing ladders into my claymores and then punishing me....after I WARNED THEM WHERE I WAS AND WHERE THE CLAYMORES WERE! It is so frustrating to lose hard earned points as well as your blind side defense because of some idiot NOOB! My other gripe is the commander scans, why aren't snipers invisible like spec-ops? Hell we are a lot more camoflagued than they are. It sucks to get set up in a good spot with proper defense in place only to get arty'd by some lazy commander.
Besides all of that though I still love sniping (especially counter-sniping). Shooting down a full helo is rare but oh-so-satisfying! :)

Spec-Ops aren't invisible(contrary to some people's opinion). They aren't wearing Metal Gear Solid-esque stealth camoflauge or anything. They are also easy to detect since suddenly one of your commander toys will suddenly turn yellow(gee, I wonder if a Spec Ops soldier is nearby...)...side issue...if it's condition red, why the hell do the icons become yellow? :)

I've used arty against snipers many a time simply because my team is too scattered around the enemy to risk using it anywhere else. It sucks for the sniper I know...but that's how the game is right now. In my mind, the two worst classes are Sniper and Spec-Ops right now, but it looks like Sp. Ops will get a boost with the new patch.

I know that EA wanted to keep BF2 from turning into a CS AWP-style snipe-a-thon(cause that would suck), but this is pretty bad. They may as well just remove the sniper kit altogether and put claymores in the Spec Ops bag.

Average 40+ on any map, unless i'm sniping aircraft, I NEVER use the m29. Too innacurate for long range, and too slow for close range.

But they don't turn up on a commanders radar in scan mode do they?? I think they don't... But is easy to spot snipers like this, one red dot on a hill or building all on his own, lol...

I do agree that snipers should probably be immune to the scan the same as the Spc-ops guys...

He's right..there aren't a lot of good snipers in this game. At least I haven't run into any. There are times when I snipe and I'll make a sniper squad. Other snipers will join and they pretty much all suck. I don't have much respect for snipers that sit back in one spot and get 5 kills in 20 minutes. You gotta move around and be aggressive to really help your team. Nothing beats helping out an attacking squad by taking out people in front of them.

I may not play as a sniper that often...but when I do, I hold my own.

To get alot of kills you need to use EVERYTHING you've got. And never stay in one spot, most of my kills are while shooting people on the run, and claymore'ing a hummer looking to make me roadkill. And i'm not going to lie, camping a transport chopper can get you 5+ kills at a time while you kill the guys who think the pilot just gets out and tries to fly themself. Claymores are your friend, whether you place them at entry points, your backdoor, or at flags. Sniper's are meant to be annoying in both real life, and gaming, I just play the part.

I haven't been able to confirm this, but I've noticed it's much more difficult to snipe targets accurately when looking up or down more than 30 degrees in either vertical direction. Do it when you're proning and you'll rarely hit. Now try the same thing, but hold down the crouch key. It's actually easier to hit targets. Not sure if it was designed that way for realism (can't aim too far up or down when proned, but can when crouched).

Sorry to digress here a little from topic at hand. Is the upgraded Sniper rifle any more accurate than the default ?

I often get tons of points with my ammo bags but i rarley see a talented sniper in a game. Theres usually like 2 good ones but ive never seen a sniper with like 15+ killz. Im not hating snipers i just cant stand all of them wasting therer bullets only so the enemy can shoot them and take are base.
I had quick go as a sniper because think it's a noob class.Ended up racking up about 25kills..Easy..

I don't spose you play on any aussie servers mate? I think of myself as a better than average sniper, given as my sniping accuracy is much higher than most peoples whose stats i look at (55%, and 60% with pistol)

I agree theres a lot of inexperienced snipers going round, but everbody is at some stage. If i come across one in a game, whether they're on my team or not, if they're doing something particularly wrong i'll let them know, try n give them a hand. If they leave their back open, i'll stab them, if i find them again and they still left it open, i wont stab them but tell them. sometimes i'll go along side them to make my point, and show my good intentions. Often im killed by them, in which case i'll proceed to own them out of the game, but sometimes they'll listen, and learn pretty quick.

Main problem i find with inexperienced snipers, esp those using the semis, is they fire way too quickly. It gives their position away to the enemy, and reduces the likelihood of a kill because of the reduced accuracy.

Its basically a matter of them learning how to play most effectively, and i just try to make it easier for them.

"Is the upgraded Sniper rifle any more accurate than the default?"

                              Depends what the 'default' is.
                              - it's got more deviation than the m24, and so is less accurate. It's also got the worst scope of any of the sniper rifles adding to it's accuracy problems.
                              - compared to the SVD/chinese rifle, I don't know. I prefer the m95 to those weapons as it allows huge damage in 1 hit, but it's up to you.

                              ---
[my theory on why the m95 seems slightly better than it is...]

There MAY be a bug with LOD - sometimes you'll see someone on top of a hill, they will appear to float a metre or 2 above the hill. This is caused by your PC not rendering the hill correctly (small details only render when you are within range - a sniper's target is rarely within range).

The issue is - if there is a bump/ledge in front of your target that isn't being rendered, will the bullet simply hit the bump? As far as I can tell, the answer is 'yes'. This causes 'invulnerable' targets - which is rather annoying. (as a sniper, I've seen this with incoming fire - snipers often fire multiple shots into the terrain in front of me, for no reason).

It MIGHT be that the m95 is better at penetrating the invisible terrain/ledge/whatever, but I'm not sure how to test this.

This also leads to the conclusion that you should never use terrain if you want to properly hide.

It also may explain why some people think there is bullet drop - if you 'aim high' then you stand a better chance of not being obstructed by any bumps/ledges.

hooray for snipers since they serve NO purpose to the chain of command and are just nub cs rejects
