It's a bit of a system shock coming on to BF2, as it seems like a completely different type of game all to itself. Rock hard veterans of Unreal Tournament have been known to cry once they get in here
I found I sucked completely (and still do for the most part) but I'm getting better. Just follow the tips above, ignore the ignorant smartass teenagers, and soon your game will come together.
For deffo join squads, use teamspeak or VOIP, and pick a kit till you get good with it. If you don't like squads, then Spec Ops is a good alternative to sniper, just avoid everyone and C4 enemy artillery and vehicles. Rig enemy BH's and watch your kill rate soar :)

btw I know what you mean about the accuracy and enemies seemingly getting one hit kills on you. Irritating all the way up till you see them fly over your APC and you shove a 50 caliber machine gun up their hawk.

This game seems different...I dunno why either. Just have fun with it, that's all that matters. Don't look at stats.

I was always good at games like bf1942, cs, rainbow six series, MoH series, CoH, UT series, and an assortment of many many other FPS games. I mean...I have a long history with FPS games. But once I got in this game I've lately been like "Urgh..." and feeling kinda sucky. I have my good days but then have my bad days (not as bad where my deaths are higher than kills though).

You said this was your first FPS anyway right? Dude, your fine then.

Hey Mr SF guy,all you had to do was ask me nicely to remove my avatar but since you're an insolent arrogant jerk I think I'll keep it. I have it to remember my cousin that was in the Gulf Way - ****ing ass.

heya, where did u get ur brain (if u have one)? in a charity raffle?? lol, moron. Talking to Thirdeyepry, you just dont worry, you'll get better as this is your first fps (pretty bad that your first fps is a multiplayer one). I would suggest you to play sometime in singleplayer so you can improve your skills at flying choppers (if u can pilot the cobra well,it really kickasses), planes, riding tanks, etc. Moreover i think u should leave the sniper class and go for another like SpecOps (the one i use), Assault or Medic (this one specially with the L8 unlocked). They are powerful if u know everything about them. I've sniped snipers with the G36C and they didnt even get to know where i were (the same using C4 against tanks). That is, don't care man, just keep training.

i wouldn't worry my stats are shite too :)

Good tip though is yes go on a squad (although i always play in a squad with my mate and i still get owned :P )

another tip is find a map you like preferably close quarters and find a server that just plays that mapo and play around at going as medic or support etc you can soon rack up points ( evgen if you die loads :P )

In reference to other posters i like the idea of going as commander i think i'd like to make that my 'thing' maybe it will help me do better although its probably best to practise it on single player so you know what to do when you play for real :)

on the brighter side, you could run into the annoying problem of kicking a lot of ass and getting banned from the server because the admin is losing. This has happened twice and I want to pull my hair out. It pisses me off in a bad way.

dude, everyone is a victim of this (well, at some point anyway)! you will see every single player new to the game complaining about this. like, they'll waste an entire mag on an enemy and they won't die and all the enemy would do is insta prone and kill them with one shot!

how well you do directly correlates to how much fun you have, imo.

if i'm constantly getting killed or constantly getting spawn camped where i can't even play, thats no fun at all. if i can't hit anything but yet people are killing me in 1 shot, i'm not having fun. i'm so pissed off that i want just throw the game out the window and never play again. thats not fun

people tking you because they want that vehicle or punishing you because they are too stupid to see that big red skull and crossbones on the screen is not fun.
people bh whoring a whole map so you can't even spawn or just bh whoring in general pisses me off and i have no fun on maps like that.

when i'm doing well and getting points, then i have fun.

                        these are my pitiful stats..
Ive come to the conclusion that I suck.
The only way Ive noticed i can get over 30 points a game is medic, and supplies..or be a passenger in a heli.
When Im a sniper..Ive gotten alot better, found spots and such..tho it still seems bullets can hit me form the ground no matter how far I shimmy back after getting hit peeping over the edge..sometimes it amazes me the ease of sniping someone with a semi-auto is from the ground by firing eraticly then a high powered rifle form above.
Ive come to the conclusion no matter how much I Claymore ladders, Ill run out of all...2..that I get (WTF..2!!)..1 a "more" noob then me will encounter and another an enemy will run into, then I have the option of wating for my knifing or playing run around and find a spot, "building with no ladder..ok..check next one, nope no latter..ok next one"

So best sniping class so far Ive found..AT, **** snipe people, tanks, helis you name it its 1 shot that seems more accurate alot more damaging..but very detectable. Tho lack of grenades I dont like.
Medic, support..to hell with killin people, just supply..continously..no matter what your doing drop bags, run over to groups...I whored a ton of points..got bored..wont play them again, fun to whore up points and such dont get me wrong, but not my cup of tea.
Assualt/spec Ops..cool classes. Assualt is my "Im so pissed at dieng I need some armor on and Im gonna run in ape **** and try to just open up on people" Spec Ops is my "I wanna play with C4 and hope that a laser sight helps my stupid inaccurate ass. Engineer, having gave it much play, used it once..got TK banned from idiots runnin into my Landmines and kicked form another server for that to.

I like the vehicles, ashame they spawn like every 30 sec it seems (except when your sitting on a flight deck with all the other BH campers "Hey, i need a ride", same with artilary strikes..why the quick reload and spawn on things like that? I am a driver master in cars in and trucks, I switch to 3rd person and rip..see some fodder and hit F2 and its on. Tanks, Im so so, not to bad I guess, I like using AT and hoping out if the other tank has gotten the best of me, runnin over behind a wall and going "hey dick, I got more shells on me" while hes firing at the smoking tank i was in or still staring at my recently exploded tank.
Helis, I can fly the transport one (thats the BH right?) Ive gotten greta at it, since theres no weapons to use I can use 3rd person, Im good at droping off picking up, hovering over flags etc.. Now attacking copter..I suck ass, used it a few times different occasions..way to fast for me to be effective with it.
last time I tried it I crashed and got kicked for crashing it.

Ive come to the conclusion too that I cant hit anything..not a thing..if I see a person i can shoot my ass of, jumping, proning, lying down..they hit me 95% of the time but ill hit 10% of the time.

Ive also noticed I seem to be a master of the being shot once and dieng technique,..its always walking, hiding, BLAM!! dead...I want that gun!
Takes me eratic firing an reloading to kill some one, while Im so squishy i drop like a brick in 1.2 sec's of fire.

Well its my first FPS..Ill keep trying, got 75 hours under my belt now, and such a puny amount of points, and my ability to die 3 times as much as I kill technique down.

Im gonna try a new User name, get some fresh stats and be more fodder for better players. just wish EA made unlocks easier, so many people dont play for the team. They drive/fly off on ya if they see a chance for points, they leave recently captured flags while you can see incoming forces just so they can get to a next flag point and medics seem it wise to revive me under fire or when Im out of bullets..im thinking "ok i died..no one chose support so theres no bullets around and no supply drops, its ok to die get some new claymores (grrr) or rockets.." nope medic revies me..we both die..10-15 mroe second to wait.
i've been playing this game since release. been playing fps games for years. have only been playing online fps games for about 3 years now though. i have the same problems as you do. i'm no where near a great, hell, not even good fps player. i very rarely get more than 10 or so points a map unless i am playing 64 player karkand and just use the support hand out ammo. last night i had a few of my best games and a few of my worst and pissed off moments. had over 30 points for about 5 games in a row on karkand by just handing out ammo and throwing some grenades and shooting a little bit. before that i was constantly getting killed and tked and just having a shitty time at it.

i hate the quick arty strikes too. sometimes it seems like you get blasted by one and as soon as you respawn theres another one. especially on maps like karkand.

Battlefield 2 is quite odd in that it's glitchy. For example: Aiming at your opponent's head and firing with a sniper rifle? Won't work. Aiming a foot below his head, instant death, head shot.

Want to kill things as an infantry man? You need to compensate for the ironsights (aka dodgy range finding). That comes with practise. It suddenly clicks. It can take hours. I've played about 50+ FPSs (I have over a hundred PC games) and it took me 3 hours before I could even use the assault rifle in this game properly (ie. outshoot anyone).

I don't care if my kill/death ratio is crap. It shows three things to me: 1) I'm a good teamplayer, my team points compensate for it, healing, rezzing, capturing 2) I don't use cheap tactics like nade spamming 3) about half of the people in the game, that's 500,000(!), are gunna have that a higher death than kill rating. so really, who cares? :p

Just enjoy the game, keep practising and it'll fall into place. If you play a game often enough, you will get better. Since it's your first FPS, it may take longer but trust me, it'll click into place.

Thirdeyepry: You put tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. Thank you very much. Don't worry, you will get better. Or will you?

I've been playing FPS's since Duke Nukem and have never been good at any of them. I've completed them but only because I'm stubborn. I started playing BF1942 on the day it was released and have yet to understand how to kill an enemy as easily as they kill me.

The only thing I was pretty damn good at was sniping but you're never going to accumulate stat-points being a sniper. It's great fun which is the most important thing.

Occasionally I get excellent "one-shot" kills by jumping and spraying wildly in the general direction of an enemy but it usually ends with being accused of cheating. i wouldn't know where to start going about cheating.

Here's a few tips I have given to other players that are having a hard time.

                              1. Fire in bursts or semi auto.
                              2. Use your sights.
                              3. Fire from the prone position if you have time. (Always with support kit)
                              4. Utilize 'cover and concealment.' ie, don't run down the middle of the road!
                              5. Use your grenades BEFORE you storm a flag.
                              6. Don't bring a gun to a tank battle, attack targets with appropriate weapons.
                              7. Don't stay in one place for too long.
                              8. Join a squad and use teamwork.
                              9. Use VOIP, Teamspeak, Ventrillo, 2 styrofoam cups with sting and paperclips, or whatever it takes to communicate with your teamates.
                              10. Practice, practice, practice!

My stats aren't the greatest either. Heck, I don't even have a 1:1 kill:death ratio yet, while most people have either 2:1 or even HIGHER.

Don't get me wrong, I'm obviously not the only person that has below a 1:1 kill:death ratio, but I can definetely understand how you feel... I get smacked around alot on Battlefield 2. I've quickly found out that there are many factors that determine how good you will do, though:

-Server. (Is it laggy? Are the teams balanced?)
-Teams. (Are they balanced? Does your team work together?)
-Squads. (Are there any good squads? Do they work together?)

I've found that these 3 things really kind of forecast whether I will totally suck, or whether I will actually have a 1:1, 2:1, or even higher kill:death ratio before the round ends.

Also read HorrorBusiness's tips in the post above, they're very helpful indeed. And about his "Don't bring a gun to a tank fight" tip... that's definetely very important. If you see a tank and you have the... lets say... Medic kit, DO NOT start lobbing grenades at the tank unless you have something to hide behind after doing so because:
                                1. It alerts the tank.
                                2. It doesn't do much damage to the tank.

Only try to do something about it if you are Spec Ops (C4, but be careful) or the AntiTank kit (do not stand out in the middle of the street and fire a rocket, find a corner, pop out and fire a shot, then go back behind the corner and hide, because after the first shot the tank driver will probably be going nuts trying to find you.)
