Use Cacheman to see how much RAM and paging file space (virtual memory) is being used. It doesn't matter if you alt-tab out, that memory is still loaded (CPU usage might change, but that's not the point).

Cacheman is the only program I know that tells you how much of the paging file you're actually using, not just how much the computer has allocated for max usage.

With 1gig of RAM I can play well at medium graphics, 1024x768, 90% draw distance. With 512k I can play well at low graphics, 75% draw distance, same res, although sometimes it burps near the beginning of a new map, as it finds more stuff to load.
