getting more than 1 gig of ram...

Am I the only person here who thinks it's a waste of money to get more than 1 gig of ram? When I look at the benchmarks for games, 1 extra gig makes hardly any difference. Not only that but the recommended specs for all modern games are 1 gig, or even 512, and reccomended is what you need to play smooth. My computer specs are:

3200+ overclocked to 3800 level
6800GT 256mb
1 gig DDR2 ram

and I never even notice slowdown at all, all on high except for lighting. What is it with people here who have 7800GTX SLI with 4 gigs ram? I can play any modern pc game on high settings real smooth with no slowdown, yet people here say that it's good to have an extra gig?? I think my computer is high end, I mean it plays everything fine, but people like more than 1 gig ram?

Honestly, if there is any improvement in 2 gigs over 1 gig in bf2 then bf2 is simply badly optimized. With cs source, no-one has more than 1 gig. And I run bf2 real smooth despite having only 1 gig...

I mean my computer is way above average, it is in the top three percent of computers tested at a website. I think anyone with better specs then me is either rich or is obsessed with getting really high fps even when they don't need to.

Battlefield 2 benifits greatly from another gig of ram. 1 GB of ram has been a gaming standard for years and I am not supprised that BF2 needs more ram. An extra gig of ram will help loading and general gameplay when graphics settings are set to high. There is no other game out there that comes close to BF2 so you cant compare it to any other game, especially CSS which is graphically quite basic (thats why people with crap machines play it).

Also you say your cpu is a 3200+ overclocked to 3800 level, so I assume that is an Athlon yeah? Athlons do not support DDR2 ram , unlike what you say in your specs.

The effect extra RAM will have on your BF2 performance varies greatly depending on your other hardware.
I see that you've got a good CPU, and a 256MB memory gfx card, that's twice as much gfx memory as I've got. Since your graphics card has this amount of memory, your physical 1GB RAM wont be utilized as much as from a gfx card with only 128MB.

It's all about hardware cooperating with eachother, bottlenecks and so on.

Don't look too much into benchmarks or requirements, but listen to the users who actually have made the 1 -> 2GB RAM upgrade. Most, if not all I've heard from has noticed a considerable drop in lag/stuttering issues after upgrading.

Hmmm, well while you are still loading your map, I will be grabbing that Heli and capping flags while you stare at the screen and listen to the BF2 music.

I personally see a big difference in upgrading from 1 gig to 2 gigs. Now over 2 gigs.. nah.. the games do not need it at this moment. But next year? Possibly.

so you spend what, $200 so you get in 10 to 15 seconds faster? My computer already loads maps reasonably fast. Also I never notice any slowdown so I don't get how it would improve much. Don't mean to be rude or anything but I just don't really get this new trend of 2 gigs ram :|

Heh, I play BF2 on MY crap machine...

128MB ATi Radeon 9800 Pro, 2.4GHz P4, 512MB RAM. If I'm lucky, my mom will buy me another gig as a gift, because right now I'm saving up for a l33t new system, not upgraded RAM.

I have 1280 mb and the game loads quickly and never has to pause and load from HDD at the same time as never using more than 800mb so quite where the 2 gig has come from is beyond me.

Simply alt + tab to your desktop and open task manager....you will see how much of your ram BF2 is using. I can guarantee you it will be nowhere near 2 gig LOL !!

I went from 1 to 2 gigs so that after an hour or so of gameing my computer wouldnt slow down to the point where I had to turn it off. BF2 uses an insane amount of ram and after playing the game for a while it would get very choppy and I was not able to play the way I wished to play. So I personally needed 2 gigs of ram so I wouldnt have to worry about random 2 second lock ups while flying a jet or something.

LOL at you. u cant ctrl-alt-delete and see how much bf2 is using while u play BECAUSE YOU ARENT PLAYING THE GAME. your checking your task manager. the second you switch outta bf2 it drops down in memory usage. so task manager is useless. this has been discussed for a month now.
