In real life in a heli, you dont actually put your whole hand around the stick, you only use your thumb and index holding it around the base of the stick. you are supposed to make very slight movements, and dont over correct.

      ya

yes i only use mouse and keyboard and im godlike with heli now the plane thats another matter im good but i find doing loops i have to pick up mouse and move it in the middle of it and it takes alot longer to do a loop. Guess i need a joystick. :)

It's easy, Going full throtthe, nose up and cut power to almost ALMOST nothing. you'll float down, and when you reach the desired height, give it more power. I hovered 3' form the ocean on Oman in an attempt to let a guy who was swimming get in, but he liked to excersize, I guess.

its all about experience, i sucked at flying heli's but now im awesome , and yea good metaphor, it is a marble on a book and you have to gentle correct to make sure you dont go slammin into a tree

              I use mouse and keyboard.
The most important thing to me, is to set the mouse sensetivity WAAAAY up for chopper control, i got it allmost maxed out.
This makes the chopper a LOT more controlable.
THe trick when controlling a chopper is to do every thing in good measure.
Never steer to fast when you just start out, you will just lose control.
It's your first reaction in most computergames to always control in very harsh ways, allway just give full trottle and sweep the mouse across your pad and such, this doesn't work for BF2 Helis.
Move with causion and correct all the time.
And most of all practice a lot in singleplayer (you won't have to worry about getting shot down in easy).

              Hope this helps

Main menu -> Controls -> Click Heli tab -> Bottom leftish.

Personally I max the yaw and pitch to 10 for helis and have mouse sensitivity at 3.5 (used to be 3.0 until recently, upped it a bit to be able to react quicker).

Probably the best way to practice hovering is up high :). Let go of the throttle and pull the nose up *slightly* until speed dips to zero. Once you have that working at height, try it low enough so the 'hover indicator' (it's a circle on the HUD, starts in the centre when it appears) comes on. This denotes where you are relative to the spot on the ground you were over when you first came into a rough hover. It will move around, experiment to find out how it moves (IIRC it's like the HUD is a top down view from your position, so if the circle is up and left you're behind and to the right of the hover spot). Keep that circle *stationary* anywhere and you're in a fully stable hover. It doesn't have to be in the centre.

Anyway, find the max height that will appear at, and practice using it (nothing to hit unless there's a tall tree, pylon or chimnet, or ... ), after that go for practicing timing the hover to be stable just above the ground without having to lower yourself with reverse throttle.

Personally I find external views too disorienting, even the from behind on F10, I think because of the slight delay in it following movement. But you might want to try them when low enough to see the ground.

                    HTH,

I have racked up over 66hrs flying a heli. I suggest using keyboard only like I do. I find it extremely easy to hover. Like the guys say you want to have your heli level front/rear side/side. When I'm hovering I'm making small corrections, tapping keys either left/right up/down and tapping the power key as the heli will naturally descend slowly with no power on.

I also don't come into flags slowly like 9.9/10 people I have flown with. I come in flat out with nose dipped then either use 2 of these methods. If you coming in straight at a flag descending with nose dipped just before I get to the flag I crank it back up till its about to stop then level it off. This helps you slow down to a stop but make sure you counter it by going forward at the right moment otherwise you will start going backwards. Other way to do it is come to the flag then spin/turn the heli 180 degs which brushes all the speed off.

While you are hovering capping the flag with the heli level and hovering, rotate the heli either full 360deg or 180deg back and forth to cover the base you are capping. This ensures you get a good field of view and can immediately take off if you see a tank or something coming/about to fire. The heli will rotate quickly while level/hovering with little to no power on just tapping the power to keep you level.

Heli's that slowly descend to a flag are waiting to get blown up by just about anything. Quick in, take flag, quickly out or you will die.

The thing I hate most about these heli's is their rotation speed. To get it rotate better you need to use a combination of turning the heli while rotating and on/off the power with nose either dipped or raised. I can easily circle bases above tanks etc and blow them while circling and the heli cranked on its side. Took me a while to get them circling like a BFV heli but now its really easy just takes practice.

Want a 1st hand demo, come co-pilot with me in the heli on our ranked server and see how its done. Server name Raging Rebels Ranked 1.02 .Server is located in the US and when they go to sleep it can drop below 10 players then it empties (thats the gay 1.02 patch grrrrrrr) But will be loaded up to capacity when they rise and shine.

                      Cheers

...Hovering with a joystick isn't hard at all, you just have to find the right amount of collective to give with your switch.. its actualy around 25% collective and you will not gain altitude or anything, then its just a matter of correcting yourself, which is really easy, even on a shitty joystick

keboard and mouse, i agree with the earlier comment finding the right sensativity is the key, and why is it that when you jump out a chopper it keeps on flying around and going up? but if you take your hands off the controls it plummets to the virtual earth!!!
