    Pwned by 'tards.

Granted, my Kinetix 3DSMax certification was done about 6 years ago, and I haven't really done any 'serious' mesh making in about a year... but here's my work to back up my mouth.

They're for a game, so yes... low poly counts (don't remember the numbers, as I said... over a year old) and you can see the obvious use of tri-vertices polygons. Also, untextured.

A light Cruiser... smaller ship under it in the first is a fighter.

Battleship... cruiser is underneat it, with other ships for sizing, in the first.

So, yeah.. obviously I know nothing about modeling, low poly or high.

Everyone calling me an idiot, and wrong... put up, or shut up.

I don't understand your statement. Unless you wrote it wrong, and meant to say that a low poly model can look the same as a high poly model, if the low poly model is done correctly.

If that's what you're trying to say, then well... that's just a dumb thing to say. Seriously. You see all the rounded trim on that PSG1? Did you even look at the detail of that model? You do realize that every bit of detail is at least 3 polygons, minimum, right? If you tried to make a model that detailed to use in a game, having to use polys with 3 vertices, you'd end up with two or three times as many polys.... Follow me here... where he could use one poly to make a square, you'd have to use two.

Although, your statement is true to a LIMITED degree to a lower quality model... but there is no f'n way in hell one highly-skilled 3D artist can make a model of 6,000 poly's have the minute level of detail that a model has with 186,000 polys. Just not possible, untextured or textured.

6,000 vs 60,000.... MAYBE... and I'm still doubtful at a X10 loss of poly detail. 6,000 vs 12,000-18,000? Probably...

Just in case I'm wrong, I dropped an e-mail to a friend of mine who works for Rockstar. He also worked for Sir-Tech at one time, doing 2D for Jagged Alliance 2 and 3D modelling for Wizardry 8. I sent him every comment I've made. I'll throw up his reply, right or wrong, when I get it.

This will be my last post in this thread because this is just getting stupid. But if you read my previous post I said that just because one model has more polygons doesn't mean that it is automatically better than another model with a lower amount of polygons. If you have seen the developement of models over time (and if people choose to optimize it), you will see that the poly count can drop considerably, and it will look just as good. I never said it had to be low poly or high poly, I just said that it could have LESS polygons... big difference there. It's obvious that I am getting on your nerves as you are getting on mine, so let's just forget it.

Exactly what evil said. Obviously if two models are made "perfectly" (which is a word that can't really be applied to models, due to the different poly limits imposed) then of course the higher poly one will be better. And i think i speak for Evil when i say that, when we were trying to explain that a model with less poly's can be better than one with more, we meant along the lines of 3k vs 6k, not 6k x 188k.

Look at these models. The M21 (rear model in both) is mine, and it's 2200 Triangles. Compare that to the PSG in front of it, which is 66,000 polys. Now, is that one 30x more detailed than mine? Hell, is it remarkably better at all? Personally, i don't think so. Yes, they're different guns, but that's not really the point. Yet his is far higher poly.

THIS is what we're trying to say. Obviously really pro 3d artists can utilise every poly very well, and as such poly limits will heavily affect the end quality. I think that's obvious and goes without saying. Given that, that's obviously not who we're referring to. I dunno about Evil, but i'm talking about the modelling community at large (such as myself and the guy who started this thread) who arent so skilled (otherwise every mod would be as good as a real game, which quite obviously they are not). To say that a higher poly model is undeniably better than a lower poly one is to say that everyone is a perfect modeller.

If i gave you some materials, and a hammer, and told you to make a cupboard, you would probably make one using the materials. If i then told a proper carpenter to make the exact same one, i'm sure he would use less materials. Why? Because he is more experianced and knows where he can shave off the materials, he knows where to use them and where not to. It's the exact same as 3d modelling.

Ok I lied that wasn't my last post. I just want to say this - Kaltagesta that is exactly what I have been saying the whole time. Oh and by the way nice M21.

There is a good market for quality models. Look at it this way. He spent two weeks working on it. Say someone "better" (not a dig, Jonas, just hypothesizing) could make it in a week... five business/working days... 3 hours per day... so 15 hours. You really think a quality artist is going to work for $1/hour? Get real.

It's not uncommon for companies to outsource 3D requirements.

All of you monkey-a$$es need to just STFU, and go back to your cashier jobs, and minimum wage. At least Jonas is trying to make a living, or some money, doing something he likes doing.

And yeah, I'm f'n caustic today. Cry me a friggin' river.

            EDIT::

BTW, Jonas -- the high-poly model kicks ass, and is well worth the $15.
lol yep modelling is hard work, i have tried lightwave 8.0 but what the heck...its so difficult to understand :P
it takes hours to make a model...so congrats making that sniper model..
ill try it out! thanks alot

jonaz, is your model game ready? or does it have to be comverted in some way to work in the game?

Re: free weapon download at file front.

I just saw this post and got interested, not because I play BF2, but because I make 3D, mainly high-poly stuff.

First of all, for everyone that think it's weird to pay for a model and what the good use of it is, as SaintSinner said earlier in this thread, basically, you save A LOT of time doing it.

Well, you CAN make movies with them.
Say for example a company has 2 weeks to do a intro cinematic for a game or what not, they might buy a few models instead of putting their own modelers to work because they save time.
It's not about the companys own modelers can do a better job or not, if they don't have the time to do it it doesn't matter. A deadline is more important than quality (I'm of course speaking about good quality against extremely good quality) in this business.

I definitely agree you on this point Evil, its common sense. But a low-poly model doesn't always work, for example in pre-rendered stuff, like game cinematcs.

Well, that depends. One can get an extremely good looking model in-game with different texture maps, especially with normal maps. But to make a normal map you usually make a high-poly version of it first (for those of you who don't know what normal maps are, just google for it) so there's still good use of high-poly models though. But for pre-rendered stuff it's almost always better to use high-poly stuff (assuming it's not objects in the background of course).

Just wanted to add for Kaltagesta, VERY nice model you've done there.
We should all listen to him because he definitely knows what he's doing.

Re: free weapon download at file front.

yeah have to way in here - first of all dont be such a tool saint sinner it doesn't get you anywhere round here. espescially telling people to "go back to there minimum wage" - who the F@#K do you think you are? - tht may not have been directed at me but the way you worded it will offend any1.

i think kaltegesta puts it best - there is definitely an art to low poly modelling - and i would have to say, in sense, way more skill to it. keeping in mind a polycount and producing an extremely refined model is certainly not easy. so in tht way i wouldnt say tht a high poly is generally better or a true indicator of talent.

tht and what were you thinkin saying tht a skinner cant pullout the complex details ^^ like above said - normal mapping works freakin wonders...
