My grandpa was in the Army and fought in WWII.

He got the Congressional Medal of Honor for storming an MG nest. Don't think it was on D-Day though.

He's not around to tell the stories, only what I hear from parents. He committed suicide from post-traumatic stress, sadly.

I hope to honor him by doing my own part and joining the air force.

Sorry about your gramps. War does that sadly. Don't think my dad was in any wars. He was in boot camp though.

I am only 15 so no military, yet... I am in the JROTC and after college (hopefully West Point) I will go into the Army, hopefully serve in the 75th RR as a Rifle Platoon Leader.

My grandfater (RIP) was in the Navy as an admiral and was awarded the medal of honor for action in Vera Cruz.

I highly honor all those in the military and those who have served (including other nations). I wish to join you all someday.

              Not myself.

But my Grandfather was in the Navy during WWII. I can recall his stories vividily.

THE GREATEST GENERATION THAT EVER LIVED.

my older brother is in the royal marine commandos and will be deployed back to iraq or afghanistan in a few weeks.

i myself am an ex cadet. have full respect for the forces though:)
I thought 1WFR were on ceremonial in London at the mo? Sucks that the Woofers are being merged into the Mercian with Staffs and Cheshire regiments.

As you may be able to tell I used to serve in the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters.

they are indeed but my dad is acting mto(qm) over in camp bastion, afghanistan for 3 more months before returning home. I think he has to go back out again after christmas though

yeah its a shame about the merge. A lot of history in regiments just disappears.

i dont suppose you knew my father at all?? when did you serve from?

That's ****e that he has to go back out after already serving a tour, typical of our under manned army these days though.

                      What's his name? I served from 96 - 99.

Just noticed that you're in Andover, I take it your Dad is from up Norf?

yup its a shame about the undermanned business but with all the yobs and morons moping about you would think they would bring in nationa service for 1 year to kick them all into shape!

yes my dad was from mansfield nottingham

around that time i think my dad was wo2 richard slaney and we were based in tidworth around 96-98 then got posted to oman for 2 and a half years

hes now been captain for a year and a half(ish) and i think hes on extended service

does the name ring any bells?

                          Couldn't agree more.

No the name doesn't ring a bell unfortunately, but I was in Tidworth so must have been on base at the same time.

I know Mansfield quite well, I'm from Nottingham myself. If your Dad was brought up in Mansfield I'm suprised he didn't end up down the pits.
