I normally play now on 20 -30 man servers and find myself defending a silos on my own alot..I can normally hold on to a silo for the whole round ( with a bit of luck)I find that most people throw alll their motion mines down in one big pile.I have stopped doing this ...I just throw one down..for the following reason...players on the whole just look at one mine and think ,ah to hell with it and drive straight into it - this increase my chances of a one shot kill on any vehicle - which is essential when defending solo..Ive seen 1 motion mine take down the heli transport on a number of occasions in the last week ;I dont know if it was damaged or not though - so thats my tip put either 1 or 2 down - also Id like to see a lot more players using a defensive style and actually trying to hold onto the silos they take; but this aint gonna happen though( I know the points are lower) but in the long run it helps your team win; and therefore helps towards your war college ribbon

Yeah, defending one of the "hot" silos (generally the ones with Walker spawns) can actually be very rewarding on the points end. That picture I posted of the 370-something squad score was from a Shuhia round where my squad defended Silo 1 until the enemy shields went down.
I haven't had much chance to play with motion mines much (generally I die before they get a chance to activate, engineer isn't my top class yet :p ), but sounds like a good tactic. Another side effect to consider is that a lot of people won't even drive in if they see a single mine. So they may hop out of their armor and run in, which gives you/your squad a better chance of killing them; also gives the chance of capturing their armor and using it on them

I'm ranked 63 in the world right now with motion mines. I tend to lay them at both entrances to Toll Station at Camp Gibralter, then get ready to move forward to Harbor and start laying them there once my team is fully spawned and dug in.
Oh, and I smoke loads of weed, which gives me patience.

yeah but how does that give you alot of kills? there are only two vehicles on this map when you're defending so I dont see how you rack up the kills?I'm ranked 63 in the world right now with motion mines. motion mines are alot harder to use now because of the bait, I dont think you can just fire and forget em now;if someone gets out of a vehicle to try and clear them you need to be reay to popem with your smg - I tell you that gun is lethal with the expanded clip!!!I took down three blokes with one clip yesterday - extreme cqb!!:yay:an overall rank of 413 aint nothing to be sniffed at either :)

35-40 rounds in a clip = mini voss, I think I love engi class now with all the unlocks than before. + unless the FAV hits something going around the corner on Gibraltar the MM won't always hit, they get stuck. Thats where the EMP mines comes in handy.Comment

My tip, which I just racked up a ton of kills with last night. If a silo is being left unguarded, leave a motion mine or two behind any vehicles that aren't being used. This way they are still useful to your team but if anyone manages to sneak around and capture it they will inevitably be silly enough to try taking a vehicle with them. BANG!
Particularly good on hotly contested silos late in a round. Throw one or two down behind an APC at wherever it spawns for pretty much guaranteed multi-kills. We all know how much enemies love to try and get every APC or tank late on in the round. Make that greed work against them!

sounds like a v.good tactic Ill try this out;throwing down the orbs of death in a big pile is just a waste of time now -players are so aware of them and they'll just get baited...My tip, which I just racked up a ton of kills with last night. -i like to defend points with one or two mines around and then i perch up somewhere to keep an eye out for vehicles coming in. If someone sets them off, they get damaged and then i follow up with a shot from my anti vehicle weapon. Alternately, I hide behind something and let my vehicle radar provide the early warning.
-Back in the bf2 days where jets were rife, I like to stay on the ground to avoid standing out in hud on enemy jets. These days, I still stay on the ground and when defending, I stay away from the vehicles because of the way they stick out like a sore thumb for any enemy coming in. However, unoccupied vehicles poses a threat if stolen, so I also like to booby trap them by leaving mines behind them at their spawns.
-If I'm feeling reckless/suicidal, I charge up to vehicles that aren't looking at me and throw mines around them. You will be surprised how many walker pilots get spooked and bail when they see little black balls perk up and move in for the kill. As a bonus, you can steal vehicles off them and shoot them up.
-A friend of mine suggested in titan games you can drop motion mines on the force field where transport/gunship spawns and flies out from. Gets kills out of it if they aren't paying attention.
Much of my success as an engineer comes from putting mines in places that will cause the most harm to the enemy and ambushing enemy vehicles by being in a good spot and seeing them first before they see me.Comment

I've only just recently started playing a lot of Titan mode and with it Engingeer. I have found that a pretty good way to do motion mines at a silo is to throw one out in the open on the path towards the silo, and then 3 right back next to the silo itself out of view. I love watching someone come by, see the one mine by itself, take the damage, get out and repair their vehicle, and then drive right up to the silo thinking its now safe to cap and then WHAM - 3 motion mines just fly out and obliterate them. Meanwhile I am camped somewhere else with my pilum taking out all the armor that is at a standstill because its afraid of more mines.
With mines in general and defending silos my feeling is use more rather then less, because if its one of the hotly contested silos/choke points as long as your commander isnt a total moron he will drop some supply crates and you can re-stock mines pretty easily.Comment

I've found this to be more successful than merely suicidal, especially with walkers that have only a single driver, and especially when the walker is trying to capture something-- it's most vulnerable because of its focus on the silo/CP. You gotta read that Walker-driver's behavior. Walker drivers get frustrated by people who can hide on the other side of a silo, so they stagger around a bit, but they're looking for a counter-capture effort at that point. Chances are they're not looking for you to run out of cover from elsewhere, mine the whole area, and pin them in place while you're in their blind-area around the walker's feet.-If I'm feeling reckless/suicidal, I charge up to vehicles that aren't looking at me and throw mines around them. You will be surprised how many walker pilots get spooked and bail when they see little black balls perk up and move in for the kill. As a bonus, you can steal vehicles off them and shoot them up.
In the last couple of days I've killed 3 walkers this way, and a 4th was trying to take a silo single-handed, killed two of my teammates, and didn't know which of them was laying mines (neither, actually) but decided to repair the walker and tough them out. I had the Pilum all ready for a vent-kill, but instead I knifed him while pitying him; I hate being knifed while repairing, so I always look around when I jump out like that.
By the way, if you're the guy in the walker, and you get caught, the best move is to stay in the walker. You're probably dead, yeah, but you'll take the walker with you, instead of jumping out and leaving the enemy a perfectly tame walker, and hey, maybe the idiot out there will blow himself up; you never know!
Too bad you can't short-pod out of a walker; I think that would be a superb evac system.
This is good advice; I find that an engy armed with a Pilum is better when well-hidden and well-away from the CP-- do the capping and then get out, possibly out of scanning range. Let the mines guide the vehicles to where you can shoot them, and let the enemy infantry hole up in the silo/CP area before grenading them. Then, as necessary, re-cap the silo and find new cover and resupply. Don't forget that the dead can see you for a short while.I've only just recently started playing a lot of Titan mode and with it Engingeer. It's not always possible to set this up, but it's worth a ticket or two if you can get it right.Comment

i find that putting one down in plain sight, and two more behind a fence or something is a great trick...
And starting out as engy on Gibraltar is a great trick too... As well as getting up to six kills for taking out the two cars, you stop your team losing back bases straight away...Comment

I love motion mines, so handy to hold silos with.
I like to look at the mini map and see what other silos are capped so I know which direction enemy vehicels are likely to come from, then select the choke point they will come through. I place the mines behind an obstacle so they can't be seen and also don't activate early and pop up in front of the enemy vehicle. By the time they do lock on and pop up the vehicle is past them and can't see them, most often they think it is an AT lock and keep speeding forward, whereupon the mines take em out.
I plant 3 at a time becuase this will always kill a vehicle and unused, say 2 on a FAV, the rest remain behind.
The other way to defend the silos is to place 1,2 mines at the entry choke point and then move out past this point in a tank. Bait enemy tanks by shooting at them and then pull back passed your mines. As they follow you in to finish you and cap the silo you engage with the main gun and distracted by this they often get taken out by the mines. When in a tank I always to try to engage enemy armour with some sort of an edge, and motion mines layed in ambush help with that firepower edge.

I always guide people to my hidden motion mines with the EMP mines. I'll lay out the EMP mines in a way that will make you avoid them, because I leave a safe looking gap on the side of the road that you think is safe to pass. It gets them almost all the time.
My K/D is 3.33 with motion mines.Comment

good tactics mate but I dont pack emps (Ill take the scanner) I like to try and remain hidden in a good spot until the best moment. The vehicle scanner is much more powerful than the support infantry scanner because it gives the exact spot of the vehicle and its orientation;besides which two loads of mines to lay down can take too much time sometimesI always guide people to my hidden motion mines with the EMP mines.
