Giving a class only one function, anti-infantry, with no other way to score points and no defense against vehicles, sucks. If I was a bettin' man, I'd wager that Assault was the least-played class of BF2. Either that or Anti-Tank, but it's got to be pretty close.
Probably assault, but do you really want people with grenade launchers the ability to give themselves ammo and spam the GL more?
The other option, that they've already tried in the past, was to give him the ability to heal himself. We all know how that worked out.
40mm grenades take long enough to restock that you could just shoot him while he's getting more. Smoke and shotgun rounds restock more quickly, but most people don't cry about those.
I've actually been called a 40mm whore while using smoke, though. I thought it was pretty funny that the guy got mad over being killed by a slow-moving, slow-reloading, massive-drop weapon.
In any case, one person can't really "spam" 40mm grenades when they take over 10 seconds of standing around just to get another one.
Doesn't really matter that much to me. If BFBC2 is an example of how Dice prefers to have weapons unlocked, class selection will define which weapons you use in that role whether it be 4 classes or 7. I mean to unlock the better class weapons in BFBC2 you had to play as that class. In BF2 your unlocks were based on rank and you chose which one to get but it was still class specific. For me the change that had the most impact between BF2 and BFBC2 was the all kit option as it allowed you to play the class with a bit more selection. Most of the weapons in the all kits were balanced well enough to make them viable in combat. Also, linking body armor, mag rounds, etc. as selectable items that weren't class specific was a good change as it put the choice to players on whether they wanted to move faster, have deadlier ammo, be armored to take more damage instead of it being an unchangeable part of the kit.
I would have enjoyed playing assault more as a class in BF2 if i could have selected a loadout with a G-3, 3 to 4 smoke grenades, extra ammo clip, and a grappling hook. Or if i gave up smoke nades for the gas grenade launcher instead.
Which reminds me it would be nice to see those special forces kit items make an appearance in BF3. Grappling hooks just make flanking fortified positions much more entertaining. Using Vodnik's and FAV's as step-ladders just gets old.
To summarize number of classes isn't so much an issue if we have some selectable/all kit options and that weapon loadouts make classes balanced in terms of their role.
"We're all very different people. We're not Watusi. We're not Spartans. We're Americans, with a capital 'A', huh? You know what that means? Do ya? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts! Here's proof: his nose is cold! But there's no animal that's more faithful, that's more loyal, more loveable than the mutt." -John Winger (Bill Murray) Stripes
yeh I got to say I would much rather have the class system than the CoD system
in BF it provides much needed structure to a team orientated game, as long as the kits are well thought out like in 2142 and a bit of flexibility is given then I don't think you can go wrong
Its definitely not a game breaking problem, and has toned down a lot since they released the game.
This.
And if you've got 4 people working together so that grenades can be spammed, **** it.
You want teamwork or not?!?! It's hard enough to get people to spot enemies or throw medkits. Getting 3 other people to all go Assault to throw ammo at your feet so you can shoot 40mm grenades once every 2.5 seconds (or whatever, I don't know how the game treats multiple ammo packs)? That's pretty impressive, and a testament to how this game can bring people together. Because normally I'm the one who has to go Assault, as no one else ever drops any gorram ammo...
That's one person GL spamming and three others spawning on him or seeing him spam his GL and throwing ammo down in hopes of point whoring. Then going off and doing their own thing.

Try and replicate that situation without coordination without an external VoIP or pre-existing friends who've joined. Just try.

It really isn't hard.
You're glorifying point whoring as teamwork. You're voluntarily being blind to this. I'm not going to waste my time arguing with you while you act like this.
Back to unlocks, didn't MoH:T1 (I know how apparantly awful the game was, no need to remind me) have a system where each unlock was done in Tiers, and each unlock had a different one for each faction or something? or did I read wrong? If so, I reckon that could work for BF3... if done correctly.
The ONLY thing I liked about MoH was how there was set weapons per side. Although there was barely any difference between the weapons on either side...
