Ideally, the best solution would be no classes at all, your role would be defined by the load-out you chose to carry.
But classes serve as a way to balance the possible combinations a bit, so you cant be a self-healing, self-provide sniper with a HMG and Javelin as backup weapons.
I think BF2142 had a nice balance between fixed classes and customizability. You kept the ammo away from the explosive spammers, the LMG was a true support weapon fitting well within its class, the Engineer was a well rounded class that could always find something to do, and the recon/sniper class could do lots of non-camping stuff. And you could still personalize your class a great deal due to the various weapons and gadgets.

Actually that would be a better idea. Though The Recon kit shouldnt be a sniper by complete default, maybe provide a few Spec-ops like weapons for it, and the gillie suit would be an unlock.
I can imagine some weird situations with completely customisable kits like you think you spot an anti-tank guy but it's a medic/sniper with only one RPG in his back for ex. so you can't target priority targets when you're in a tank etc.
Also I think Dice like how things are with separate classes for the clarity of teamwork and balance purpose. When you see an assault you know he has ammo, when you see an enemy medic in a squad you know you should shot him first before he ressurect anyone, when you see a sniper running to your tank you know he has C4 etc. And if a fully customizable class system has too much limitations then there's no point at all.
If you want to do away with kits and be able to customize yourself however you want, why not just go play CoD? Having Kits is one the the defining elements of the BF series to me.
Personally, I haven't had much of a problem with the BC2 kits as they are laid out, but I did prefer the BF2142 ones the most (admittedly, assault did have a bit more firepower than everyone else, but it's not like the other kits were underpowered or useless). 4 kits seems about right to me, it's just a matter of deciding what items go in which kit best.
I dont agree. The different roles are important to BF, but classes are just one way of implementing that.
Does it really matter as long as you can play Engineer, sniper, Medic etc.?
I agree, the 7 kits for me are what defined battlefield. I much preferred how they did it in BF2142 whereby you could mix up the classes to some degree but what i dont want is the ability to completely customize yourself.
I definitely think support needs to be added back though. Medics should not have LMG's and assault should only have one function - assaulting.
Giving a class only one function, anti-infantry, with no other way to score points and no defense against vehicles, sucks. If I was a bettin' man, I'd wager that Assault was the least-played class of BF2. Either that or Anti-Tank, but it's got to be pretty close.
Assault was the lesser medic class and anti-tank an ungrateful class (I know it's my most played class on BF2, the guy just bailed from the tank 90% of the time so ZERO point in return).
