Well its more the development of rifles imo. In the Napoleonic period and prior, it may seem suicidal now but forming in ranks was the only real way to kill your opponent with a mass volley of fire as the muskets were just so inaccurate and took a long time to reload.
The development of the light and heavy machine guns completely changed the dynamic of warfare where now a squad is based around the LMG, along with armoured vehicles obviously making cavalry redundant.
But I agree, unless they actually bother overhauling the engine and AI for once, sticking with mele combat is a better idea.
